CAGE WARS CHAMPIONSHIP - “THE NIGHTMARE BEGINS!”

10-08-2009

Denver, CO

WORLD’S FASTEST GROWING SPORTBACK IN THE KINGS HALL

CWC - Cage Wars Championship is set to return to the world famous Kings Hall with their spectacular brand of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA.) CWC-”NIGHTMARE” brings world class sports combat back to Belfast on Sunday November 29th to start their 2009/2010 season of live “Fight Nights” which will feature 6 events throughout the UK and Ireland.

Heading the season opening Fight Night will be world famous MMA star Rich “NO LOVE” Clementi who will face local MMA talent Chris “MENACE” Stringer in a three round super fight. Clementi who hails from the USA is a major challenge for Stringer and many see this fight in the style of Rocky Vs Apollo Creed. “This is a world class MMA star giving a young rising talent a chance to test himself, much like Rocky did against Apollo Creed in the now legendary Hollywood movie. Except for Chris Stringer this is real life with no second take and a chance for him to show the world just how good Northern Ireland fighters really can be” said Jonny Burrows, VP of production for Cage Wars Championship.

Despite the massive pressure of the occasion Stringer feels he can win this fight “I train just as hard as any of the top guys in the sport and I am hungry for this. This match could get me noticed on a global level and really push me forward as a future MMA champion. Rich Clementi is not a fading star or a defeated champion, he is as good as they come in MMA and he is at the top of his game, if I win this, then people will realize how much talent I have to offer the world of MMA”

Clementi said “I’ve seen Stringer fight and he is no slouch, as far as I am concerned I will treat him as if he was the world champion and prepare myself accordingly. I do not take him lightly at all because in MMA anything can happen and that is what I have to be prepared for. This is not a game for me, or a movie, so I don’t play around. He definitely has ability and I am going in there to defeat him, I expect this to be an all out war, one that I am confident I will win!”

This will be Clementi’s second visit to Ireland and to CWC “I cornered one of my guys here earlier in the year and I really liked Belfast and the MMA fans I met. It was then I decided I would like to fight here and get a chance to perform for the fans and CWC. I am really looking forward to the trip and the fight”.

CWC -”NIGHTMARE” follows the massively successful event held at the Kings Hall earlier this year and the CWC team expect to create an even better show this time. “We have been working hard on our brand of MMA and we now have our events on TV in the US reaching 20 million people every week. We have agreed a UK TV deal to air our events and we will announce the details on that very soon. MMA is the fastest growing sport on the planet and Cage Wars Championship is now seen as the premier UK and Irish MMA promotion which is growing every month. We recently agreed an exclusive deal with Everlast to be the official glove supplier to CWC and we have several other exciting deals in negotiation right now for our brand” said Jonny Burrows.

The CWC-Nightmare event is a stacked fight card showcasing some of the best MMA talent in the world today and like every CWC event it promises a fantastic night of sports combat entertainment!

The full fight card is the most exciting CWC event to be held to date and fans have an awesome event to look forward to. There will be 10 bouts on the feature card and there will be five amateur bouts on the undercard

No Holds Barred: Daniel Cormier, 1-0 in MMA
10-07-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-10-06T15_41_32-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Daniel Cormier (http://twitter.com/Cormier2009/), the two-time U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestler who was victorious in his mixed martial arts debut September 25 with a second-round TKO over Gary Frazier on a Strikeforce card in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

While fighting professionally in mixed martial arts may be new to Daniel, competing in combat sports certainly is not. We discussed how his extensive wrestling experience prepared him for this fight, both in terms of technique and also entering a cage for this fight (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTIxNzg5MDI0.html). We analyzed the fight itself, and what lessons he drew from it. We also commented on the recent World Wrestling Championships, and the overall disappointing performance by the American wrestlers at it. We learned of his desire to return to the mat for several upcoming major freestyle wrestling tournaments, while also preparing to fight again before this year is over. Among many other topics, he also told us about the coming launch of a Team Thirsty web site with Mo Lawal, Shawn Bunch, and Rashad Evans. And we concluded our lengthy interview with some comments about the upcoming Showtime super middleweight boxing tournament.

So there you have it: mixed martial arts, wrestling, and boxing, all with Daniel Cormier, and only on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis, More Boxing Self-Destruction

10-05-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-10-04T17_13_35-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing the continuing failure of the boxing establishment to provide the fans with the fights they want, and to make the videos available to them when they want and where they want. Some of the latest examples from this past weekend are the John Murray-Jon Thaxton lightweight fight in the UK, the David Tua-Shane Cameron heavyweight fight in New Zealand, and the Prizefighter heavyweight tournament in the UK won by Audley Harrison, all of which are or were available for free online, either live or on sites like YouTube. This is another hard-hitting exposition about the mess that has been dragging down boxing, especially in the U.S.

This coming Saturday, October 10, boxing returns to Madison Square Garden in New York with a card headlined by three exciting undefeated fighters. This show will be telecast on pay-per-view in the U.S.

WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs) of Puerto Rico fights Rogers Mtagwa (26-12-2, 18 KOs) of Tanzania and Philadelphia, who won a 2008 Fight of the Year candidate against Tomas Villas with a 10th-round TKO.

WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (15-0, 13 KOs), originally from Cuba and now fighting out of Miami, and a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, takes on veteran Whyber Garcia (22-6, 15 KOs) from Panama.

Heavyweight prospect Odlanier Solis (14-0, 10 KOs), also originally from Cuba and now fighting out of Miami, and also a 2004 Olympic gold medalist, takes on former title challenger Fres Oquendo (31-5, 20 KOs).

We spoke with these three fighters, Juan Manuel Lopez, Yuriorkis Gamboa, and Odlanier Solis, at the kickoff news conference for this show at Madison Square Garden about their upcoming fights, their careers, and much more.

