"HUMAN WEAPON" - HISTORY CHANNEL announces new martial arts program
3-29-2007

Denver, CO

The History Channel announced a new weekly martial arts series called Human Weapon. The show is currently in production and will premier sometime in 2007 - 2008.

Each of the martial arts -- whether Karate, Capoeira, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, or Greco-Roman wrestling -- is the unique product of a fascinating culture. Each is steeped in the history and mythology of a region. And each has a Master. Every week on Human Weapon, our hosts, Jason Chambers, a mixed martial artist and professional fighter, and Bill Duff, a former football player and wrestler, go on a quest to find the master of a different martial art. They venture to extreme and exotic places -- one week, seedy back streets of Bangkok to find Master Muay Thai fighter Suriya Ploenchit, and the next, sampling local delicacies such as steamed silkworms and snake blood en route to face off with the reigning Taekwondo champion in South Korea. Along the way they absorb a nation's unique history and traditions, and how it gave birth to its distinct form of combat. In a series of extreme tests, they must confront professionals in each fighting style and fight a master. Marc Etkind is The History Channel Executive Producer. (13 episodes).

TITO ORTIZ - Explains why he pulled out of Dana White Grudge boxing match.
3-28-2007

Denver, CO

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTER TITO ORTIZ SAYS HE PULLED OUT OF A GRUDGE BOXING MATCH WITH UFC PRESIDENT DANA WHITE BECAUSE HE WAS BEING ASKED TO FIGHT WITHOUT A CONTRACT

Top mixed martial arts fighter Tito Ortiz says he pulled out of a planned boxing bout against Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president Dana White because he was being asked to enter the risky match without a contract and for no money. He said he is still willing to box White, but only if financial terms are ironed out in advance.

Ortiz, who has held the UFC light heavyweight championship title, had been scheduled to fight former amateur boxing champion White on March 24th in a “grudge match” in Las Vegas. The match was a pre-condition that Ortiz had imposed before he signed a new contract with the UFC last year. Like Ortiz, White had been training for the fight and had received Nevada State Athletic commission approval for the match.

Ortiz explained in a post on his MySpace.com blog that he had already given up time and lost promotional fees to train for the fight against White, but decided against continuing after White and Spike TV declined to sign a contract agreeing to monetary and other terms, such as filming the fight for broadcast on pay per view television.

After canceling several paid personal appearances in order to train for the fight and undergoing routine medical tests, he received a call from Craig (Piligian, Spike TV’s Senior Vice President of Sports and Specials), who said that “Dana (White) says that they are not going to shoot the fight (for PPV) or cover it in anyway. So this was a real lose, lose situation for me. I lost out on money for appearances. Now I was losing out on promotion and big dollars for the PPV. He didn't want to cut me in on the deal. So as a business man I couldn't do the fight.”

Ortiz also said the he has a “very big fight with (Rashad) Evans” coming up on July 7th. “Why would I risk my health and that fight for free?” he asked, referring to the White boxing match. “I wasn't going to make anything for it. I was not going to get taken advantage of as a fighter or a businessman. You tell me if I made the right decision. Hopefully this will get ironed out and will be done right the next time. Just trying to do business.”

NEW ERA - Gives fighters a piece of the pie!

3-21-2007

Denver, CO

New Era Fighting (NEF) president/CEO Ron Kort has announced that his hot, new MMA organization is offering an unprecedented even split of the gate, after expenses, to all of its participating fighters at future shows.

NEF also is offering the highest purse in the history of Mixed Martial Arts competition -- $1,000,000 - to the winner of its revolutionizing "World's Toughest Man" (WTC) contest winner if in a winner-take-all fight he defeats legendary combat fighter Kimo Leopoldo, who recently issued a challenge to UFC president Dana White because of derogatory remarks White made about Kimo and NEF.

"UFC is generating roughly $3,000,000 at the door and roughly $20,000,000 a show," Kort explained the reasoning for his revolutionary offer to fighters. "I believe UFC made $222 million in 2006. NEF is willing to take 50-percent of the door and split the rest between fighters for any of our events, in addition to giving the fighters their regular purse. That way they will have a bigger stake in their fights and, in a way, will be 'part owners' of NEF.

"So, fighters entering our WTC contest may also be offered a promotional contract, whether they win or lose and that, in turn, means the WTC also represents a scouting mission for future NEF 'owners' in addition to a shot at $1,000,000. NEF has been built on the belief that it is for the fighters, by the fighters, and by the audience for the audience, not like other groups like the UFC that are political motivated and/or into promoting only favored fighters. NEF's goal is to balance a fight organization in favor of fighters and audience members equally."

NEF, featuring the raw violence of UFC and WWE-like entertainment outside of the ring, plans a series of international level tryouts, tentatively scheduled to begin June 15-17, at a venue in Orange Country, California. Each tryout in the proposed series will be conducted during a three-day tournament in an 8-10 month period. Selected fighters will advance to the next round, where they will fight each other in a tournament format to eventually determine the remaining 10 survivors.

The 10 tryout-survivors and some fighters already signed to NEF promotional contracts will compete on a show in either California or Las Vegas. The winner will be crowned "World's Toughest Man" and be offered an anticipated $1,000,000 winner-take-all fight against living legend Kimo, headlining a full card for a pay-per-view broadcast live from in Las Vegas at a date to be determined.

