No Holds Barred: Felicia Oh on Women's Grappling Camp, and Everything Else
01-18-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-01-17T16_02_27-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the grappling star and double gold medalist at the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships in December, Felicia Oh (http://www.feliciaoh.com).

We started our lengthy discussion with a preview of the upcoming Women's Grappling Camp (http://www.womensgrappling.org/wgc2010).

This takes place January 25-29, 2010, at Big John McCarthy's Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, California (http://bjmuta.com).

This camp is open to women of all levels of experience and expertise, from first-timers and beginners all the way up to world champions. Besides training on the mat, there will seminars on many topics. The atmosphere at the camp will actually be like a camp, as opposed to a typical training seminar. The camp promises, "All girls, all grappling, all the time."

This interview was also not your typical pre-event rundown. Besides previewing the Women's Grappling Camp, we delved into a wide-ranging series of topics including how women on the mat must deal with the male-dominated world of combat sports, the type of women who train in jiu-jitsu and grappling, the growth of women's grappling, the cultural barriers to the participation of women in combat sports, her own observations on her decision to focus so much of her life on jiu-jitsu and grappling, the role of planning in life, the good and bad of technology, how jiu-jitsu is very cerebral, why intellectuals should train in combat sports, the future of the media, why neither of us have any tattoos, and even more.

This is another incredible discussion, and we have it for you right here on No Holds Barred.

Also, Felicia Oh has also been nominated for the Dec. 2009 U.S. Women's Athlete of the Month in an online poll organized by the U.S. Olympic Committee. You can vote for her here: http://twtpoll.com/nnuwgc. Voting ends January 18.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Igor Zinoviev-Mario Sperry Fight from Extreme Fighting 1
01-16-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-01-16T01_45_18-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and senior correspondent, the legendary martial artist and matchmaker John Perretti, about one of the greatest fights in mixed martial arts history: the clash between Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu great Mario Sperry and then-little-known Russian judoka Igor Zinoviev at Battlecade Extreme Fighting 1 on November 18, 1995, in Wilmington, North Carolina.

John Perretti, who was both the matchmaker and a television analyst for Extreme Fighting, called this back-and-forth battle "one of the most heroic fights in mixed martial arts history." A clip of the ending of this fight can be seen here: http://www.evtv1.com/player.aspx?itemnum=7585.

We discuss this fight in-depth, place it in its historical context, and provide inside revelations previously not reported.

Professor Franca is organizing the Abu Dhabi Pro West Coast Trials (http://www.abudhabibjj.com). This tournament takes place Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium in Santa Cruz, California.

This is a qualifying event for the richest and most prestigious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event in the world, the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup 2010 (http://www.worldpro2010.com).

That event takes place April 15-17 in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and will distribute the biggest prize in the history of Jiu-Jitsu, US$150.000.

Nine qualifiers from the West Coast Trials will be flown to Abu Dhabi to represent the U.S. at the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup.

In our interview with Professor Franca, we discuss the significance of the West Coast Trials and this event, the rules, the many levels of competitors expected to compete, the enormous growth in the popularity of jiu-jitsu, whether jiu-jitsu can establish itself as a professional spectator sport, how to get more information about this event, and more.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Mayweather-Pacquiao Cancellation and Future of Drug Testing
01-12-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-01-11T23_33_35-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the cancellation of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight after the two camps failed to agree on how to conduct the prefight drug testing, and what should be the future of drug testing for the combat sports. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

Among the many topics we discussed was why the last-minute compromise offered by the Mayweather camp, for an end to blood testing 14 days before the fight, would have been inadequate in preventing dope cheating. We discussed various methods widely used by dope cheats, including the use of EPO, and how many athletes beat even the current random tests. We stressed the need for regulatory and sanctioning bodies in the combat sports to update their antiquated procedures if they are serious about dealing with this issue. We also discussed the use of performance enhancing drugs in other sports such as baseball.

We discussed how the collapse of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is yet another milestone in the collapse of boxing, and how other sports like mixed martial arts are benefiting from it. But we also discussed how the issue of doping in mixed martial arts is not being properly addressed and must be, lest that sport sooner or later suffers a similar fate as boxing. And, of course, we skewered most (but not all) of the combat sports media, which still refuse to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth on these issues.