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews the 2009 ADCC Submission Fighting World Championships (http://adccbarcelona.com), which took place September 26-27 in Barcelona, Spain, with our colleague Kid Peligro, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, a senior editor of the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), and a correspondent on our show. The ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) tournament is an invitation-only event which takes place every two years to determine the best no-gi grapplers in the world.

We discuss the performance of the many stars who competed in this event, including Braulio Estima, who won both the Absolute and under 88kg divisions, and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, who decisioned Robert Drysdale in the Superfight. We evaluate the significance of this event, which Kid said is "getting bigger and bigger," why its future is "bright," the growing role of the ADCC Regionals in North America which are qualifiers for the 2011 ADCC tournament, the problem of athletes training for both grappling and mixed martial arts at the same time, and much more.

Tim Kennedy Chokes Out Zak Cummings; Two-Time Olympian Daniel Cormier Makes Successful MMA Debut, Woodley, Longacre, and Sefo all winners on SHOWTIME®
in Tulsa, Oklahoma

NEW YORK (September 26, 2009) – United States Army veteran and rising middleweight mixed martial arts (MMA) star Tim Kennedy (11-2) dominated a previously unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-1), submitting Cummings with a north-south choke in the second round (2:43) of their STRIKEFORCE Challengers main event battle live on SHOWTIME from Tulsa, Oklahoma’s SpiritBank Event Center on Friday, September 25.

In his highly-anticipated MMA debut, two-time U.S. Olympic wrestling team member Daniel Cormier (1-0) displayed signs of a bright future in the sport, stopping Gary Frazier (0-1) with a ground and pound offensive in the second round (3:39) of battle.

Kennedy, a 29-year-old former sniper for the Seventh Special Forces who recently accepted a position with The Texas National Guard in order to be able to pursue his MMA career more thoroughly, rocked the 25-year-old Cummings early in the first round after the two engaged on their feet.

Kennedy secured a takedown and began to unload with punches from half guard. Cummings rolled out and mounted Kennedy, but Kennedy quickly escaped and went on the offensive again with non-stop punches and regained the mount.

After surviving the first round, Cummings attempted a takedown early in the second stanza, but was caught with a left hand before escaping an attempted standing guillotine choke.

While trying to flee Kennedy’s clutches, Cummings fell to the canvas into a choke hold. Kennedy transitioned to a north-south choke hold and Cummings tapped out.

The 30-year-old Cormier, the 2001 NCAA national wrestling championship tournament runner-up for Oklahoma State University, stalked Frazier (0-1) from the outset of the card’s first live SHOWTIME televised bout. Frazier, a 21-year-old native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, attempted to run, but Cormier caught up and, in the second round, worked his way to the mount position after slamming Frazier to the canvas.

Cormier hammered Frazier with punches from the mount, prompting Frazier to give up his back. Cormier continued to batter Frazier from top position until the referee stopped the fight due to Frazier’s inability to defend himself any longer.

Another former NCAA Division I wrestling star and one of MMA’s most promising young prospects, 27-year-old Tyron “T-Wood” Woodley (4-0) of St. Louis, Missouri extended his perfect record, submitting Huntington Beach, California’s Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw” Light (6-9) with an arm bar in the second round (3:38) of action.

Woodley asserted himself with his superior athletic ability in the first round, scooping up Light and slamming him to the canvas. Woodley was able to mount Light twice in the round, but Light defended well, not allowing Woodley to create too much space between the fighters.

Woodley scored another slam in the second round and transitioned to an arm bar from which Light tapped out.

Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-8) utilized his MMA experience to take down six-time world kickboxing champion and K-1 legend Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (2-0) in the first round of a heavyweight bout. Jordan mounted and rained down on Sefo, still a newcomer to MMA, with punches.

In danger, Sefo repeatedly popped his hips up in an effort to throw Jordan from the mount. Although Sefo was unsuccessful at changing position, he survived the round.

Jordan shot for a takedown after the fighters squared off at the beginning of the second round. On the way in, however, he dropped to the canvas in pain and verbally submitted at the 24 second mark of the round. Jordan is being examined for a possible torn quadriceps of the right knee.

Local rivals and world class kickboxers Thomas Longacre (5-0) and Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-1) put on a fireworks show full of rapid exchanges of punches and round kicks on their feet.

Longacre dominated the matchup from punching range early in the first round before Calanoc briefly turned the tides with his own boxing skills.

In the second stanza, Longacre took over with repeated flurries. He continued to find his mark in the third round. After the fight went to the mat, Calanoc maneuvered impressively from his back and attempted an arm bar in the third round, but Longacre escaped and brought the fight back to stand up mode.

In the final 10 seconds of the bout, Longacre and Calanoc swung away at each other relentlessly until the bell sounded.

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

Friday's fights will re-air on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME 2. The telecast will also be available On Demand beginning Monday, Sept. 28, and running through Oct. 25.

No Holds Barred: Vitali Klitschko-Chris Arreola Preview with John Perretti, Larry Merchant
9-25-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-24T19_47_22-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman and our senior correspondent John Perretti (http://www.facebook.com/johnperretti) preview the WBC heavyweight title fight between champion Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) and challenger Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs). This fight takes place this Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will be telecast in the U.S. on HBO.

We open with an interview John conducted with HBO commentator Larry Merchant about this fight. Then Eddie and John have an in-depth discussion about it, as John critiques what he calls "antiquated" training methods used in particular by the Klitschko camp. We both evaluate these two fighters, and explain the difficulties Arreola faces in winning the belt from Klitschko. But we also discuss what Arreola must do, even if he loses, to preserve his career.

