BROCK LESNAR - The latest heavy hitter in the UFC

10-21-2007

Denver, CO

International Superstar Joins Stacked Heavyweight Division

Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) – International superstar Brock Lesnar has already achieved high grades for his transition from pro wrestling to mixed martial arts. Now the former NCAA Champion and four-time All-American is ready for the next step in his career - taking on the best heavyweights in the world in the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization.

UFC President Dana White announced the signing of Lesnar to a promotional contract during the pay-per-view broadcast of UFC 77 at the US Bank Arena.

“I don’t think there are any other pro wrestlers that can make the transition to MMA, except for Brock Lesnar,” said White. “And if you look at his amateur wrestling credentials, his size, and what he’s done, this guy can end up being a force in the heavyweight division of the UFC.”

“If you want to go with the NFL of the fighting game, it’s the UFC, and it was an easy choice for me,” said Lesnar. “Obviously I don’t think I’m ready for a title shot right away, but I will be there, and I’m not gonna turn down any opponent because I’m here to prove myself. I’m not here to pick and choose my fights. I’ll fight whomever they want. I don’t make the fights; that’s not my job. I’ve got one job to do and that’s to fight.”

The date and opponent for Lesnar’s UFC debut will be revealed in the near future.

A native of Webster, South Dakota who now makes his home in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, the 6 foot 3 ½ , 265 pound Lesnar first made a name for himself as a wrestler at Webster High School, compiling a 33-0 record in his senior year. This success eventually led him to Bismarck State College and the University of Minnesota, where he was a four-time All American, two-time Big Ten Champion, a second place finisher in the 1999 NCAA Championships, and the 2000 NCAA National Champion.

After finishing his college career with an astounding 106-5 record, Lesnar became a household name as a professional wrestler, and even had a short stint in the NFL® with the Minnesota Vikings.

In 2007 though, Lesnar was in need of a new challenge in his life, and he turned to mixed martial arts, where world-class wrestlers like himself have had enormous success throughout the sport’s history. On June 2, 2007, Lesnar made his long-awaited MMA debut and took only 69 seconds to destroy Min Soo Kim with strikes that led to a submission.

Lesnar’s signing to the UFC bolsters a talent-rich heavyweight division that includes former PRIDE heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira, Cheick Kongo, former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, Brandon Vera, Gabriel Gonzaga, Mirko Cro Cop, Fabricio Werdum and Heath Herring.

IFL - Athletes Come From Far and Wide for IFL Draft 2008 in New York
10-21-2007

Denver, CO, PNW

MAMARONECK, N.Y., October 20, 2007 -- Nearly 150 mixed martial athletes residing in 20 U.S. states – hailing from at least 10 other countries – came to the L.A. Boxing gym in Mamaroneck, N.Y. today, looking for spots on International Fight League teams at the IFL 2008 Draft.

It’s likely that none of those had a more rewarding trip to the New York suburb than Levon Maynard, a civilian Air Force computer technician who drove all night from Norfolk, Va., sleeping in his car before standing out among the more than 30 welterweights with an impressive showing in all phases that earned him a spot among the pool of 18 athletes selected by the coaches.

“I would have done anything for this opportunity,” said Maynard, who was joined by his girlfriend on the eight-hour one-way excursion. “Getting to see where my skills are against a lot of other guys in my weight class with my own level of skill and experience was the best part.”

Under the watchful eye of IFL Commissioner Kurt Otto, “IFL Battleground” host Bas Rutten and Toronto Dragons coach Carlos Newton, each athlete participated in a preliminary session which included takedowns, jiu-jitsu and sparring/kick boxing, contested on mats.

About 50 moved on to the final round of MMA sparring in the ring. Current IFL athletes Deividas Taurosevicius of the Pitbulls and Shane Ott of the Scorpions served as referees.

The 18 athletes selected join a pool of potential IFL competitors. They may serve as full team members, alternates, training partners, or potential replacement or Superfight performers as well.