We closed with some suggestions for those who are honest and serious about cleaning up these sports to work together to intensify the education of the public on these issues, and to influence policy-making regarding drug testing.

Will all these anti-doping efforts eventually succeed? A lot depends on how the public and the fans react, and this discussion helps outline a course of action for those who truly want clean sport.

No Holds Barred: Travis Tygart of U.S. Anti-Doping Agency on Mayweather-Pacquiao and Drug Testing
01-08-2010
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-01-07T16_22_33-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses the issue of drug testing and the apparently cancelled Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao fight with Travis Tygart, the chief executive officer of USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (http://usantidoping.org/).

USADA, which sees its mission as to "preserve the value and integrity of athletic competition through just initiatives that prevent, deter and detect violations of true sport", was initially approached to provide information about drug testing to the organizers of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. USADA is the official anti-doping agency for Olympic, Pan American, and Paralympic sport in the U.S.

According to numerous news reports, plans to hold this fight March 13 were scrapped when the Pacquiao camp refused to agree to the demands of the Mayweather camp for Olympic-style, random blood testing of both fighters for banned substances.

In a lengthy interview, Travis Tygart explains why only conducting urine testing for banned and dangerous substances is ineffective, why blood testing is needed to test for substances like human growth hormone, and why this is necessary to protect the clean athletes while catching the dope cheats. We discuss the need for random, out-of-competition testing, as well as debunk the various excuses given against blood testing, such as it weakening an athlete, the expense of the test, their safety, etc.

"Our clean athletes are demanding for more testing," he stated in this interview.

Defending the rights of these clean athletes is paramount, which is why all supporters of honest sport should also demand that these state-of-the-art testing procedures be utilized in professional sports worldwide.

No Holds Barred: Kevin Jackson on Iowa State Wrestling
01-06-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2010-01-05T18_42_48-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Kevin Jackson, the head wrestling coach for the legendary Iowa State Cyclones (http://www.cyclones.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10700&KEY=&SPID=4248&SPSID=46632).

We had spoken with Coach Jackson at the beginning of the 2009-10 college wrestling season when Iowa State was ranked second in the NCAA Division I in the preseason polls. After two months of competition, Iowa State is still ranked second, only trailing their long-time rivals, the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

In a lengthy phone interview, we tracked the progress of Iowa State thus far in their quest for a national championship. We discussed Iowa State's defending NCAA champion and three-time NCAA finalist, senior Jake Varner, who is the top-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds; the emergence of redshirt freshman Andrew Long at 125 pounds, who just defeated third-ranked Zach Sanders of Minnesota, 8-4, in the Iowa State-Minnesota dual meet January 3; and the performances of highly-ranked wrestlers Nick Gallick at 141, David Zabriskie at heavyweight, Jon Reader at 165, and Nick Fanthorpe at 133.

We also discussed the rash of injuries this season in college wrestling; Iowa State's narrow 18-16 dual meet loss to Iowa in December; how the Cyclones are improving their marketing and presentation of their meets; how wrestlers like Mo Lawal who now fight in mixed martial arts are viewed by some; and the next task for the Cyclones, the two-day, 16-team tournament involving most of the top teams in the U.S. at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, January 9 and 10, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa; and more.

No Holds Barred: Jay Hieron
01-04-2010

Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with one of the most talented fighters in the mixed martial arts, the former IFL welterweight champion Jay Hieron (http://www.jayhieron.tv).

After the IFL ceased operations, however, Jay has had a rocky road finding fights, despite being the reigning IFL champion when it folded and not having lost a fight since winning that title in December 2007.

Now he has signed with Strikeforce, and after a successful debut with that company in August, his next fight is likely to be on their January 30 card in Sunrise, Florida, near Miami.

In a lengthy interview, we spoke with Jay Hieron about all this and what is next for him. We discussed his views on why a fight between him and Nick Diaz fell through, and when he believes they may finally meet. We spoke about how he has managed to persevere in the face of so many challenges in his career, including mistakes he made early on. We discussed his development from being a wrestler in mixed martial arts to becoming a complete fighter, and much more.

Jay Hieron believes that 2010 will be his year, and you can hear just why on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Mayweather-Pacquiao Drug-Testing Controversy
12-28-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-12-27T18_30_18-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Dr. Margaret Goodman about the heated drug-testing controversy which threatens to derail the proposed fight between top pound-for-pound boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao on March 13, 2010, in Las Vegas. Dr. Goodman is a neurologist, the former chair of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, and also the medical correspondent for No Holds Barred.

