BANG - Ready to rock at Ring of Fire

2-10-2006

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

Duane BANG! Ludwig is on top of the world! He is coming off his KO victory of Canadian Jonathon Goulet at ULTIMATE FIGHT NIGHT 3. It took just 11 seconds (4 seconds in real time) to shake off the ring rust, and put away one of the top up and coming fighters in the circuit. It was a perfectly executed punch, timed just right, and if you blinked you might of missed it! He came out of the fight clean and is basically injury free. Ludwig is now slated to face up and coming Japanese fighter Toshikazu Harada on Saturday night's RING OF FIRE 21: FULL BLAST card. His training has been going great, as many of his gym mates are getting ready for spots on the same show. This will also be his first time back in front of his hometown Denver crowd since ROF 16. That night BANG suffered a KO loss to Minnesota fighter Sam Morgan. Morgan then used that victory to jump on board the UFC train, while Ludwig went back to K-1.

Ludwig doesn't know much about his opponent Harada. The Japanese fighter has a reputation with some of the Japanese press as having a "Genki Sudo" style. Young. Hungry. Unorthodox. A combination that should pose a threat to BANG! None of this matters to Ludwig. He is focusing on making things right for his home town fans. "I had a real bad showing my last time at Ring of Fire. I didn't fight my fight that night. I wanted to grapple. That's not my strength, I let my guard down, wanting him to shoot. Sam caught me and I went down. That won't happen again. The way I see it, I owe my Denver fans a great fight. A fight where I fight the way I want to. I am taking all the frustration from that fight and adding it my win at UFC and I am coming out gunning. I don't care what he does, it is about what I want to do, and that is knock him out. I owe that to my fans and I intend to pay them back"

The Ludwig-Harada fight is the main event of a 11 bout fight card featuring fighters from all over the World. Teams will be coming from as far away as Japan and England. The under card will feature fighters from Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah

ZUFFA Earns Victory in Trademark Infringement Lawsuit
1-26-2006
From WWW.UFC.TV
By Thomas Gerbasi

It was just another week in the life of the UFC, as sometimes the fights don’t just take place inside the Octagon, but outside of it as well. A case in point was Zuffa’s recent trademark infringement lawsuit against the Worldwide Fighting Championship and Gino Carlucci, which was filed in Phoenix on January 10th.

“It’s an unfortunate situation when we have to wake up every day, come into work and sue people because they’re using our brand names and copying the look of our product and logos,” said UFC President Dana White. “It would be like me waking up and thinking ‘you know what? McDonalds looks like they make a lot of money. I think I’m gonna open up my own McDonalds and use their golden arches.’ You can’t do it. It should be common sense that you can’t use someone’s trademarks and all their intellectual property without their permission, but people try to get away with it and it’s unfortunate, because when they do, we inevitably have to go out and take care of it.”

The case centered on the Worldwide Fighting Championship’s usage of an Octagon in its events without a license from Zuffa, as well as using an Octagon design as part of its logo; using the term ‘Ultimate Fighting’ in advertisements; and using a ‘WFC’ logo that was confusingly similar to that of Zuffa’s UFC logo.

And contrary to what some press releases issued by the offending company would have you believe, the lawsuit had nothing to do with wiping out competing brands or the use of the phrase “Fighting Championship”; it’s about protecting the UFC’s intellectual properties and keeping newer fans of the sport from being confused by misleading advertising.

“They’re using ‘Ultimate Fighting’, and they’re using an Octagon with fencing over it,” said White. “And whether people like it or not, Zuffa owns the trademark to the Octagon, Zuffa owns the trademark to ‘Ultimate Fighting,’ and if you illegally use any of them, Zuffa will sue you. End of story.”

As for other news outlets’ erroneous reports on this matter, White pulled no punches.

“It's unbelievable to me that certain MMA websites who want to be taken seriously continue to deliver false news and rumors to fight fans on a regular basis,” he said. “One site, which claims to be ‘following this situation closely’ is still reporting on this without having read the actual complaint – which is a publicly available document. It’s sloppy reporting and it does a disservice to the hardcore fans that follow this sport.”

