In the first interview Fertitta has granted to a sports publication, one of the leading figures and driving force behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship describes his upbringing, the early days in which the UFC struggled to break into the mainstream, outlining the events which led to its phenomenal success.

Pennsylvania to Allow Mixed Martial Arts

2-24-2009

Denver, CO

State Athletic Commission’s Newly-Approved Regulations Take Effect Feb. 27

HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Pennsylvania has joined the growing number of states to allow Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, events, now that the State Athletic Commission has approved final regulations for the sport, Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes announced today. The new regulations take effect Feb. 27, 2009.

“I commend the work of the State Athletic Commission on the regulations, which were crafted to ensure participant and spectator safety,” Cortes said. “These efforts will assure licensure and testing of participants for communicable diseases, as well as require emergency medical care and insurance for participants. Regulation of the sport also will help ensure that events are orderly and crowd control is maintained.”

Cortes noted that MMA has actively sought regulation. Pennsylvania joins a growing number of states, including New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, California, Nevada and Florida that permit Mixed Martial Arts.

The State Athletic Commission anticipates regulating four to five MMA events per month, which may generate as much as $80,000 per year in revenue for the commission. As a self-supporting entity, the State Athletic Commission receives no taxpayer dollars from the state’s General Fund.

The commission and staff worked for more than a year to prepare the final regulations, which are commensurate with current boxing rules. Health and safety of the fighters and public protection are key themes of the regulations. Many facets of the sport were addressed, including age and medical requirements, fees, promoter activity, and ring requirements.

The regulations require that all professional ($22 fee) and amateur ($10 fee) MMA fighters must be licensed and take a pre-fight physical exam by a commission-approved doctor. All fighters must be at least 18 years old. Other exams may also be required, particularly for boxers over the age of 36. All female fighters will be required to take a pregnancy test before each event. All fighters also must provide an annual physical (on a commission form) as well as a negative HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B exam at the time of licensing, and exams cannot be more than six months old. Insurance is required for all fighters and referees, and an ambulance and emergency personnel with emergency equipment must be at ringside at all times.

Highlights of the promoter regulations require that all promoters must have a valid promoter’s license from the commission, which costs $100 per year. All promoters must also complete a criminal background check on a form supplied by the commission (fee is $10). A surety bond of not less than $15,000 must be on file with the commission before an MMA event takes place.

As safety and fairness are primary concerns, specific requirements are also outlined for the ring. The ring must be at least 20 feet square and no larger than 32 feet square within the five-ring ropes. The ring floor must extend at least 18 inches beyond the ropes and must be padded with Ensolite, vinyl or similar closed-cell foam, with at least a one-inch layer of foam padding. Padding must extend beyond the ring ropes and over the edge of the platform, with a top covering of canvas, duck or similar material tightly stretched and laced to the ring platform. Material that gathers in lumps or ridges may not be used.

For cage events, the enclosed area must be circular or have at least six equal sides and be at least 20 feet wide and no larger than 32 feet wide. The floor of the caged area must be padded with Ensolite, vinyl or similar closed-cell foam, with at least a one-inch layer of foam padding. Foam padding must have a top covering of canvas, duck or similar material tightly stretched and laced to the platform of the caged area. Material that gathers in lumps or ridges may not be used.

No Holds Barred: The Need for a Warrior Culture
2-19-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-02-19T00_40_28-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses a wide variety of topics linked together by emphasizing that the average people (i.e., most of us) need a warrior culture.

In what is to become yet another controversial commentary, discussed are what the U.S. government believes is its greatest threat, why that assessment by the government is actually a threat to (most of) you, why you thus need a warrior culture, and how the combat sports are related to developing that culture. We discuss some battles going on involving the use of the Internet right now, and how some in the combat sports are using the Internet in a positive way, including the North American Fight Association (NAFA) (http://www.nafafighters.com) and the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Facebook discussion group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=10187160539).

We also tie in the need to support all the combat sports, and hear comments from Ken Hershman of Showtime and the legendary mixed martial arts fighter Frank Shamrock about boxing and mixed martial arts. And we hear comments from Miguel Cotto and the legendary trainer and cutman Miguel Diaz about Cotto's return to action Feb. 21 in Madison Square Garden against Michael Jennings, his first fight since suffering his first pro loss to the controversial Antonio Margarito in July 2008.

WAMMA To Launch First-Ever Nationally Recognized Female Fighter Poll
2-14-2009

Denver, CO

Orlando, Florida - The World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) has announced that it will be launching a monthly poll in 2009 that will rank the best female mixed martial arts in the world.

Starting in the first quarter of the New Year, WAMMA’s new female poll will rank the top ten female fighters in three separate weight classes: 125 pounds, 135 pounds, and 145 pounds.

WAMMA already conducts a monthly poll for the top ten male fighters in the bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, and heavyweight divisions. Rankings are available on www.GOWAMMA.com and released on or about the 15th of each month.

The WAMMA Top Ten Rankings for male fighters has been and will continue to operate as a writers/media poll with the top journalists in the industry selected to submit their top ten each month.

