No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, 2-0 in MMA
04-03-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-04-03T00_28_27-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier, the 2007 world bronze medalist and two-time U.S. Olympian in freestyle wrestling, who was victorious on March 26 in his second mixed martial arts fight with a first-round knockout over John Devine on a Strikeforce card in Fresno, California.

We spoke about this fight and how and why he was able to triumph so quickly in it. He explained how he is applying and incorporating solid boxing technique into his mixed martial arts offense and defense. We discussed why this fight was not televised by Showtime, which has drawn criticism from many fans. We of course discussed the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships, how this remains a tremendous event, some of the top performances at it, and why some colleges produce so many mixed martial arts fighters, including Oklahoma State, where he wrestled and was an All-American. We discussed how many who think they understand mixed martial arts have little or no understanding of the level of wrestling and athleticism in freestyle, in which he won his world bronze medal in 2007 and was a two-time Olympian, and much more.

No Holds Barred: Mikey Burnett, Fighter
03-28-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-03-27T16_09_59-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts fighter Mikey Burnett (http://www.facebook.com/mikey.burnett).

A veteran of the UFC in the 1990s and a member of the world-renowned Lion's Den, Mikey tried a return to action on "The Ultimate Fighter" television show in 2006, but with very disappointing results. Injuries ended his comeback, which are now the subject of a lawsuit.

Despite these injuries, Mikey continues to stay active, as co-owner and a trainer at the Oklahoma Fight Club in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, near Tulsa (http://www.oklahomafightclub.com/main.html).

We spoke with Mikey by telephone Friday afternoon, beginning with a little fun chat about country music, of which we are both fans. But this lengthy discussion mainly focused on his fighting career and his plans, including the controversy around his appearance on "The Ultimate Fighter". He explained the type of pain he has to endure, which is the result of the injuries he suffered while fighting, and how he copes with it. We discussed the culture on that show which led to his antics on it. He stressed that he never wanted to file a lawsuit, but explained why he felt it was necessary. He told us of his current activities, including his training in jiu-jitsu to go with his background in boxing, wrestling, and submission fighting, and much more.

This is the type of story which is among the most important in mixed martial arts, about the real life of a real fighter, and we have it for you right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson, Melvina Lathan

03-18-2010

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-03-17T10_47_12-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the head wrestling coach of the legendary Iowa State Cyclones, and Melvina Lathan, the chairwoman of the New York State Athletic Commission.

We spoke with Coach Jackson Wednesday morning, the day before the opening of the 2010 NCAA Div. I Wrestling Championships (http://www.ncaa.com/sports/m-wrestl/champpage/m-wrestl-div1-index.html), which takes place Thursday, March 18, to Saturday, March 20, at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska. He discussed the prospects for his team to win a national title at this event, as well as what he expects from Iowa State's top seeds, Jake Varner at 197 pounds and David Zabriskie at heavyweight. We also discussed what he expects from the rest of his team, and how they might fare at this tournament. And he explained why he, along with many others, views the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as "the best wrestling tournament in the world."

We also spoke with Melvina Lathan, the chairwoman of the New York State Athletic Commission, Tuesday afternoon at Madison Square Garden at the news conference for the May 15 Amir Khan-Paulie Malignaggi fight. Our subject was not boxing, but the likelihood of New York State finally legalizing and sanctioning mixed martial arts after 13 years of an unjust law banning it. She confirmed for us that measures legalizing and sanctioning mixed martial arts are included in the proposed 2010-2011 budget, and discussed the timetable for when we may actually have sanctioned mixed martial arts events in New York after that budget is eventually adopted by the State Legislature.

No Holds Barred: Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce
03-13-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-03-13T01_39_46-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Scott Coker, the CEO and founder of the Strikeforce mixed martial arts promotion.

There has been much said and written about the next events which Strikeforce will be having, and not all of it is based on fact. Some of it is downright misleading and hopelessly biased. So we decided to speak to the man himself about what Strikeforce is planning in order to get the truth.

After a Strikeforce Challengers event on Showtime on March 26 in Fresno, California, Strikeforce will return to CBS Saturday, April 17, with three title fights on a card at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Headlining that card will be the Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields taking on the former Pride two-division champion and a two-time U.S. Olympian in Greco-Roman wrestling, Dan Henderson. Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will defend his belt against the unbeaten "King" Mo Lawal. And Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will fight the Dream champion and submission master, Shinya Aoki of Japan, for the Strikeforce belt.