In a lengthy interview recorded Sunday evening, we discuss why it is "the right thing" for the regulatory bodies of sports like boxing and mixed martial arts to adopt the protocols of the World Anti-Doping Agency (http://www.wada-ama.org/en/) and have random prefight blood testing of all fighters for widely-used banned and dangerous substances, including EPO and human growth hormone. Thus far, the Mayweather camp has insisted on such testing, while the Pacquiao camp has vehemently opposed that.

Dr. Goodman explains why the current testing procedures used by the various athletic commissions are "behind the times" and must be changed. We discuss how the controversy around the proposed Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is further killing and discrediting boxing, and why the motivations of the Mayweather camp in bringing this issue to the fore are far less important than the need for such testing to protect the health and safety of the fighters.

This interview provides scientifically-based information and analysis that most of the media either does not or will not dare discuss, but it is all right here for you on No Holds Barred.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary Ricardo Liborio of American Top Team (http://americantopteam.com/).

As head coach of USA Grappling, he also led the U.S. team to victories at the 2009 FILA Grappling World Championships, held December 12-13 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

We spoke with the master himself Wednesday to get his summation of this event. Our lengthy interview included discussing the international significance of this event, why he feels that it should focus more on the no-gi rather than the gi competition, the future of grappling, his plans for 2010, and much more.

JASON GENET -  Manager For Colorado Fighters Named in SEC Fraud Complaint

12-23-2009

Denver, CO

Colorado MMA Fighters Shane Carwin, Eliot Marshall, Brendan Schaub, Rocky Johnson, Chase Hackett, and Alicia Gumm's Manager Named In Fraud Case

U.S. SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION
Litigation Release No. 21232 / September 30, 2009
SEC v. Jason M. Genet, Civil Action No. 09-CV-4215 (E.D.N.Y.) (Seybert, J)
SEC Files Fraud Charges Against Jason M. Genet, Former Stock Promoter of China Energy Savings Technology, Inc.

The Securities and Exchange Commission today filed a civil action against Jason M. Genet of Phoenix, Arizona, alleging that Genet participated in an elaborate stock manipulation scheme involving China Energy Savings Technology, Inc., a now-defunct Nevada company with purported operations in China. In its complaint, the Commission alleges that Genet helped China Energy falsely obtain a listing on the Nasdaq National Market System ("NMS") and entered into secret arrangements to give away China Energy stock to people who agreed to purchase China Energy stock in the market, thereby creating the false and misleading impression of bona fide and active investor interest in China Energy. The Complaint alleges that Genet acted in concert with Chiu Wing Chiu, a Chinese national who secretly controlled China Energy. The Commission previously sued Chiu and his associates for their conduct in the China Energy fraud.

Among other things, the Commission's Complaint alleges that Genet played a crucial role in the illegal "pump and dump" manipulation of the common stock of China Energy. According to the Complaint, as part of the manipulation, Genet: (i) helped China Energy falsely obtain a listing on the Nasdaq NMS by helping China Energy to give away shares to hundreds of persons, and thereby created the false and misleading impression that China Energy had a bona fide and active shareholder base; (ii) engaged in unregistered distributions of securities; and (iii) entered into secret arrangements to give away China Energy stock to persons who agreed to purchase China Energy stock in the market, and thereby created the false and misleading impression of active trading and interest in China Energy. In payment for his fraudulent activities, Genet received thousands of shares of China Energy stock, which he later sold into the artificially inflated market, realizing illicit profits in excess of $1.7 million.

The Commission's complaint charges Genet with violating the antifraud and registration provisions of the federal securities laws (Section 10(b) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 and Rule 10b-5 thereunder, and Sections 5(a), 5(c), and 17(a) of the Securities Act of 1933). The Commission seeks a permanent injunction against Genet prohibiting him from further violations of the securities laws, disgorgement of his ill-gotten gains, civil penalties and a penny stock bar.