However, WAMMA’s new poll for female fighters will be conducted separately and will serve as an industry poll with promoters, managers, trainers, agents, and the fighters themselves also joining select members of the media in determining the monthly rankings.

“We are sure that the decision to conduct an industry poll for our female rankings will raise some eyebrows,” began WAMMA Chief Operating Officer Michael Lynch. “However, after an exhaustive search, it was determined that while there are many knowledgeable experts on the field of female MMA, most of them have an industry affiliation. Much like the NFL allows its players to vote in its Pro Bowl selections, WAMMA has elected to follow a similar model. We’re going to allow the female fighting industry tell the world who its best fighters are.”

While it will be an industry poll with fighters allowed to participate, all pollsters will have to pass through a vetting process. Their monthly ballots will be evaluated and if it is determined that a pollster is voting in a biased manner, he or she will be dismissed as a pollster. Fighters will also not be allowed to vote in the weight class that they most recently competed in.

Serving as the chair for the new female poll is Sam Caplan, the publisher of FiveOuncesOfPain.com and a contributing writer for CBSSports.com. Caplan also serves as the chair for the men’s poll.

“WAMMA has billed itself as a fan and fighter-forward organization,” said Caplan. “There have been several calls to start a prominent women’s poll to help female fighters gain additional exposure. The decision to respond to those requests and start a monthly poll is proof that WAMMA is sincere in its statements to help advance the growth of the sport.”

Jeff Osborne, promoter of the HOOKnSHOOT promotion and one of female MMA’s strongest advocates, along with Team Bison MMA trainer Mike Reilly, fighter-turned-writer Adam Baker of DreamFighters.com, and freelance MMA journalist Yael Grauer have already signed on as pollsters. Those interested in joining the poll can contact Sam Caplan at: SCaplan8@gmail.com.

No Holds Barred: For Scandal-Ridden Boxing, Tougher Regulation or Abolition?

2-13-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-02-12T11_17_22-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman comments on the implications of the latest major scandal in boxing, involving former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito and his trainer, Javier Capetillo.

Both Margarito and Capetillo had their licenses revoked for at least a year on Feb. 10 by the California State Athletic Commission after the commission found that Capetillo had placed pads in Margarito's hand wraps which reportedly contained a hard, plaster-like substance, before his Jan. 24 fight with Shane Mosley. These pads were discovered by Mosley's trainer, Naazim Richardson, during a prefight inspection, and then removed. Mosley, an underdog, then went on to dominate Margarito and scored a ninth-round TKO victory.

In this commentary, we discuss what are really the only two alternatives for the sport of boxing: tougher regulation by the often incompetent and ineffective bodies which are supposed to control the sport, or abolition of the sport itself.

Venue: From HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

NEW YORK (Feb. 11, 2009)—Three-time world champion and mixed martial arts legend, Frank Shamrock (24-9-1), will make his dramatic return to the cage when he squares off with fellow knockout artist Nick Diaz (18-7, 1 NC) in the main event of Strikeforce’s first MMA event of the year at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, April 11.

The event represents the dawn of a new age for Strikeforce as it will be the first event under its new television agreement with premium television network SHOWTIME. The live telecast will feature up to five fights including the Shamrock-Diaz main event beginning live at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

The matchup, which will be contested at a catch weight of 179 lbs, is an opportunity for the hard-punching Diaz to avenge a devastating, 21-second knockout that his trainer, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Cesar Gracie, suffered at the hands of Shamrock in the main event of Strikeforce’s historic MMA debut event at HP Pavilion on March 10, 2006.

Also on the fight card, middleweight (185-pound limit) sluggers Scott “Hands of Steel” Smith (16-5, 1 NC) and Benji “Razor” Radach (19-4) will battle each other in a featured contest.

Tickets for “Shamrock vs. Diaz,” priced from $30, go on sale to the general public on Monday, February 23, at 10 a.m. PT at the HP Pavilion box office (408-287-7070) as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (408-998-TIXS), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

Showtime Networks Inc. and Strikeforce jointly announced last week a multi-year agreement to create an all-new series of MMA events that will air live on SHOWTIME as part of the SHOWTIME Sports franchise. The two entities will produce and televise up to 16 live events per year, including world championship fight cards as well as a series dedicated to showcasing up-and-coming fighters in the sport.

The agreement reunites SHOWTIME and Strikeforce following their successful “Shamrock vs. Baroni” event, presented by SHOWTIME PPV in 2007 and the Shamrock vs. Cung Le telecast, which aired live on SHOWTIME.

W1 MMA - Legendary Carlos Newton returns to fight in Canada!!
2-11-2009
, Denver, C
Event date: March 28th, 2009
Venue: ROBERT GUERTIN ARENA, GATINEAU, QUEBEC
www.w1mma.com

W1 MMA is pleased to announce their debut event on March 28th, 2009 at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau, Quebec. The event “W1: INCEPTION” will mark the unveiling of Canada’s newest MMA promotion and is expected to make a huge splash on the Canadian scene.