We next hear interviews conducted by John with unbeaten super featherweight John Molina (17-0, 13 KOs), who fights veteran Efren Hinojosa (30-6-1, 17 KOs) on this undercard, and 2008 U.S. Olympian super middleweight Shawn Estrada (6-0, 6 KOs), who also is on this undercard. And we hear heavyweight prospect Manny Quezada (28-4, 18 KOs), a late bloomer who knocked out prospect Travis Walker (31-3-1, 25 KOs) in the first round in July.

STRIKEFORCE AND SHOWTIME SPORTS - To Deliver MMA To American Forces Network

9-24-2009

Denver, CO

Deal Offers All Remaining 2009 STRIKEFORCE Events Including CBS Broadcast of “Fedor vs. Rogers” To American Troops Serving Abroad

First Up: American Military Hero Tim Kennedy Takes On Undefeated Zak Cummings

STRIKEFORCE Challengers, Friday, Sept. 25, Live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Sept. 24, 2009)–Premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promoter STRIKEFORCE and SHOWTIME Sports, have teamed up with the American Forces Network to deliver live MMA events to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces serving overseas via AFN, the worldwide television broadcast network. The deal calls for all STRIKEFORCE events for the remainder of 2009 to be distributed on AFN including the Nov. 7 M-1 Global co-promotion of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers, airing live on CBS Television Network.

The debut offering—this Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers event on SHOWTIME—features American military hero Tim Kennedy, the 29-year-old Special Forces soldier who has served tours of duty in Middle East, versus undefeated middleweight Zak Cummings in the main event from Tulsa, Okla.

"We are proud to be able to bring live Strikeforce events to the men and women of The United States Armed Forces,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. “These are people that have dedicated their lives to protecting our country so it’s great to be able to give something back to them. And the timing couldn’t be better. Having Army Ranger Tim Kennedy headline a terrific Challengers event is the perfect start.”

"Special thanks to Scott Coker for providing the AFN Broadcast Center with the approval,” says AFN's Executive Director, Jeffrey White. "Without his initiative and clear understanding of our worldwide military broadcasting mission, delivery of Strikeforce to our well-deserving audience overseas would not be possible."

The U.S. Department of Defense operates the American Forces Network which is carried on bases in 175 countries and aboard 140 U.S. Navy ships at sea around the world reaching nearly one million American service men and women.

“We are delighted to add Strikeforce mixed martial arts programs to our AFN schedule," said Corey Slutsky, Sports Director at the American Forces Network. “We provide a touch of home to U.S. military service members and their families deployed around the world and we salute the Strikeforce team for their support of the troops."

An elated Kennedy said: “This is freaking fantastic news. Right now, the Special Forces group that I recently left are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every single friend of mine is over there and I was planning on emailing every one of them the results of my fight right after it finished on Friday, but instead they get to watch it. I’ll be emailing everyone tonight and telling them and letting them know.”

Kennedy spoke to the popularity of MMA amongst his fellow soldiers, “It attracts the same kind of people: Intense, excited, aggressive, athletic type people. Also, the skills that guys use in MMA are skills that guys use to stay alive in combat. Boxing, wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, that’s stuff that soldiers use to survive. Some of the Special Forces guys train in that stuff everyday. And for them to get to watch some of the guys that are the best in the world at it is exciting.”

Kennedy, (10-2) recently accepted an offer to serve in the Texas National Guard after spending six years in The United States Army, the last three as a sniper in the Seventh Special Forces Group.

He feels no pressure whatsoever being the main event Friday. “If I’m not getting blown up or getting shot at then it only means it’s going to be fun for me,” he said. “This is not life threatening. This is me going out and doing something that I enjoy and I enjoy fighting.”

In his last start, on June 19 at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash., on Strikeforce Challengers, Kennedy dominated Nick “The Goat” Thompson, stopping him on the ground with an onslaught of punches in the second round (2:37).

“After 9/11 happened, I wanted to do something for my country,” he explained. Kennedy’s new job will allow him to remain in the armed services while maintaining enough flexibility to take his MMA career to the next level.

“The military is my life,” said Kennedy. “I am going to serve as long as they’ll let me. I’d love to retire in uniform.”

No Holds Barred: John Perretti, Mayweather-Marquez and Belfort-Franklin Reviews, and Decline of American Civilization
9-21-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-20T19_18_24-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman reviews with our senior correspondent, John Perretti (http://www.facebook.com/johnperretti), the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez and Vitor Belfort-Rich Franklin fights from this past Saturday, September 19, and what they both say about boxing and mixed martial arts.

We both praise the tremendous skills which Mayweather demonstrated in his return to the ring after a break of almost two years. But we also lambast HBO for turning the postfight interview with him into a train wreck which not only disrespected this world-class talent, but also resembled something lifted from a script commonly used in the trash heap known as pro "wrestling".

We then tie in this crude, imitative stunt to a general decades-long decline in American culture and civilization, including music, placing what happens in the combat sports as part of larger social, cultural, and political trends.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Mayweather-Marquez, Klitschko-Arreola, Offensive Promoters, and More
9-19-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-18T15_48_42-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again discusses boxing and mixed martial arts with the legendary former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, promoter, announcer, and martial artist, and our senior correspondent on this show, John Perretti (http://www.facebook.com/johnperretti).

We opened with a preview of the September 19 Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez fight. We worked in a preview of the September 26 heavyweight fight between WBC champ Vitali Klitschko and Chris Arreola. We commented on the latest series of bigoted, offensive, ignorant, and intentionally provocative remarks by promoters Bob Arum and Dana White. We explained how promoters in both boxing and mixed martial arts regularly utilize racism, nationalism, and homophobia to promote their events and make money for themselves. We discussed the issue of Juan Manual Marquez drinking his own urine, and how the Mayweather-Marquez fight has been built. We noted how what is happening in the combat sports is reflective of the overall decline of American civilization, and much more.