We spoke with Scott Coker not only about the importance of this loaded card, but also how it will definitely take place April 17 in Nashville and be shown live in the U.S. on CBS. We discussed their plans for their next major show, which will be May 15 from St. Louis, Missouri, and shown on Showtime, headlined by Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem fighting Brett Rogers, with more details on the title situation in that fight to be announced shortly.

We also discussed when he expects the top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko, to return to action in Strikeforce, and the status of the co-promotion arrangement between Strikeforce and M-1 Global, of which Fedor is a partner. We talked about the overall importance of co-promotion in mixed martial arts, and the branding situation, where M-1 Global wanted it made clearer than it had been that they were co-promoting events with Strikeforce. And we discussed possible opponents for Fedor, including the colorful but controversial Josh Barnett, who is currently under suspension for a doping violation, and much more.

So you need not waste time with the rumor-mongers or purveyors of misinformation, because once we again we have the truth for you, right here on No Holds Barred.

Eddie Goldman and Ron Scott Stevens on Joey Reynolds Show
03-12-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-03-12T01_54_46-08_00

Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and Ron Scott Stevens, former chair of the New York State Athletic Commission and a playwright, were guests on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" late Thursday night/early Friday morning, March 11/12.

We had another lively, informative, and fun discussion not only, of course, about boxing, but also numerous other topics, some related and others not. Joey talked about the continuing woes facing society when there are so many people with no jobs, Eddie explained why he is very positive about the growing sport of roller derby, and Ron outlined his history as a playwright and boxing official. We discussed the problems of steroids and illegal and dangerous drugs in all of sports, and how they harm the health of the athletes. We noted how the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight this Saturday, March 13, at Cowboys Stadium in Texas, is taking place in a state with no mandatory drug testing, and how the refusal of Pacquiao to take state-of-the-art, Olympic-style blood testing for doping led to the cancellation of a proposed mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ron also revealed that he wants to bring boxing to the new Nets' arena in Brooklyn, where he lives, and Eddie confirmed that he is indeed not just a sports journalist but a cultural critic.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at 1 AM ET and runs to 5 AM ET. The show will soon be moving to television, so stay tuned for more details.

We also comment on the decision win for Vic Darchinyan over Rodrigo Guerrero.

In college wrestling, Oklahoma State pulled off the upset by edging Iowa State to win the 2010 Big 12 Wrestling Championships. We discuss some of the top performances from that tournament, including the impressive victory by top 197-pound wrestler Jake Varner of Iowa State.

We also comment on some of the action in mixed martial arts, including the TKO win by Dominick Cruz over Brian Bowles and the submission victory by Joseph Benavidez over Miguel Torres on the WEC show.

And we close by critically discussing some recent articles from The Harvard Crimson and Bleacher Report which question the direction of mixed martial arts from very different directions.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Fabio Holanda about the Canadian North American qualifiers (http://www.abudhabipro.ca) for the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010.

The Canadian North American qualifiers will take place this Saturday, March 6, at the Pierre-Charbonneau Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It will feature competitors from all across North America, and is scheduled to start at 11 AM. For those unable to attend the live event, there will be a free webcast of it. All the information about the live event and the webcast can be found on the event's web site, at http://www.abudhabipro.ca.

The Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 will be held April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (http://www.worldpro2010.com).

We also begin the show with a commentary on the implications for the combat sports of the huge television audiences which watched the Canada-U.S. Olympic gold medal hockey game this past Sunday. Unlike the NHL, Olympic hockey does not allow fighting. We also comment on the entrance into mixed martial arts of a growing number of long past-their-prime athletes from other sports, including Herschel Walker from American football, Jose Canseco from baseball, and now James Toney from boxing, and what that says about how mixed martial arts is positioned and promoted.

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS - Results
02-27-2010

Denver, CO

SAN JOSE, Calif.  – Before a sold out crowd of 2,322, former ballet dancer turned undefeated professional mixed martial arts (MMA) star Sarah Kaufman (11-0) became the first STRIKEFORCE Women’s Welterweight (135 pounds) Champion in history by powering her way to a five-round unanimous decision over Japan’s Takayo Hashi (12-2) in the STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event at San Jose’s Civic Auditorium on Friday, Feb. 26, on SHOWTIME®.