The Commission previously filed fraud charges against China Energy, Chiu Wing Chiu, and several of Chiu's associates, seeking permanent injunctions, disgorgement, penalties, and other relief, as well as an order freezing $3.9 million in assets held in four U.S. brokerage accounts by nominees of Chiu. See Lit. Rel. 19933 (Dec. 4, 2006). On March 27, 2009, the court entered final judgments against Chiu, Lai Fun "Stella" Sim, Jun Tang Zhao, Sun Li, and New Solomon Consultants, finding them liable for fraud, and ordering them to pay disgorgement, prejudgment interest, and civil penalties. The court also imposed officer-and-director bars against Chiu, Sim, Zhao, and Li. On July 31, 2009, the court entered a final judgment against the relief defendant nominees of Chiu, ordering that the $3.9 million still held in U.S. brokerage accounts be turned over as proceeds of the fraud.

For additional related actions by the Commission against China Energy, see Rel. 34-53839 (May 19, 2006) (suspending trading in China Energy stock); Rel. 34-54503A (Sept. 26, 2006) (imposing a second trading suspension in China Energy stock); Admin. Proc. 34-54502 (Sept. 26, 2006) (instituting administrative proceedings against China Energy to determine whether to revoke the company's securities); and Admin. Proc. 34-54881 (Dec. 6, 2006) (administrative law judge's order revoking China Energy's stock registration statements).
The Commission would like to acknowledge the assistance afforded by the Nasdaq Stock Market in this matter.

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-12-22T05_39_23-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the mixed martial arts fighter and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal (http://kingmo.us/).

Making his debut for the Strikeforce mixed martial arts promotion on their card held this past Saturday night, December 19, "King" Mo scored a knockout over mixed martial arts veteran Mike Whitehead in just 3:08 of the first round. His mixed martial arts record now stands at 6-0, with 5 knockouts.

In a telephone interview recorded Monday, December 21, we had a lengthy discussion about his latest victory. We discussed what happened in this fight, his praiseworthy boxing technique, why he still has haters who do not understand his level of skill and athleticism, how he is being treated by the Strikeforce promotion, his plans for the coming year, fighting in a cage vs. fighting in a ring, contracts in mixed martial arts, the dangers of punching on the ground, how he would like to change the rules of mixed martial arts, his entourage of "queens" who accompanied him to the cage but were not shown on this live telecast, and more.

STRIKEFORCE "Revolution" - Results

12-20-2009

Denver, CO

From the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Dec. 20, 2009) – No stranger to stirring comeback victories, Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith rallied to knock out Cung Le, Gilbert Melendez regained the STRIKEFORCE lightweight world title in perhaps the Fight of the Year, and STRIKEFORCE newcomers “Jacare’’ Souza and “King Mo’’ Lawal triumphed impressively as STRIKEFORCE closed out an amazing year in spectacular fashion with an incredible fight card before 9,362 at HP Pavilion Saturday on SHOWTIME®.

After Melendez (17-2) of San Francisco earned a unanimous, five-round decision and avenged a loss to Josh Thomson (16-3), of San Jose, and Brazil’s Jacare (11-2) and King Mo (6-0), of Carlsbad, Calif., had earlier scored first-round victories over Matt Lindland (21-7) of Oregon City, Ore., and Mike Whitehead, (24-7) of Las Vegas, respectively, Smith stormed back from the brink of defeat – again – to knock out the previously undefeated Le at 3:25 of the third round.

The event, presented by SHOWTIME and STRIKEFORCE, aired live simultaneously on SHOWTIME® and on the Web (Strikeforce: All Access) at http://strikeforce.sho.com. The SHOWTIME telecast began at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast); the Strikeforce: All Access webcast went at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT and is available through Dec. 24 at the site.

Smith (18-6), of Elk Grove, Calif., is known for dramatic victories (see: Benji Radach on April 1, 2009, at HP Pavilion and a highlight-reel win over Pete Sell on Nov. 11, 2006, to name two). But the victory over Le (6-1), of San Jose, may be impossible to top.

Southpaw Le, making his first start in 21 months, had totally dominated for two-and-one-half rounds. The fight seemed over at least a couple of times as everything was going Le’s way. His trademark spinning back kicks were connecting almost every time and they were knocking Smith around the cage. At one point, with Smith on the ground after getting dropped, Le seemed to throw more than 50 consecutive punches. He slammed Smith once.

But there is no quit in the courageous Smith, a proven finisher who somehow summoned the energy and heart – again – to twice drop Le. After he connected with two rights hands after Le was down, the referee stepped in and stopped it.