No one else will interweave such seasoned analyses of all these combat sports with these types of societal commentaries, so all thinking fight fans and combat sports aficionados will find it worthwhile to listen to our discussion and send in comments.

UFC 103 Packs a Ton of Punch
9-18-2009
Denver, CO

By Jason Reynolds

Previewing one fantastic fight card

On Saturday, September 19th, mixed martial arts fans in Dallas, Texas will be treated to what could be the best fight card of the year, when UFC 103 heads to the American Airlines Arena. The card is stacked with recognizable fighters, and will be headlined by a 195 pound catch-weight super fight pitting superstar Rich "Ace" Franklin against former UFC champion Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort. Even with no title on the line, UFC 103 should be one of the best fight cards of the year.

Now for the fighters:

Belfort will be making his long-awaited return to the Octagon following his recent successful stint with Affliction, which saw him annihilate both Matt Lindland and Terry Martin with powerful strikes. (From 1997-2005, "The Phenom" bounced back and forth between Pride and the UFC, finding success in both organizations.) Primarily known for his boxing technique and ferocious style, he'll enter this fight having won his last four bouts.

His fighting career was only recently considered by many in the MMA community to be nearing its end, but if his recent showings are any indication though, he may be making one final push towards a UFC middleweight title. Now Rich Franklin was in a similar position not too long ago, when after losing a second fight against Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title, he was forced to move up in weight or forever be relegated to division gatekeeper.

Since his move to the 205-pound division, "Ace" has looked like a revitalized fighter. He defeated Matt Hamill and Wanderlei Silva, while only losing a controversial decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 93. With a 25-4 professional record, Franklin has shown that he belongs among the UFC elite at any weight. A win against Belfort will put him in title contention for the UFC light heavyweight belt. Since both fighters love to stand in the pocket and strike, this fight could ultimately end up being a nominee for fight of the year.

Also on the card will be a heavyweight match between two of MMA's most dynamic fighters when Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic tangles with Brazilian kick-boxer Junior "Cigano" dos Santos. "Cro Cop" once ruled Pride's heavyweight division, where he established himself as one of the greatest MMA athletes in the world. His ability to finish fights with one punch or one kick makes him almost unbeatable on the feet, where 19 of his 25 career wins have come by knockout. Throughout his career he has taken on some of the best fighters in the sport, and he recently signed a three-fight deal with the UFC to make one last heavyweight title run. To do that, however, he will have to get past dos Santos – something that will be no small feat.

"Cigano" enters this match following devastating first round TKO's of Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve in his first two UFC contests. He is considered a younger version of his UFC 103 foe because of his ability to stand and strike. This fight could end quickly, with the winner getting in line for the next heavyweight title shot.

The number one contender spot in the welterweight division was supposed to be decided at UFC 103 with Mike "Quick" Swick taking on Dutch striker Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann – that was until Swick suffered a concussion resulting from a fall during training. Stepping up on short notice to fill in for Swick will be Paul "Semtex" Daley, an English striker who will also be making his UFC debut. "Semtex" enters this bout with a 21-8 career record, and 16 of his wins have come by knockout.

Following a loss at middleweight to Nate Marquardt at UFC 88, Martin Kampmann opted for a drop in weight to challenge for the welterweight title. His recent hard fought split decision win against veteran fighter Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night 18 shows that he may have made the right decision. With the winner possibly getting the next shot at pound-for-pound king Georges "Rush" St. Pierre, expect both fighters to come out guns-blazing. In another pivotal welterweight match, 'The Ultimate Fighter' alum Josh "Kos" Koscheck will lock horns with veteran MMA star Frank "Twinkle Toes" Trigg. Koscheck is an elite wrestler that has gone 10-4 inside the Octagon. He is coming off of a devastating first round knockout loss to Paulo Thiago at UFC 95, and is badly in need of a win to remain part of the division's elite. In Trigg, he gets a fellow experienced wrestler with a well-rounded game.

Frank Trigg has fought around the world for many different organizations. He owns a 19-6 career record while competing against some of the best welterweights in the world. "Twinkle Toes" recently signed a four fight deal with the UFC to make one final run at the title that he has long desired.

No Holds Barred: Freddie Roach on Pacquiao-Cotto, Paul Johnson on Boxers Organizing Committee
9-16-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-15T18_27_04-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by discussing why upcoming fights like Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Juan Manuel Marquez, Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto, and the Showtime super middleweight tournament certainly do feature worthy matchups, they still are far from enough for boxing to shed its designation as the "red light district of sports". With highly controversial decisions happening seemingly every week, such as in the August 22 Paulie Malignaggi-Juan Diaz fight in Texas and the John McDermott-Tyson Fury fight in England September 13, perhaps that designation should be modernized so that boxing would become known as the "spam of sports".

There is some movement, however, to attempt to reverse the decline of boxing, particularly in the U.S. While what role in all this the newly-formed Boxing Promoters Association will play remains to be seen, their second meeting, held September 14 in New York, did mark a step forward in at least one respect. A special presentation was made by Paul Johnson, head of the Boxers Organizing Committee, which has been seeking to form a union for boxers for several years. He stated that such a union and the establishment of collective bargaining in boxing would not only provide much-needed security, insurance, etc., for the fighters, but would also help build the credibility of the sport, and thus improve its marketability.

Right after that meeting, we spoke with Paul Johnson about what the goals of the Boxers Organizing Committee are, how his presentation was received by the boxing promoters he addressed, what the election of Rich Trumka as president of the AFL-CIO at their convention this week might mean for boxers, what the fans can do to assist this process, and more.