The case was resolved last week though, just before a preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for Wednesday, January 18th. The Federal District Court entered a Final Judgment and Permanent Injunction against the WFC and Gino Carlucci on January 25, 2006, in which the WFC defendants acknowledged the validity of Zuffa’s federal trademark rights, and were ordered to refrain from using the term ULTIMATE FIGHTING, to modify the WFC logo to remove the octagon component and to modify the font style and appearance of the “WFC”. As part of the Judgment, WFC was ordered to obtain a license from Zuffa and pay license fees in connection with WFC's use of the Octagon fighting enclosure at its WFC mixed martial arts events.

Said White after these recent events, “Zuffa spends a lot of time and money to create its intellectual property, and Zuffa is required by law to protect the rights it acquires. As a result, we will use all legal means necessary to prevent others from confusing fans into believing they are buying the UFC experience.

UFC® AFFIRMS “ULTIMATE FIGHTING®” AND OCTAGON TRADEMARK UFC® AFFIRMS “ULTIMATE FIGHTING®” AND OCTAGON TRADEMARK RIGHTS IN JUDGMENT AGAINST WORLDWIDE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP

Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship® brand, announced today that it secured a key legal victory in its trademark infringement lawsuit against the Worldwide Fighting Championship and Gino Carlucci. Zuffa filed the complaint in Phoenix on January 10, 2006 to protect its intellectual property rights. Zuffa’s principal allegations were that Worldwide Fighting Championship (1) was using an octagon fighting enclosure at its mixed martial arts events without a license from Zuffa and incorporating an octagonal design as part of its logo, (2) was impermissibly displaying the term “Ultimate Fighting” in advertisements on its website and (3) was using a “WFC” logo that was confusingly similar to Zuffa’s stylized UFC logo.

The case was resolved just before a preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for last week. The Federal District Court entered a Final Judgment and Permanent Injunction on January 25, 2006, in which the WFC defendants acknowledged the validity of Zuffa’s federal trademark rights, and were ordered, among other things, to refrain from using the term ULTIMATE FIGHTING, to modify the WFC logo to remove the octagon component and to modify the font style and appearance of the “WFC”. As part of the Judgment, WFC was also ordered to obtain a license from Zuffa and pay license fees in connection with WFC’s use of the Octagon™ fighting enclosure at its WFC mixed martial arts events.

UFC President Dana White states that “Zuffa spends a lot of time and money to create its intellectual property, and Zuffa is required by law to protect the rights it acquires. As a result, we will use all legal means to prevent others from confusing fans into believing they are buying the UFC experience.”

HDNET PRESENTS WORLD EXTREME CAGEFIGHTING LIVE JANUARY 13

1-11-2006

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

HDNet brings the exciting sport of mixed martial arts into television viewers’ homes with the live high definition telecast of World Extreme Cagefighting: “Unfinished Business,” premiering on HDNet Friday, January 13 at 9:30 p.m. ET.

At 9:00 p.m. ET, prior to the live event, HDNet will air a half-hour original program World Extreme Cagefighting: “Exposed,” where HDNet host Ron Kruck previews the matches and prepares viewers to enter the cage with this one-of-a-kind pre-fight show.

“World Extreme Cagefighting is the premier fighting sport for the 21st Century,” said Scott Adams, President of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC).  “Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, as it is commonly known, combines all the fighting disciplines into one event, pitting wrestlers against kick boxers, boxers against karate experts, etc.  In fact, many of our fighters come into the cage cross-trained in all the disciplines, making them very dangerous fighters,” explained Adams.  “Currently, Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the United States, and our sport has really benefited from the exposure we have received from the WEC telecasts on HDNet.”

The 90-minute live event, from the Tachi Hotel and Casino in Lemoore California, will feature five exciting bouts, with the main event pitting Marco Ruas Vale Tudo expert Justin “The Executioner” Levens against Capital City Fighting Alliance’s Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith. Smith, who recently won the four-man tournament at WEC 18, will prove to be Levens’ toughest match to date. This fight has been highly anticipated by WEC fans since the tournament and should round out a stellar night of mixed martial arts fights.