“This was one helluva fight,’’ Smith said afterward. “He had me the first two-and-a-half rounds, but I’ve got a hard head. On the knockdowns, I faked the right and threw the left. Everyone always looks for my right, but the left hook is my best punch.

“Right now, I just want to go home and enjoy Christmas with my kids and family and friends. It never matters who I fight. I just want these types of tough fights.’’

Le, a former STRIKEFORCE middleweight titleholder who relinquished the belt to concentrate on an acting career, offered no excuses.

“He got me with a punch,’’ Le said. “I did my best, he did his best tonight and we both fought our hearts out. This was a great fight. It was not about focus, or a lack thereof. I just got caught. It is what it is.’’

In a wildly exciting 25-minute, crowd-pleasing give-and-take slugfest that featured a bit of everything, Melendez outpointed Thomson by the scores of 49-46 twice and 49-47. Most everybody had rubber match on their minds when it was over.

“I feel great,’’ Melendez said. “I sparred better for this fight than I did for our first, but Josh is the toughest guy I’ve fought and the toughest guy around.’’

Said Thomson, who unanimously outpointed Melendez over five rounds on June 27, 2008, but has not fought since Sept. 20, 2008, due to injuries:

“There are no excuses. It had nothing to do with the layoff. Gilbert was the better fighter tonight. I’ll do whatever STRIKEFORCE wants. I’m up for a third fight if that’s what they want.’’

Jacare, a talented, non-nonsense, aggressive-minded sort, who will be an immediate threat in STRIKEFORCE’s deep, talent-laden 185-pound weight class, submitted the more experienced Lindland, a 2000 Olympic Games silver medalist, with an arm triangle choke at 4:18 of the first round.

A flamboyant showman, King Mo was escorted down the aisle and into the cage for the opening bout of the telecast by six young, dancing ladies and wearing a crown on his head.

The southpaw, who seemingly is willing to fight anybody in any weight class, dropped Whitehead with a huge overhand right hand, followed with six more punches before the ref stepped in.

“This was a good fight for me, but I am ready for anybody,’’ King Mo said.

Main Card Bouts:
1. Scott Smith defeated Cung Le by TKO (stoppage due to strikes) at 3:25 of rd 3
2. Gilbert Melendez defeated Josh Thomson by unanimous decision (49-47, 49-46, 49-46)
3. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza defeated Matt Lindland by arm triangle at 4:16 of rd 1

At the Grappling World Championships, which he was observing, we spoke about his life and this new book. We also discussed the forthcoming chapters in his life, as he will now be training under the legendary Ricardo Liborio at American Top Team. There he will be learning submissions, jiu-jitsu, and grappling, as he prepares potentially to become a mixed martial arts fighter. We also discuss his plans to return to wrestling for the 2012 Olympics, how he has been a lifelong student of boxing, and more.

Next is another member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, Ben Askren (http://www.benaskren.net/). He won a gold medal at the 2009 Grappling World Championships this past weekend at 84 kg/185 lbs. in men's no-gi grappling. We spoke with him candidly about what this victory does and does not mean, why he wants changes to these grappling rules to attract more jiu-jitsu athletes to this event, how he will continue to wrestle as well as improve his jiu-jitsu skills, his signing by the Bellator Fighting Championships to begin fighting in their mixed martial arts events in April 2010, training to compete in wrestling, grappling, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts all at once, and more.

We next speak with a regular guest on No Holds Barred, the undefeated mixed martial arts fighter and freestyle and college wrestling champion, "King" Mo Lawal (http://kingmo.us/). He will be making his debut in Strikeforce when he faces mixed martial arts veteran Mike Whitehead in a heavyweight bout on the December 19 show. We spoke with "King" Mo about how he plans to fight his opponent, fighting at heavyweight, his first fight in a cage, how he has been treated in Strikeforce, whether he prefers competing in mixed martial arts or wrestling, his expected entourage of "queens" who will accompany him to the cage, and much more.

The main event of this December 19 Strikeforce card features the unbeaten former Strikeforce middleweight champion, Cung Le, who vacated his title to concentrate on an acting career, returning to competition to face veteran Scott Smith. On a recent media conference call, we spoke with both Cung Le and Scott Smith about whether or not Cung Le will also have to fight ring rust, what to expect in this fight regarding the mix of striking and grappling, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with grappling star Felicia Oh (http://www.feliciaoh.com).