At the news conference last Thursday, September 10, at Yankee Stadium for the November14 Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight in Las Vegas, we joined several members of the media is speaking with Freddie Roach, who trains Pacquiao. STRIKEFORCE: Undefeated Billy Evangelista Takes On Jorge Gurgel
9-14-2009, Denver, CO
Event date: November 6, 2009, Five-Fight Telecast Live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT
Venue: Save Mart Center, Fresno, California

NEW YORK (September 11, 2009)—Undefeated lightweight (155-pound. limit) sensation Billy Evangelista (9-0) will square off with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel (13-5) in the main event when the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers mixed martial arts (MMA) series returns to Save Mart Center in Fresno, California on Friday, November 6.

Former Fresno State University wrestling star and Fresno native Casey “The Underdog” Olson (11-3) will return to action in the cage in a lightweight (155 pounds) matchup against an opponent that has yet to be determined.

A special pre-sale ticket purchase opportunity will take place for “Strikeforce Insider” e-newsletter subscribers (www.strikeforce.com/signup.asp) beginning at 10 a.m. PT on Wednesday, September 16 and ending at midnight on Sunday, September 20. The special pre-sale passcode will be sent out to all subscribers on Monday, September 14.

In addition, all fans who purchase tickets during the pre-sale period and the first week of the public on-sale (9/16 – 9/27) will receive a 17” x 23” limited edition STRIKEFORCE collector’s poster that holds a $20 value.

Tickets for the Strikeforce Challengers event officially go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. PT on Monday, September 21 at the Save Mart Center box office and select Save Mart Supermarkets as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com) and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

The live SHOWTIME telecast, which will include as many as five bouts, will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

Evangelista, a seasoned 28 year old Muay Thai striking machine who fights out of Fresno, will make his first appearance in the cage since he faced off with road warrior “Iron” Mike Aina in the main event of the inaugural STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event at SaveMart Center on May 15, 2009.

The anticipated meeting between the two lightweights came to an anti-climactic end after Evangelista struck his opponent with a knee to the head while Aina was on one knee (striking a downed opponent to the head is illegal.) The bout was originally declared a disqualification in favor of Aina but, after an appeal was made by the Evangelista camp, the ruling was changed to a “no decision.”

Since making his STRIKEFORCE debut during the first-ever MMA event at the world famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California where he earned a split judges’ decision over Clint Coronel on September 29, 2007, Evangelista has enjoyed continued success with the promotion over the course of three additional bouts.

On October 3, 2008, Evangelista made his greatest stand to date against Luke “Lil’ Hulk” Caudillo at STRIKEFORCE: Payback held at Broomfield, Colorado’s Broomfield Event Center. After being dropped twice with punches in the first round, a determined Evangelista dug deep and battled back in the following two rounds to earn a unanimous decision.

While Evangelista’s last effort may have ended prematurely, Gurgel’s last start, a matchup with rising star Conor “Hurricane” Heun on the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers card at Kent, Washington’s ShoWare Center on June 19, 2009, was a classic barnburner. After three rounds of non-stop, toe-to-toe exchanges, Gurgel emerged the winner by way of unanimous decision.

His victory over Heun marked the 32-year-old Gurgel’s debut under the STRIKEFORCE banner. A member  of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter” season two cast whose relentless fighting style helped him earn two “Fight Of The Night” honors with UFC, Gurgel parted ways with the promotion late last year.

Gurgel, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Marcus Aurelio and a six-time Brazilian state champion in the grappling sport, has claimed 9 of his 13 victories by way of submission. Still, he has shown his penchant for striking, bringing fans to their feet repeatedly with his explosive Muay Thai combinations.

A native of Fortaleza, Brazil, Gurgel entered The United States as an exchange student during high school and later became a citizen here. He withdrew from his college studies just one semester shy of graduation
to pursue a career as an MMA fighter and trainer. Recently, he opened a gym in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Olson, whose Fresno State University wrestling achievements include qualifying for the NCAA Division I national tournament and capturing the Northern California Regional Championship, is looking to rebound from a first round submission (guillotine choke) he suffered in his last start at the hands of Eddie Yagin on May 8, 2009.

His start on the card will be the second of Olson’s career in STRIKEFORCE. During the promotion’s first event at SaveMart Center on October 7, 2006, Olson submitted Bobby Sanchez in the first round (1:58) of their matchup.

SaveMart Center doors will open for the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event at 5:15 p.m. PT. The first live, non-televised, preliminary bout will begin at 6 p.m.

Strikeforce Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

No Holds Barred: Robert Drysdale on ADCC Superfight with Jacare
9-13-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-12T11_38_27-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling world champion, Robert Drysdale (http://robertdrysdale.net/).

The winner by submission of all his fights in the absolute division of the 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Fighting World Championships, Robert Drysdale now has earned a place in the featured Superfight in ADCC 2009 (http://adccbarcelona.com), September 25-27, in Barcelona, Spain. His original opponent, however, Roger Gracie, the 2007 Superfight winner and a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion many times over, was forced to withdraw from this match because of an injury.

It was just announced Friday by the ADCC Committee that the new opponent for Robert Drysdale in the Superfight will be the exciting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and mixed martial arts star, Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. In his last appearance at ADCC, in 2005, Jacare won the 88 kg division but lost in the absolute finals to Roger Gracie.

We spoke with Robert Drysdale by phone about all this Friday evening. In this interview, we discussed the late change of opponent, how this affects his preparations for the Superfight, and what we can expect in this match with Jacare. He explained his ideas about the need for grappling to be entertaining, as well as better popularized. He also talked about his desire to fight regularly in mixed martial arts, as well as a recently publicized disagreement he had with mixed martial arts star Anderson Silva. We also covered many more topics, so stay tuned for a spirited and enlightening discussion.