While a quick look at the parking lot outside L.A. Boxing revealed license plates from states as far away as Ohio, Maryland and even Indiana, the crowd of supporters inside the facility was decidedly in the corner of several local athletes, notably Dennis Racanello, 35, of Larchmont, N.Y., and Dyrell Walker, 26, of New Rochelle, N.Y. Racanello, a faculty member at nearby Iona College, trains at the Mamaroneck L.A. Boxing gym, and his early success in drills and jiu-jitsu produced the loudest cheers. Walker, a Western Connecticut State University grad who was born in Jamaica but grew up in New Rochelle, went one step further, showing quick moves in the drills and strong sparring skills to impress the coaches.

“There was a great energy in the building today,” said Otto. “There were some very spirited sparring sessions and I think guys really fed off the energy.”

Another pairing of note was the light heavyweight finals matchup between Armin Mrkanovic, a native of Bosnia who made the Chicago Red Bears roster at the beginning of 2007 but was injured before he could compete for Coach Igor Zinoviev’s squad, and Constantinos Phillipou, another area product who brought an extended contingent of training partners and friends to support him. Mrkanovic and Phillipou battled it out in an entertaining sparring session which ultimately resulted in both athletes being selected for the pool.

Heavyweights Lenard Terrence of Akwesasne, N.Y. and A.J. Xhudo of Yonkers, N.Y. gave their all in their matchup as well, earning loud applause and spots in the both the qualifier pool and the hearts of the coaches.

“The light heavies and heavies really showed us something today,” said Newton. “I look for heart. I want to see how they react when they’re hit. These guys were ready to go to battle to win us over, and they did.”

The last of three IFL 2008 Draft sessions is set for next Saturday, October 27, in Schaumburg, Illinois. Last week, more than 250 athletes competed at the session in Costa Mesa, Calif., at which 27 were selected for the athlete pool.

Here are the qualifiers as selected by the coaches in Mamaroneck:

Process To Begin With “EliteXC Presents Cage Rage 24’’ - Streaming Live Dec. 1 on ProElite.com

LOS ANGELES – All fighters competing on upcoming Cage Rage fight cards will be subject to random drug testing, it was announced Wednesday.

Cage Rage, which recently was purchased by Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc. (PELE.PK), is the biggest and most prestigious Mixed Martial Arts organization in the UK.

Gary Shaw, President of ProElite’s Live Events Division, EliteXC, initiated the idea to test the fighters

“Anybody that knows me knows that my No. 1 priority is the health and safety of the athletes,’’ Shaw said. “I wholeheartedly agree and support Cage Rage’s decision. NO HOLDS BARRED: Mo Lawal, Wrestling and the Combat Sports

10-18-2007

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2007-10-17T22_57_09-07_00

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman speaks with freestyle wrestler Mo Lawal (http://www.myspace.com/molawal), a member of the US national team.

Mo Lawal is an athlete who embodies the totality of the combat sports. He resides and trains at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, and is a 2008 Olympic hopeful. He is also an avid boxing fan, has trained in boxing, and is friends with numerous boxers. After his wrestling career is over, he plans to become a professional mixed martial arts fighter.

He will also be wrestling at the prestigious Alexander Medved International (http://themat.com/index.php?page=showarticle&ArticleID=17261) in Minsk, Belarus, Oct. 19-21, at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

In a lengthy discussion, we talked about his training regimen at the Olympic Training Center; the recent 2007 world wrestling championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, which he attended; some of the burning controversies in international wrestling; his prospects for making the Olympic team in 2008; the Medved tournament; major boxing cards coming up; ties between wrestlers and boxers at the Olympic Training Center; what his specific plans are for entering mixed martial arts; and more.