At the 2009 Grappling World Championships, held December 12-13 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, she won two world championships, winning both the no-gi and gi tournaments in the women's 50 kg/110 lbs. division. She adds these to her long list of grappling and jiu-jitsu credentials, which include a silver medal at the 2007 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships in the women's 55 kg division.

Besides competing in all these events, Felicia Oh is employed as a grappling and fitness instructor at the Big John McCarthy Ultimate Training Academy in Valencia, California (http://bjmuta.com).

In a lengthy and heartfelt interview held just after she won that second world championship, she explains how and why she went from being a self-described computer geek to a world champion, and how grappling and jiu-jitsu have become key components of her life. She discusses combat sports and the need to have a healthy lifestyle. She explains how grappling helps her appreciate life. She frankly discusses why she made the life choices she did. And she gives you a glimpse of why so many people who know her respect her so much.

Felicia Oh is thus a star both on and off the mat, and you can hear her on this edition of No Holds Barred.

So by popular demand, the UFC, in partnership with Reed Exhibitions, has announced that the second UFC Fan Expo will take place May 28-29, 2010, back in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti, the Anvil Effect, and Fighter Safety in MMA
12-09-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-12-08T17_12_32-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague and senior correspondent, the legendary martial artist and matchmaker John Perretti, about the growing safety concerns in mixed martial arts and boxing, and what must be done to make these sports safer for the athletes immediately.

We begin with John rebuking the notion that mixed martial arts today, with all its rules and regulations, is safer than it was in the 1990s, when he served first as matchmaker for Battlecade/Extreme Fighting and then UFC. We discuss why both incompetent officiating, and the style of fighting and widespread use of techniques such as elbows and punches to the head on the ground, which are so in vogue today in mixed martial arts, have increased the danger to the fighters. As John puts it, these techniques create an "anvil" effect, and thus should no longer be allowed.

We also discuss why so many older fighters are being recycled and still booked in companies like UFC, and the danger that creates.

And we address the latest in a series of scandals emerging from boxing this past weekend. We discuss why one judge in the exciting and closely-contested Paul Williams-Sergio Martinez fight actually scored it 119-110 for Williams, the latest hand-wrap scandal that led to Melissa Hernandez not fighting Holly Holm, the riot in the ring in Minneapolis when the referee did not hear the bell to end the first round of the Joey Abell-Raphael Butler fight and Abell knocked Butler out after that bell, the ending of the padded undefeated records of Tyrone Brunson and Dmitriy Salita, and more.

This is another groundbreaking discussion, raising issues few dare even to admit exist, and it is all right here for you on No Holds Barred.

DAN HENDERSON SIGNS WITH STRIKEFORCE

12-08-2009

Denver, CO

NEW YORK (Dec. 7, 2009)–Four-time mixed martial arts (MMA) world champion and two-time United States Olympic wrestler Dan Henderson will enter a new chapter in his legendary career after signing a multi-fight agreement with world championship MMA promotion STRIKEFORCE.

Henderson, the only fighter in history to simultaneously hold two titles in two different weight classes – the welterweight (183 pounds) and light heavyweight (205 pounds) crowns - with a major MMA promotion – PRIDE Fighting Championships – will enter the STRIKEFORCE cage after earning “Knockout of the Night” honors with his stunning second-round KO (3:20) over Michael “The Count” Bisping at UFC 100 in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 11, 2009.

“I'm very happy to be a part of STRIKEFORCE and their partnership with CBS and SHOWTIME®,” said the 39-year-old Henderson, who represented The United States in Greco-Roman wrestling in both the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics.

“STRIKEFORCE and its growing roster of world class talent will offer me many exciting fights and has the ability to bring many new fans from all around the world to mixed martial arts. I am grateful to (STRIKEFORCE Founder and CEO) Scott Coker for the opportunity to help make this happen and for treating me with the utmost respect throughout our negotiations.

“I’d also like to thank Dana (White) and the UFC for the opportunities they provided me and I wish them ongoing success. I’ll continue to watch their events and I hope they’ll tune in to my fights in STRIKEFORCE. After all, I’m a true fan of our fantastic sport and would love only to see MMA continue to grow.”