Headlined by five-time UFC veteran and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Roan “Jucao” Carneiro versus UFC and Pride veteran Jorge “Macaco” Patino, this fight is the definition of beef. With a pre-existing rivalry already in the air this bout will be a war for bragging rights in Brazil spilled into the bosom of Miami.

With the remaining bouts including: Ryan Healy, Luiz Firmino, Falvio Alravo, Jean Silva, Carlo Prater, Milton Veria, Junior Assuncao, Jadson Costa, Micah Miller, Vennesa Porto, Ingene Gomez, and Hertbert Goodman, this will be one this the most stacked cards of world-class athletes to ever hit Miami.

American Top Team is one of the largest and most active Mixed Martial Arts (“MMA”) teams in the world. The team has over 1,000 members, more than fifty of whom compete professionally in MMA, Western Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Grappling, Wrestling, and Muay Thai events all over the world. American Top Team has rapidly developed a reputation of success and has consistently produced many MMA and BJJ champions on an individual and team basis. Named the best place to train in MMA in the state of Florida and recognized as a champion making team by UFC President Dana White, American Top Team is the premier source for quality MMA athletes in Florida. By placing the majority of the card with American Top Team fighters, this card truly pays homage to Floridians filled with hometown pride.

Roan “Jucao” Carneiro was one of the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s rising stars when he entered the promotion in April 2007 against Rich Clementi at UFC Fight Night 9. That bout resulted in a hard fought unanimous decision victory that showcased his hardnosed style. A loss to Jon Fitch two months later was then redeemed by a win over B.J. Penn protégé, Tony DeSousa and then back-to back losses to Kevin Burns and Ryo Chonan. The last loss sent Carneiro out of the UFC and his first return to the cage is now within Shine Fight Promotions. Having battled some of the best fighters in the world, Carneiro is ready to get back on the road to redemption.

Jorge “Macaco” Patino defines the word MMA veteran battling professionally since 1995. From the inception of MMA, Patino has been in the mix battling within the vale tudo (anything goes) circuit in Brazil. From the outset, Patino began his career with nine straight wins with six of the nine captured in the first round. Making his debut outside of Brazil in the UFC, Patino fought Pat Miletich for the Lightweight Championship at UFC 18. What ensued was a whirlwind tour that took Patino to Japan and all over the continental U.S. where he maintained his reputation as an elite fighter.

No Holds Barred: Jacqui Snow on Internet Video and Combat Sports
09-10-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-09T20_45_59-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jacqui Snow, our correspondent and the technical consultant for No Holds Barred. She is also a moderator of the very popular MySpace Boxing Forum (http://groups.myspace.com/boxing).

With a glut of major and minor boxing and mixed martial arts pay-per-views on television, a continuing worldwide economic crisis, and the explosive growth of technology like Internet video and audio, the issue of how people watch combat sports events is still being debated. The boxing business in particular has tried to resist the inexorable march of technology. More and more people are watching these sports online, whether on legal sites, unauthorized videos on sites like YouTube, or on a mushrooming collection of so-called "pirate" sites.

In our discussion, we explain the necessity for these sports to change their business models to conform to these new technologies. They must, as Jacqui Snow insisted, "Adapt or die." We also discuss the issue of piracy, both by legal business like the shrinking group of boxing promoters and television networks which try to line their pockets with expensive pay-per-views which only enrich a handful of people, and by those sites on which live streams or videos of fights appear in violation of copyright laws.

And we name names, discussing the key sites, both legal and otherwise, involved in live streaming video, including SopCast, DeliCast, WWITV, TVU, Livestation, and KeyHoleTV, as well as the forums which link to these sites such as the MyP2P and AllP2P forums.

This is the kind of information which most of the combat sports media either shies away from delivering or wants to keep concealed. But you will hear the truth and the whole truth, right here on No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: Renzo Gracie, Scott Coker, Vadim Finkelchtein, Joost Raimond on Fedor, M-1 and Strikeforce
9-04-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-09-03T05_15_41-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman continues our series of shows on the co-promotional alliance between mixed martial arts companies Strikeforce and M-1 Global, and why this is a positive development for this sport and business.

Last week, at a news conference in New York featuring top heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter Fedor Emelianenko, we once again spoke with Scott Coker, CEO of Strikeforce (http://www.strikeforce.com/), about the upcoming fight between Fedor and the unbeaten Brett Rogers, and what the plans of Strikeforce are.

At that same event, we spoke with two key executives from M-1 Global (http://www.m-1global.com/), Vadim Finkelchtein, the M-1 Global president, and Joost Raimond, the M-1 Global operations manager. In quite direct terms, they explained the pyramid structure M-1 Global uses to recruit new fighters and then have the best advance to the top, how and why M-1 Global reached an agreement with Strikeforce to co-promote shows, why the negotiations for a similar agreement with UFC failed, and much more.

XYIENCE and Circle K Stores Launch Harley-Davidson Giveaway in AZ, CO, and NV
9-02-2009

Denver, CO

LAS VEGAS – XYIENCE and Circle K stores have teamed up to offer shoppers in Arizona, Colorado and Nevada a chance to take home a new Harley-Davidson. The promotion kicks off on September 14 and runs through October 11 at more than 700 participating Circle K locations. Shoppers can pick up entry forms in the stores on Xenergy Premium case stackers. There is no purchase necessary; Xenergy Premium’s four flavors—Cherry Lime, Cran Razz, Blu Pom and Mango Guava—will be available for $1.99 per can during the promotion. The winner will be selected at random and will be notified by XYIENCE in early October.