A number of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veterans will join the January 13th WEC card with Richard “Cleat” Crunkilton, Chris “Light Out” Lytle, Shonie “Mr. International” Carter and Mike Kyle all competing on the card.

About World Extreme Cagefighting
Known as WEC throughout the MMA community, World Extreme Cagefighting has made a reputation as one of the premier fighting organizations by matching some of the top names in the sport and focusing on the “up-and-comers” in the fight game.  “We really focus on our matches, trying to put people together in the cage that will make for the most exciting fights,” states Adams.  “We spend a lot of time at gyms around the country looking at potential fighters to insure the quality of our events.”

MARQUARDT - Cleared to fight in Nevada

1-5-2006

Las Vegas, Nevada

After nearly six months and numerous delays, UFC middleweight contender Nate Marquardt finally appeared before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to answer allegations stemming from his UFC Ultimate Fight Night bout against Ivan Salaverry.  While not disputing the original findings, Marquardt's truthful testimony was convincing to the commission.  Effective immediately, Marquardt is cleared to fight in Nevada.

I would like to complement the members who make up the Nevada State Athletic Commission.  Their professionalism, keen intellect, and fairness are of the highest order.  The commission's concern for fighter safety sets a standard for others to follow.

BAS RUTTEN - Quits Pride!

12-20-20065

Denver/Broomfield/Boulder, CO

I quit Pride! I know, quite a shocker hey?
Why would people say, it’s a dream job! You are absolutely right, it IS a dream job, and the Company is great, they have unbelievable fighters and unbelievable shows!

Of course this is not without a good reason, and just to make sure that there are NO misunderstandings, I am going to tell you a little bit of what happened. (Pay attention to the “little bit part”) If I don’t do this, people start speculating and rumors will get started and this way you hear it straight from me and not some gossip that people are going to make up.

First of all, I deal with people here in the States that work for Pride, so it’s NOT the fault of the people that work for Pride in Japan. The people in Japan are great people and the President Mr. Sakikabara is a very nice person and he and his staff has always been very good to me.

I came to the States to try to become an actor so I asked them if I could only do the Pride shows for next year, no more Bushido shows, because I already had said “NO” to three movies, all leads, and the reason for that was that I had to go to Japan all the time.

So I asked to do only the Pride shows and because the company grew so much, PLUS I really think that I did a good job and a lot of good work for Pride, I thought it was time for me, after 6 years of working for them, to ask for a raise. Well, here we go, the “very short version” out of respect that I have for the Company. The negotiations started, going back and forward, saying this, saying that, you know, the usual negotiations drills, and it resulted in me finding out that Frank Trigg is co-hosting the next “Pride FSN show”.

Wow!! Now NOT telling me that this was going to happen after everything that I did for them in the last 6 years?? That was something just unbelievable and that was right away the motivation behind my decision to quit. (Of course this is not the only reason, that’s why I said the “little bit”) If they would have at least called or emailed me to inform me that Frank was going to do it, I would have been OK with that, because there are many reasons that they can come up with for that. But doing this behind my back, I mean, don’t these same people here call me “The face of Pride?” No thank you! This is just NOT the way you tread people and trust me, surely not me!

That’s it! It’s also not a thing that I can turn back because once I know that people don’t respect me for what I do for them, it’s irreversible. That’s just my character and I can’t change that, I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror anymore if I did stay with them and still have to work with the people here in the US who don’t respect me.

I feel VERY bad about all this and I am sure that I am going to miss this job tremendously, the fighters, their trainers and friends, the staff in Japan, the friends that I made over there and of course the wonderful reactions from you guys that I always received!!

Understand that I won’t go into details (this is for the people who want to interview me, this is it, I won’t say anything more). First of all because I am not that kind of person and second, because I had a great and outstanding 6 years with Pride and like I said before, Mr. Sakikabara and the Japanese staff always have been treating me with respect and have been very good to me.