“We are excited to welcome Dan Henderson to STRIKEFORCE,” said Coker. “Dan is one of the world’s premiere fighters who has lived out an extraordinary career. We are looking forward to having him compete for us.”

At both Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State University, Henderson established himself as a force in collegiate wrestling, reaching the NCAA championships in 1993.

In 1997, Henderson entered the world of MMA, winning the Brazil Open, a four-man heavyweight tournament. One year later, he was the victor of the UFC 17 tournament, defeating both Allan Goes and Carlos Newton in the same night on May 15, 1998.

Following a stellar six plus year career with the now-defunct, Japan-based PRIDE Fighting Championships where he conquered a number of all-time greats including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva, and Vitor Belfort, Henderson re-entered UFC. He was selected to serve as coach of Team USA on the ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter reality series, which premiered on Spike TV on April 1, 2009.

STRIKEFORCE in March 2009 signed a multi-year agreement to stage live MMA events on premium cable television network SHOWTIME. The promotion made its live, primetime debut on CBS with the “Fedor vs. Rogers” mega-fight that it co-promoted with M-1 Global on

Saturday, November 7 and generated 5.46 million viewers for the main event between the world’s number one heavyweight, Fedor Emelianenko, and superstar Brett “The Grim” Rogers.

About STRIKEFORCE
STRIKEFORCE (www.strikeforce.com) is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its “Shamrock vs. Gracie” event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, played host to a sold-out, record crowd of 18,265. Since 1995, STRIKEFORCE has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and, after 12 years of success as a leading, world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts series with “Shamrock vs. Gracie.” In May 2008, West Coast Productions, the parent company of STRIKEFORCE, partnered with Silicon Valley

No Holds Barred: Kid Peligro on the Decade in Grappling
12-03-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-12-02T10_43_21-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our correspondent and colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), about the phenomenal growth of grappling in this first decade of this new century.

Besides being the foundation of mixed martial arts, grappling itself is now a sport contested in numerous international, national, regional, and local events. Our discussion reviewed the growth of these events, including the most prestigious of these, the ADCC Submission Fighting World Championship.

We examined where grappling is headed in the next decade, its exponential growth in this decade, how the sport is reaching a critical mass in popularity and participation, and the subsequent increase of prize money for the athletes in these events.

We also discussed the rise of newer organizations, such as FIJJA (Federation International of Jiu-Jitsu Association) (http://www.fijja.org). With headquarters in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and a head office in Abu Dhabi, FIJJA is setting up an international professional jiu-jitsu circuit. It is organizing the Abu Dhabi Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship and numerous continental and regional qualifiers for that world championship event, which is scheduled to take place April 15-17, 2010, in Abu Dhabi. Their next qualifier, the Abu Dhabi Pro World Trials - Africa, takes place this Saturday, December 5, in Kempton Park, South Africa (http://africabjjtrials.wordpress.com/).

In addition, we discussed the possibility of a grappling event being held during or alongside the 2016 Summer Olympics, which take place in Rio de Janeiro, a great world capital of grappling. And we touched on the lack of an international central body governing all of grappling, the need for the various grappling bodies to work together, and more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the colorful and outspoken Mark Pavelich, the owner and president of the mixed martial arts company, the Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) (http://www.maximumfighting.com/).

The next MFC show takes place this Friday, December 4, at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The main event features two of the most talented and technical fights in mixed martial arts, Dean Lister and Thales Leites. This card will be televised live throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico on HDNet Fights.

There are few people in the mixed martial arts who are as passionate about the sport as Mark Pavelich. That became crystal clear from the opening moments of our lengthy phone interview, conducted Tuesday afternoon, December 1.

We of course discussed with Mark Pavelich this card, called MFC 23: Unstoppable, and the main event fighters, Dean Lister and Thales Leites. But we mainly delved into his philosophy and practices as a promoter. We discussed the history of the Maximum Fighting Championship, why his business model has been so successful, his eventual plans to run MFC shows in the U.S., his attitude to other mixed martial arts companies, how MFC is primarily a family business, the critical importance of aesthetics for his product to please the fans, why he "hates" the use of a cage in mixed martial arts and uses a ring for his events, his positive attitude to the media both big and small covering his shows, and much more.

This is a landmark interview with a unique individual, so get ready for some more intelligent and important discussion, right here on No Holds Barred.