Luke Rockhold (7-1) continued his climb up the middleweight (185 pounds) ladder with a stunning first-round (2:24) TKO over Paul Bradley (12-2). A middleweight contest between former South African national wrestling champion Trevor Prangley (22-5-1) and France’s Karl Amoussou (11-2-2) ended prematurely after Prangley accidentally poked Amoussou in the eye, leading to a doctor stoppage and technical draw being declared.

From the outset, Kaufman pressed the action with a stiff jab and one-two punch combinations, but was unable to finish Hashi who repeatedly backpedaled her way out of trouble. Kaufman landed her best shots in the first round, dropping Hashi with a straight right hand.

In the third stanza, Kaufman sent Hashi reeling back and nearly put down the Japanese fighter for a second time in the bout with a straight right hand. After a Kaufman jab snapped Hashi’s head back, Hashi responded by shooting for a takedown that Kaufman stuffed.

A chess match ensued for the remainder of the bout. Kaufman continued to score with her hands and right leg kick while Hashi retreated to avoid imminent danger. All three judges scored all five rounds in favor of Kaufman.

In the first round of their much anticipated matchup, Rockhold dropped Bradley with a right hand to the side of the head. Bradley fought his way back to his feet, but Rockhold quickly went on the attack, scoring a head kick and following up with three straight knee strikes to the body.

Badly battered from the series of blows, Bradley turned his back, prompting the referee to immediately stop the action.

As expected, Amoussou came out of the gates firing punches at Prangley, who covered up and countered the Frenchman’s assault with his own hands. Prangley scored a takedown, but was unable to advance his position from half guard.

After the referee stood up the fighters, Prangley, with an open left hand, accidentally poked Amoussou in the right eye. The ringside physician immediately entered the cage and examined Amoussou, who was unable to open his eye, and declared the fighter unable to continue at the 4:14 mark of the first round (According to MMA rules in the state of California, the ringside physician has the discretion to stop a bout in the event that an accidental foul causes an injury).

In other action Yancy Medeiros (5-0) of Waianae, Hawaii dominated Raul Castillo (6-1) at middleweight with continuous flurries throughout the matchup between the unbeaten fighters.

Medeiros stuffed Castillo’s repeated takedown attempts and continued to pour on the punishment with both hands, putting Castillo on the canvas with a right hand in the third round. After an exchange of shots brought the bout to a close, all three judges awarded the fight to Medeiros.

Like Medeiros, Tarec Saffiedine (8-2) maintained an all-out stand up offensive in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight with James Terry (7-2) for three straight rounds, opening a cut on Terry’s lower lip and bringing about a welt under Terry’s left eye.

Terry repeatedly attempted to bring the fight to the mat, but Saffiedine defended the takedowns well and responded with more strikes. After three rounds, Saffiedine was declared a unanimous points winner.

Amongst those in attendance at Civic Auditorium, was MMA's newest star, football legend Herschel Walker, as well as STRIKEFORCE World Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, and STRIKEFORCE World Lightweight Champion Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez.

During an interview with STRIKEFORCE Challengers host Mauro Ranallo, Walker said, "(MMA) is the toughest sport there is. To step in the cage and go mano-a-mano, there's nothing like it. It is the toughest training I've ever done."

Regarding his future in the sport, the 47-year-old Walker said, "I will leave that up to my team at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy, San Jose) when I get back in the gym. We'll see if they say I am capable of going again. (If they do), we'll do it again."

Pancrase Newswire

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-02-21T08_16_57-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman previews the 140-pound title unification fight between WBC champion Devon Alexander (19-0, 12 KOs) and IBF champion Juan Urango (22-2-1, 17 KOs). This fight will take place Saturday, March 6, at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, and be shown live in the U.S. on HBO.

We spoke with both Devon Alexander and Juan Urango on a media conference call this past week, and the discussion of how they each will approach this fight resulted in some verbal fireworks. We also spoke with Don King, who promotes Alexander, about the importance of title unification fights, and also got comments from him on the importance of the Internet media.

In addition, we contrast the Alexander-Urango fight, which should be very competitive, with the numerous mismatches and showcase fights typical of boxing, such as the Giovanni Segura-Walter Tello brawl this past Saturday night, February 20, which was entertaining but one-sided.