Also, make sure to check out my weekly boxing show, SecondsOut Radio. On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, at http://www.secondsout.com/radio/, we discuss Saturday's fight between WBO heavyweight champ Sultan Ibragimov (22-0-1, 17 KOs) and former heavyweight champion, 44-year-old Evander Holyfield (41-9-2, 27 KOs), held at the Khodynka Arena in Moscow, Russia. Ibragimov retained his title with a lopsided 12-round decision, winning by scores of 118-110 and 117-111 twice. We open with the unedited and complete audio from Evander Holyfield's postfight media teleconference call held with American boxing journalists shortly after the fight. Included on this call are some comments by promoter Kathy Duva. Right after that, we offer our own opinion on what happened Saturday night, and whether or not Evander Holyfield should retire as a professional fighter.

NO HOLDS BARRED: A Tale of Two 44-Year-Old Heavyweights
10-16-2007

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2007-10-15T02_58_50-07_00

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the recent controversies involving two 44-year-old heavyweight fighters and former world champions: boxer Evander Holyfield and mixed martial arts fighter Randy Couture.

Holyfield just dropped a lopsided unanimous decision to WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov in Moscow, Russia, this past Saturday, October 13. Many are now calling for the obvious, for Holyfield, who turns 45 this coming Friday, to retire. But many in the American boxing media were just this past week telling us that Holyfield actually stood a real chance to win in this fight.

Couture announced last week that he was quitting the UFC and vacating his heavyweight title there. His main beefs were that top heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko had just signed with another promotion, M-1 of Russia, and that he was not being compensated fairly and had been told he was the second-highest paid fighter in that company when he had heard directly from other fighters that he was not.

In another no-holds-barred commentary, we discuss what all this says about the sycophantic media which covers both sports, the future of boxing and its beleaguered heavyweight division, and the future of UFC now that it has abruptly lost perhaps its most popular fighter of all time.

(Note: This edition of NO HOLDS BARRED includes some explicit language.)

CFC Offers $3 Million Purse for Randy Couture VS Fedor Emelianenko

10-16-2007

Denver, CO

DAVIE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Cage Fighting Championships (CFC) Spokesperson Crawford Grimsley announced today, “The CFC will put up a $3,000,000 purse to bring the Couture vs Emelianenko fight to Pay-Per-View. $1,000,000 will be guaranteed to each fighter while the winner takes home an additional cool million, making this the largest single purse for any one MMA fight.”

Grimsley, a former heavyweight boxer who went 12 rounds with big George Foreman for the world title in 1996 said, “I don’t know who set up the current MMA system of sanctioning bodies locking fighters into exclusive long term contracts. I do know who is out to change this system though, we are, the CFC. We are not going to try to reinvent the wheel, but we would like to add a little of the business model that professional boxing has adopted for decades. Can you imagine if professional boxing would not allow champion to fight champion. How many great boxing matches would we have missed?”

Grimsley added, “The UFC has made this sport into what it is today and my hat is off to them, but in the same regard, we feel the sport must allow the best from any league to fight each other when the time is right. We are willing to sit down with any and all parties necessary to make this fight happen including the UFC, Randy Couture, the Gersh Agency, Fedor Emelianenko, his manager Vadim Finkelstein and M-1. It happens everyday in boxing. That’s how you get an undisputed champion. This exclusivity only hurts the sport, the fans, the fighters and the amount of money a fighter can make. We are going to do everything we can to bring this fight and many others currently prohibited. It’s time for the MMA to change for the benefit of the fighters and fans, not the sanctioning bodies.”

The first CFC event took place October 6, 2007 and has already hit the radar of Mark Cuban’s HDNet Network, which only broadcasts in 1080i High Definition, and the hit show Inside MMA. Highlights of the first CFC Middleweight Title fight “Let the Rage Begin” aired this last Friday, October 12, 2007. For airing information, go to www.hd.net and look for the Inside MMA schedule.

ELITEXC SIGNS NICK DIAZ TO LONG-TERM EXTENSION

10-12-2007

Denver, CO

MMA Superstar Backed By ProElite Family

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 12, 2007) – Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc., which celebrated its first birthday recently, received a belated present from Nick Diaz when the exciting, popular fan favorite and Mixed Martial Arts superstar signed an exclusive, long-term contract extension with the company’s Live Event’s Division, EliteXC.