BATTLEQUEST 5 "AVALANCHE!!" -  Returns to Colorado

3-16-2007

Denver, CO

ROF promoter Sven Bean is happy to announce that he is bringing back the promotion BATTLEQUEST to the fight circuit. From August of 2003 to August of 2004, BATTLEQUEST ran four successful events. The promotion was originally created to provide athletes a venue to get ring experience, and work as a feeder show to the RING OF FIRE flagship. The shows featured top up and coming fighters from Colorado and surrounding states. The promotion also featured the debut of some very popular ROF fighters. ROF Bantam Weight Champion Joe Doherty , K-1 Heroes veteran Ali Abdelaziz, and lightweight Rocky Johnson all cut their teeth on BATTLEQUEST.

"With the success of Ring Of Fire, it made sense to bring back Battlequest. I have so many fighters that want to fight and I can't keep them all busy. I also need a place for me to build fighters and explore new talent. I brought in my partner from Vail, Carlos Carvahlo to run the series. We have done a few events together and he knows what to expect out of a ROF event. We plan on doing 2-3 events in Vail, and also return to Castle Rock with the series in the summer. I am excited to see what Carlos can do with the opportunity." said Bean

On Saturday March 31st, the promotion comes to the Dobson Arena in Vail, Colorado. BATTLEQUEST 5: AVALANCHE! will feature 10 MMA bouts, and 1 Muay Thai match. The full line up will be released next week, but the card is headlined by the first title match in BATTLEQUEST history. Elizabeth Colorado's Rocky Johnson will take on Omaha's Ben Henderson at 155 lbs. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketswest locations, online at www.ticketswest.com or by calling 866-464-2626.

USA Wrestling hosts historic Grappling Summit bringing together the sport in the United States
3-14-2007

Denver, CO

By Gary Abbott USA Wrestling

USA Wrestling hosted a Grappling Summit at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. on March 10, bringing together many leaders from wrestling and Grappling to discuss the future of the sport.

FILA, the international wrestling federation, recently recognized Grappling as a form of international wrestling. FILA has appointed a World Grappling Committee to oversee the development of the sport on the international level.

USA Wrestling, as the national governing body for wrestling in the United States and a member of FILA, hosted this Grappling Summit to organize its involvement in Grappling moving forward.

FILA will host the World Wrestling Games in Antalya, Turkey on Sept. 7-9. Grappling will be included in the competition, along with Beach Wrestling and Sombo. USA Wrestling invited a number of respected Grappling organizations and leaders to discuss the process for selecting and training a U.S. Grappling team to compete in the World Wrestling Games.

In addition to leaders and staff from USA Wrestling, the meeting featured representatives from the following organizations:
• International Submission Wrestling Association
• Grapplers Quest
• World Grappling Games
• North American Grappling Association
• No Limits
• FILA World Grappling Committee
• On The Mat.com
Other organizations were invited and have expressed an interest in participating in future organizational activities with USA Wrestling.

USA Wrestling President Jim Ravannack of Metaire, La. announced the creation of an ad-hoc committee within USA Wrestling for Grappling. Included on the Grappling ad-hoc committee are Ravannack, Art Martori of Phoenix, Ariz., John Bardis of Alpharetta, Ga., Stan Dziedzic of Roswell, Ga. and Bill Scherr of Glenview, Ill. The ad-hoc committee will make recommendations to USA Wrestling’s Board of Directors concerning the management and direction for the sport.

The leaders at the Summit, after prolonged discussion, decided to work together on a USA Wrestling Grappling World Team Trials to determine the U.S. team for the World Wrestling Games. A system of qualification for this event was also agreed upon. Final details on the World Team Trials and the qualifying series will be announced shortly. Many other topics were discussed, with an agreement to work together to build the sport in the future.

“This was an exciting and meaningful meeting,” said Ravannack. “Getting people together to discuss an emerging wrestling style and deciding to work together is very rewarding. The Grappling community is looking for a new avenue working with USA Wrestling. This is also an area where USA Wrestling can grow.”

A Grappling Sub-Committee is also being formed, to work on sport-specific issues within Grappling, including officiating, coaching, promotion, marketing and rules, to bring proposals to USA Wrestling’s ad-hoc committee.

“I am very excited we were able to get together in the same room and work towards the process of building Grappling under a legitimate national governing body like USA Wrestling,” said Jason Townsend of the International Submission Wrestling Association. “Without USA Wrestling and FILA, it would take another 20 years to get this sport where we are going. I am excited to be a part of this.”

“The last 11 years, we have watched Grappling grow into an amazing competitor and spectator sport. Now, working together with USA Wrestling, we can final take a big step to take the sport to the next level,” said Brian Cimins of Grapplers Quest.

“We are really excited to see the Grappling community come together and give the athletes an opportunity for world recognition and work toward a common goal of joining the Olympic family,” said Ryan Gregg of the World Grappling Games.

“By uniting wrestling and the submission disciplines to compete and display their skills in events sanctioned by USA Wrestling is a huge step for this sport,” said Jim Santaniello of No Limits.

USA Wrestling will make additional announcements concerning its programs within Grappling in the upcoming weeks.