I wish Frank Trigg all the best of luck and I hope that he will do a great job! Together with the one and only Mauro Ranallo, who’s the best play-by-play guy in the business I truly believe, it should be no problem!

No worry though, because I am pretty sure that “El Guapo” is not out of the picture and will “pop up” somewhere else, because this is in my blood and you simply can’t get that out just like that!

The one thing that’s good about it, this will be the first time in 6 years that I am home with New Years Eve with my family and I love that!

Happy Holidays everybody, and I really hope that you understand my decision.

Best wishes,
Bas Rutten

ROF 20: ELITE!
Saturday, December 10th, 2005
Douglas County Event Center
Castle Rock, Colorado

With just under 30 days to show time, promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean announces the fight card for the ROF 20: ELITE event. A total of three RING OF FIRE titles will be on the line as fighters from all over the country converge on the DC Event Center in Castle Rock, CO.

In the main event Nebraska wrestler Luke LIL HULK Caudillo will face BJJ stylist Alvin KID Robinson for the ROF Light Weight Championship. Both fighters have been on a roll in ROF competition this year. Caudillo holds the franchise YOUNG GUN championship belt and was successful in defending it twice in 2005. KID Robinson burst on the professional fighting scene with a submission win over Eric Payne in February. He then improved to 3-0 by submitting his next two opponents as well. The build of for this fight in the local scene has been tremendous, and both fighters will have strong a fan base in attendance.

The ROF Welterweight Championship will be on the line as fan favorite Jay Jack takes on New Mexico stand out Thomas Schulte. Schulte is a grappler who's ground game mixes wrestling with BJJ. The former KING OF THE CAGE champion is 12-4 in MMA, with all of his wins coming via submission. Jay Jack is also 12-4, with all but 1 of his wins coming by submission. The fighters have very similar styles, and have actually faced each other once before. The pair had a grappling match in Las Vegas, with Schulte earning a decision on points This could be one of the most even match ups ever seen on a ROF card.

Pete Spratt has fought on some of the top promotions in both Kick Boxing and MMA. The Dallas fighter has been seen on UFC, Shoot Boxing Japan, STRIKE FORCE, A-1 Australia, and recently on Chuck Norris's World Combat League. Spratt loves to come to Denver, and enjoys a huge show of support form the local fans. The same can be said for Albuquerque's Carlos Condit. The ever confident Condit has always been able to sway the ROF crowd with his aggressiveness and desire to win. The two will meet each other in a K-1 Rules Super Fight. Spratt will have the edge in experience under these rules, as Condit is primarily a MMA fighter. Condit has shown his stand up skills before by beating Cruz Chacon and TUF season 2 star Marcus Davis. Both matches were on ROF cards under K-1 rules, and Condit won both by TKO.

The ROF Women's Light Weight belt will be up for grabs as Amanda Buckner steps in the ring with South Dakota's Shayna Baszler. Current champion Buckner is on a 3 fight win streak that started with Yuki Kondo in Japan. Baszler just won gold at Grapplers Quest in Las Vegas and sports a 4-2 MMA record. It will be BJJ vs. BJJ in the most competitive women's match in the promotion's history.

Two of the top fighters from the 2005 K-1 Open try Outs will meet at ROF 20. Colorado's Donald COWBOY Cerrone, and New York's Lamont Forin wowed the judges and both were picked as finalists. When the two met at the call back the next morning, the whole room of fighters, judges, and media were blown away by the tenacity shown. ROF promoter Sven Bean who was on hand as K-1 Director Of Fighter Development signed the match right then and there. The match will be fought under K-1 MAX rules.

Two of the top women Muay Thai fighters will also meet at ROF 20. K-1 USA veteran Gina Carano will bring her 8-2 record on her ROF debut. She will face 2 time national champion Chrisanne BRICKHOUSE Roseliep. The two will compete in a 3 round Muay Thai battle.