Terms and length of the deal were not disclosed.

“Nick is a tremendously talented young fighter and we are extremely thrilled to have him join our family,” said EliteXC Live Events President, Gary Shaw, who made the announcement Thursday. “He is a very humble young man and dedicated athlete with an enormous wealth of talent.’’

Diaz (nickdiaz.proelite.com), who is 15-6, will make his next start for EliteXC when he collides with hard-hitting KJ Noons (kjnoons.proelite.com), who is 5-2, for the EliteXC world title in a brand new weight division – 160-pounds – in the main event of “Renegade” on Saturday, Nov. 10, in Corpus Christi, Texas, on SHOWTIME.

Adds Shaw: “This contract extension, while continuing to validate that EliteXC is a major player in the MMA market, also means that Nick will be surrounded by a loving fight family and have a home for good. Nick is going to be a major star and is quickly becoming a household name not only in MMA but in the world of sports.’’

Diaz, 24, of Stockton, Calif., is already one of the most recognizable and popular figures in MMA. A Brazilian black belt who is a member of Team Gracie, the confident southpaw has fought some of the sport's biggest names in his illustrious six-year career.

In a career-best performance in which he rallied from the brink of defeat, a battered, bruised and bloodied Diaz scored an impressive, legendary gogoplata submission victory over then-consensus No. 1 lightweight contender, Takanori Gomi (takanorigomi.proelite.com), in a 2007 Fight of the Year candidate that wound up going into the books as a no contest.

Diaz made his EliteXC debut on Sept. 15, 2007, in Hawaii, and registered a hard-fought three-round split decision over determined local favorite, Mike Aina, in an exhausting, bloody, give-and-take battle. A fierce competitor, Diaz survived an early knockdown and a cut right eye to outpoint the local favorite by the scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29.

“This is really awesome,’’ said Diaz, referring to the long-term signing extension. “Everybody knows that I am just a fighter who is looking for some respect and an organization that will let me be me. Gary Shaw and EliteXC really stepped up and I am so grateful and happy for it. The ProElite family is growing every day and I am really excited to be part of it.

“Everybody has made my job easier for me. Now I can focus on training to be the best I can be in and out of the cage.’’

UFC Champ Randy Couture Retires

10-12-2007

Denver, CO

Randy c.jpg (32285 bytes)

Randy Couture issued the following statement from South Africa where he is shooting scenes for his lead role in the upcoming feature film “The Scorpion King – Rise of the Akkadian.

“I appreciate this opportunity the sport of MMA and the UFC has given me. “However, I’m tired of swimming upstream at this stage with the management of the UFC. It only makes sense at this point in my career to fight Fedor Emelianenko, and since he’s now signed with another organization, I feel like it’s time to resign and focus on my other endeavors.”

“I’m tired of being taken advantage of, played as the nice guy and basically swimming against the current with the management of the UFC. I have a lot of other things going on in my life that I’m doing just fine with. I don’t need the problems. I don’t feel like I get the respect I deserve from the organization, and that’s motivation No. 2 for the letter of resignation that was sent today.”

“I think the final straw for me was meeting with Dana and Lorenzo (Fertitta, UFC co-owner) where they claimed I was the No. 2 paid athlete in the organization, which I know is a bold-faced lie,” Couture said. Polling other athletes, said Couture, he learned that his compensation — some $250,000 a fight with pay-per-view bonuses, according to the Couture camp — was nowhere near what other top UFC fighters were making.

“All us athletes are all pretty tightly intertwined,” he said. “You hear what other guys were paid signing bonuses and what other guys were paid on the record and off the record with bonuses. I’ve heard Chuck’s numbers. Tito’s numbers. Hughes’ numbers. Quinton’s numbers. Cro Cop, Wanderlei. I heard what they were offering Fedor, and it’s insulting.”

STATEMENT FROM DANA WHITE, UFC PRESIDENT, REGARDING COUTURE

“I’m not surprised at all by Randy’s decision. I talked to Randy several weeks ago and he said that if he couldn’t fight Fedor, then he has nothing left to prove in the sport of mixed martial arts.