XYIENCE recently wrapped up a similar Harley-Davidson giveaway promotion with Kum & Go stores, where sales of Xenergy quadrupled during the promotional period. According to Richard Ginther, Kum & Go’s category manager for package beverages, the increase in sales far exceeded projections. “The success was due in part to the simplicity of the contest, but more so from the fact that when our customers discovered that Xenergy is a great-tasting, sugar-free energy drink, store managers saw a tremendous number of repeat sales.”

XYIENCE anticipates the same success with Circle K, as XYIENCE CEO and president Csaba Reider explains that both XYIENCE and Harley-Davidson are sponsors of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), which has a large following in the states participating in the Circle K promotion.

“We’re dealing with a region that’s home to a large population of UFC fans, and they are very brand-loyal. The UFC and many of its fighters are based in Las Vegas. The organization established its roots in Colorado with UFC 1 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver in November 1993,” says Reider. “By providing those fans with a unique shopping experience, we feel we will create a greater connection for the consumer to both the XYIENCE and Circle K brands.”

“Circle K strives to be the most convenient place to shop because that enhances our customers’ lifestyle. So while our goal is to provide a fast and seamless shopping experience, we also work to make that experience memorable. XYIENCE is providing an opportunity for the Arizona region Circle K to address many of our shoppers’ passion by incorporating two important lifestyle brands –XYIENCE and Harley-Davidson, into a fun promotion,” says Heather Heller, Circle K business manager in the package beverages, beer, and liquor division. “We look forward to tremendous success in the weeks ahead.”

CARSON'S CORNER -  Strikeforce's Scott Coker
8-31-2009
Denver, CO

On this episode of Carson's Corner, Strikeforce head honcho Scott Coker joins Bob to discuss the California company's endeavors to date.

Coker gives his thoughts on everything from recent comments by Dana White to his plans for the future; although this interview was recorded mere moments before the announcement of the Emelianenko vs. Rogers matchup, Scott claimed not to have settled on a definite first fight for Fedor.

Did Scott Coker tempt fate by trying to bluff his way through a Q&A with MMA analyst and seasoned riverboat gambler Bob Carson, or did he simply make his mind up about the fight seconds after the interview ended and hastily arrange a press conference to let people know? Tune in and decide for yourself!

In addition to the interview Bob tackles the latest news and rumors from around the MMA world, including reports that Quinton Jackson will star in the new "A-Team" movie, the shooting death of boxer Vernon Forrest and some listener e-mail about the state of the UK scene.

8-29-2009
Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-08-29T00_16_32-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the freestyle and collegiate wrestling champion, and undefeated mixed martial arts fighter, "King" Mo Lawal (http://twitter.com/KingMO_GDP).

Mo made his American fighting debut Friday night, August 28, with a 25-second TKO victory over the veteran Mark Kerr on the M-1 Global: Breakthrough card at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas.

Shortly after his victory, we reached Mo by phone. He discussed this fight, his strategy, the technique he utilized, the level of wrestling on which he has competed, and how he is still a free agent with no set plans. And, of course, he also asked about the results of the ESPN2 boxing card which was going on the same time as his fight, and we obliged him on that. So listen up to the hottest free agent in mixed martial arts, right here on No Holds Barred.

WEC HEADS TO THE LONE STAR STATE ON OCT. 10
8-29-2009

Denver, CO

WEC® PRESENTS: CERRONE VS. HENDERSON

From The AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX - Saturday, Oct. 10;

Tickets Go On Sale Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. CT

Fight to Air Live on VERSUS at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – World Extreme Cagefighting® announced today that it is returning to the Lone Star state on Saturday, Oct. 10 with an action-packed night of fights. Live from the AT&T Center in beautiful San Antonio, TX, fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone battles feared striker Ben Henderson in a bout that will crown the interim WEC lightweight champion.

The 10-fight card, which was originally slated for Sept. 2, now heads to one of the nation’s top cities. What’s more, the Oct. 10 event will be WEC’s first-ever show on a Saturday night, making it a historic night for the organization.

“We are really excited to be bringing this fight card to San Antonio,” WEC General Manager Reed Harris said, adding that the market has long been attractive to WEC. “They say everything’s bigger in Texas. We plan on living up to that slogan by bringing some of the most prominent mixed martial artists in the world to San Antonio.

“The stars have aligned for this card,” Harris continued. “As we stated earlier this week, an injury to Henderson prevented him from being ready to fight on Sept. 2, but he’s fired up and ready for ‘Cowboy’ on Oct. 10. It’s the perfect scenario. We’ve got a world title fight on a Saturday night in one of the nation’s biggest cities. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Tickets for Cerrone vs. Henderson go on sale Friday, Sept. 4 at 10 a.m. CT and will be priced at $25, $45, $75, and $125. A special Internet ticket pre-sale will be available to WEC newsletter subscribers on Thursday, Sept. 3 starting at 10 a.m. CT. To access this presale, users must register for the WEC newsletter through wec.tv. Tickets will be available at the AT&T Center Box Office, online at ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or charge by phone at 1-800-745-3000. Tickets also are available online through www.wec.tv.

Cerrone vs. Henderson will be televised nationally live on VERSUS beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. All of the network’s live WEC events are presented in HD and Spanish language SAP where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus.

With lightweight champion Jamie Varner unable to defend the title due to injury, top contenders Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson are set to collide in what could be of the most intense championship bouts of the year.

A former professional bull rider, Cerrone (10-1, 1 NC) hopes to lasso his first world title when he meets Henderson in San Antonio. A phenomenal Muay Thai striker, the 26-year-old Albuquerque, NM resident also boasts a potent ground game. With nine of his 10 wins coming by way of submission – including his last victory via rear naked choke over James Krause on June 7 - the Greg Jackson-trained Cerrone is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous fighters in the lightweight division. With a unique blend of striking and submissions, “Cowboy” firmly believes that his versatility will guide him toward the WEC championship.