He has been doing a lot of acting, and I know he is in South Africa right now filming a movie. I think it’s a great move for Randy’s acting career to retire from fighting while he is on top.

As we all know, Randy retired before. The landscape in MMA changes every day. So when he is ready to come out of retirement again, he is still under contract with me, and I’m ready to promote him.”

LEGENDARY STREET FIGHTER KIMBO SIGNS LONG-TERM CONTRACT WITH ELITEXC
10-12-2007

Denver, CO

Internet Superstar Makes Television Debut On Nov. 10 ‘Renegade’.........MMA Fight Card Airs Live On SHOWTIME

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 12, 2007) – The notorious King of Street Fighting and one of the meanest, roughest, toughest, baddest brawlers in the history of YouTube, Kimbo Slice, has signed a multi-year contract with Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s Live Fight Division, EliteXC.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Kimbo is a street fighting and Internet legend who has in excess of five million downloads on YouTube,” said EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw, who made the announcement Thursday. “He is a brutal fighter who has a take-no prisoners approach.

“We have had our eye on Kimbo from day one and have been actively pursing him since. We struck when the time was right, and now we have our man.

“For those who have never seen him, they are going to witness perhaps the most vicious of all fighters. It is going to be very exciting for Mixed Martial Arts fans who have been anxiously waiting for him to step into the cage on SHOWTIME to see how Kimbo does as he continues to cross over into MMA.

“I can’t express how happy we all are to have Kimbo become a part of our ProElite/EliteXC family.’’

A sign of the times, perhaps, the incredibly popular Kimbo could be the first superstar athlete to get his start in any professional sport after making a name for himself via the Internet. Now, finally, he is going from the small screen of a computer to the big screen of television.

The major question, of course, is can his well-documented prowess on the pavement translate into success in MMA.

One thing is certain: Kimbo (kimboslice.proelite.com) brings the same fervor and edge-of-your-seat anticipation into a cage as a young Mike Tyson brought to the ring in professional boxing.

“Fans could never blink during a Tyson fight and the same goes with Kimbo,’’ said Shaw, adding that Kimbo will make his EliteXC and SHOWTIME debut on the Nov. 10 “Renegade” cage fight card extravaganza at Corpus Christi, Texas. His opponent will be announced shortly.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 33-year-old, 250-pound Kimbo has been honing his MMA skills in recent months under the tutelage of legendary fighter and trainer, Bas Rutten.

“I’m excited about this great opportunity,” the soft-spoken Kimbo said. “I’ve been waiting to fight and this is my chance. I’ll be ready for whoever they put me in with on Nov. 10.

“Gary Shaw and the entire ProElite and EliteXC teams have been great to me from the start. I could tell immediately that I could trust them and they were my friends. These are the kinds of people that I want in my circle. I really appreciate what J.D. Penn and Jeremy Lappen have done to make this all happen.’’

Raw, powerful, dangerously explosive, extremely heavy-handed and always one punch away from ending a fight, Kimbo won his lone MMA outing with a 1:12, first-round victory over former world boxing heavyweight champion “Merciless’’ Ray Mercer in June 2007. Ironically, he submitted Mercer via a guillotine choke.

NO HOLDS BARRED: Passing on UFC A Wise Move by HBO

10-10-2007

Denver, CO

On this edition of NO HOLDS BARRED, host Eddie Goldman discusses the decision by HBO not to televise UFC shows.

When we interviewed Ross Greenburg (http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/eg/2007-09-24T00_09_22-07_00), the president of HBO Sports, at the
September 19 Mayweather-Hatton news conference in New York, he said that talks between HBO and UFC were ongoing. Last week, however, he issued a statement (http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6487759.html) saying that the deal was now off.

This week we explain in depth why it was a wise move by HBO to end negotiations about airing the trashy UFC product, and how their business models are in conflict. We also offer a critique of the elitist nature of HBO's programming in general, including its boxing series.