“He’s got an awesome ground game and he’s a superior wrestler,” Cerrone said of Henderson. “The only thing he lacks is his standup. I believe that I have what it takes to become champion. I know Ben well and like him, but when the cage door closes, I want to win that belt.”

A technically-sound grappler, Henderson (9-1) has lived up to his nickname “Smooth” since debuting in the WEC in January. Fighting out of Glendale, AZ, the former two-time NAIA collegiate wrestling All-American has scored WEC wins over Shane Roller and Anthony Njokuani and is unbeaten since 2006. Thanks to his wrestling prowess and black belt in Taekwondo, Henderson has the ability to finish fights both on the feet and the ground. With a complete arsenal at his disposal, the 25-year-old believes he will out-duel “Cowboy” in their October showdown.

“There are guys who get in the cage and you can see in their eyes that they’re a little bit overwhelmed by the whole thing,” Henderson said. “I don’t think I’ll be overwhelmed. I love Cerrone’s game and his ‘Terminator’ style. He just keeps coming forward. As far as standing up with him and trading some blows, I’d love to. Let’s go out there and have fun.”

From Gladiator Challenge:

Gladiator Challenge (GC), one of the longest-running MMA promotions in existence, proudly presents “RETALIATE” on Saturday, August 29, live from the Wendover Nugget Casino in Wendover, Nevada. The main event will feature Jake "The Snake" Paul, defending his GC Welterweight World Title Belt against Lee Doss in an exciting rematch. Also showcased will be former UFC fighter Andy Wang. With its main card anchored by the United States debut of former NCAA champion "King" Mo Lawal and former NCAA All-American Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr, the undercard will be headlined by 8-1 Spanish heavyweight sensation Rogent Lloret taking on the latest addition to the M-1 Global roster, Russian heavyweight Alexey Oleinik.

Also featured on the undercard will be a dynamic lightweight matchup between Eric Marriott (13-1, fighting out of Lees Summit, Missouri) and Tim Bazer (9-6, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska). Training out of Team Grindhouse, rumors have been circulating that the gifted Marriott is currently being scouted by World Extreme Cagefighting and Strikeforce. As such, Marriott's fight vs. Bazer this Friday could be his last in the Kansas City region for quite some time.

Also scheduled for the undercard is an intriguing lightweight matchup between veteran Sean "P-Town" Wilson (18-9, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska) and multi-time Army Combatives champion Josh Orocho (11-6, fighting out of Manhattan, Kansas).

Additionally, welterweight Rudy Bears (9-3, fighting out of Kansas City, Missouri) will look to test himself versus nine-year veteran Brendan Seguin (18-5, fighting out of Detroit, Michigan). Seguin, coming off a recent first round TKO victory over former UFC veteran Ryan Madigan, has his sights on ending Bears' five-fight win streak in front of Bears' friends and family.

Opening the card will be a special female attraction contested at 150 lbs. featuring the professional MMA debut of 2007 WKA Amateur Muay Thai Champion and multi-time Grappler's Quest winner Andria Caplan vs. rising Kansas City fight prospect Mollie Ahlers-Estes (1-0).

Tickets to the event are still available at all local Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com. The complete finalized card is listed below:

12. Heavyweight (3x5): Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (4-0) vs. Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr (15-10)
11. Special Sparring Exhibition: "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko vs. "The Dreamcatcher" Gegard Mousasi

6. Lightweight (3x5): Daisuke Nakamura (19-10) vs. Ferrid "The Hurricane" Kheder (14-3)
5. Heavyweight (3x5): Rogent Lloret (7-1) vs. Alexey Oleinik (24-4)

3. Lightweight (3x5): Sean "P-Town" Wilson (18-9) vs. Josh Orocho (11-6)
2. Welterweight (3x5): Rudy Bears (9-3) vs. Brendan Seguin (18-15-1)
1. Female 150 lbs. (3x3): Andria Caplan (DEBUT) vs. Mollie Ahlers-Estes (1-0)

In addition to Lawal vs. Kerr, "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH" will also feature a special sparring exhibition between "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi. Additionally, number one Sherdog.com European MMA prospect Karl "Psycho" Amoussou will fight on live TV in the U.S. for the first time as he looks to end the Cinderella comeback of John "The Iron Bull" Doyle.

HDNET's telecast will begin on Friday, Aug. 28 at 10:00 p.m. ET with the local undercard at the Historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City beginning at 7 p.m. CT. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com and all local Ticketmaster outlets.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on Cyborg-Carano, Fighter Safety in MMA, and More

8-20-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-08-19T16_07_45-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again speaks with the legendary former UFC and Extreme Fighting matchmaker, promoter, announcer, and martial artist, and our senior correspondent on this show, John Perretti (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1495617913).

In a landmark discussion, a critical look at the level of technique in the Cris "Cyborg" Santos-Gina Carano mixed martial arts fight on the August 15 Strikeforce card is offered. Cyborg dominated that fight and scored a TKO victory at 4:59 of the first round.

But there are deeper issues as well, as John explains what the role of a matchmaker should be, both in evaluating fighters and finding new ones. We discuss what happens to fighters as they age, both in mixed martial arts and boxing, and the effect on them of the accumulation of blows.

We also reopen a longstanding controversy by revisiting the question of which sport is safer for its fighters, mixed martial arts or boxing. Most people in mixed martial arts have long argued that it is safer than boxing, but changes in both the technique and matchmaking in mixed martial arts have led to many changes in that sport. The current opinion of John Perretti, a pioneer in mixed martial arts who in both Extreme Fighting and later in the UFC came up with the basic structure of modern mixed martial arts, might surprise many people.