In a fight, thirteen years in the making, CARLOS ‘THE RONIN’ NEWTON will be headlining the event in his first fight on Canadian soil since 1996. Newton made his MMA debut on April 26th, 1996 in Montreal and his career has taken him to every corner of the globe, but has never made a return to Canada. The first ever Canadian UFC Champion and former number one ranked fighter in the world, Newton has faced almost every superstar of his era including Kazushi Sakuraba, Pat Miletich, Matt Hughes, Jose Landi-Jons, Anderson Silva, Renzo Gracie and Matt Lindland. Now Newton is looking to make his mark against the new breed of MMA talent that has hit the scene in the last few years.

"I have been away from MMA for some time now and I couldn't be more excited to be back. It only seems right to make my return in my home country and with a great organization like W1,” said Newton regarding his MMA return.

Standing in Newton’s way, is one of Canada’s top welterweights, Ottawa’s own NABIL ‘THE THRILL’ KHATIB. Khatib has a win over UFC veteran Gideon Ray and has faced some of the world’s most talented athletes. The veteran Khatib has seen everything there is in the martial arts world and is expecting to spoil Newton’s Canadian homecoming. An extremely popular fighter in the Gatineau/Ottawa area, Khatib is expected to have a lot of his fans cheering him on against the popular Newton.

In the Co-Main event, MARK ‘BOOTS’ HOLST, from the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts will be facing 2-Time UFC Veteran LUKE ‘LIL HULK’ CAUDILLO. Caudillo is the toughest challenge in Holst’s young career, but Holst was quick to accept the offer of the American star. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Holst is taking a huge step up in competition but believes he is ready for this test. Could this be the unveiling of a new Canadian superstar? A trip inside the W1 cage will answer that question.

STRIKEFORCE INKS DEAL WITH PRO ELITE

2-006-2009

Denver, CO

LOS ANGELES, CA. — In a transaction signaling the dawn of a new era in the world's fastest growing sport, world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) organization Strikeforce®, has acquired certain fighter contracts from ProElite, Inc, the parent company of former Strikeforce ® co-promoter, Elite Xtreme Combat (EliteXC).

Strikeforce® also acquired other specific assets of ProElite, including a library of EliteXC events, which were distributed live on either CBS or Showtime Networks.

"This is a tremendous development that will bolster the Strikeforce® roster and allow us to produce even more competitive matchups between top fighters," said Scott Coker, Founder and CEO of Strikeforce®. "Some of these athletes have been on the sidelines for a while now and are eagerly waiting to return to competition. We look forward to providing them with the opportunity to do so in the next few months."

Strikeforce® and EliteXC joined forces to deliver the first live SHOWTIME PPV® MMA event, "Shamrock vs. Baroni," on June 22, 2007. In the headlining contest, former UFC middleweight champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock submitted knockout artist Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni in the second round, where upon Shamrock became the first Strikeforce® World Middleweight Champion.

On March 29, 2008, the two promotions collaborated once more to deliver a live telecast on SHOWTIME® featuring one of the sport's most anticipated showdowns – Shamrock versus undefeated world kickboxing champion Cung Le. In a battle that has since been proclaimed "Fight Of The Year" by critics, Le seized the Strikeforce® middleweight crown by pouring on a relentless offensive and fending off Shamrock's counter attacks before breaking the defending champion's arm with a hard roundhouse kick. Shamrock retired from the bout after the third round of a five round match.

A martial arts promoter for over 23 years, Coker has gained widespread acclaim among industry colleagues and the media, including Rolling Stone magazine, Yahoo! Sports, and The San Jose Mercury News. Coker elevated his 14-year-old Strikeforce® organization to become a major player in the World's fastest growing sport. Strikeforce's® inaugural MMA event hosted a capacity crowd of 18,265 at San Jose's HP Pavilion on March 10, 2006. The live gate figure also broke the then all-time record for attendance at an MMA event held in North America.

EliteXC burst onto the MMA scene with "Destiny," the first live, SHOWTIME®-televised MMA fight card in history, on February 10, 2007. Held at Southaven Mississippi's DeSoto Civic Center, the main event pitted Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, Renzo Gracie.

The promotion made history again by bringing, for the first time, a live MMA event to the CBS Television Network on May 31, 2008.

To access this presale, users must register for the UFC newsletter through ufc.com.

The UFC’s first-ever event in Nashville will be headlined by the contrasting styles of submission specialist Carlos Condit and the top-tier striking of Martin Kampmann. UFC® Fight Night™ will also include The Ultimate Fighter® Season 8 winners Ryan Bader and Efrain Escudero, The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 standout Cole Miller, The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 contestant Junie Browning and light heavyweight contender Carmelo Marrero.

Winner of his last eight MMA bouts, former World Extreme Cagefighting® welterweight champion Carlos Condit (fighting out of Phoenix, AZ) makes his UFC debut on April 1. The 24-year-old is a native of Albuquerque, NM, and has submitted four of the five WEC opponents he has faced, winning all the matches within four rounds. The former WEC 170-pound champ holds impressive submission wins against UFC veterans Brock Larson and John Alessio. It’s going to be a battle of Condit’s phenomenal ground game vs. Kampmann’s world-class kickboxing when these two explosive welterweights meet.

Kampmann (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.), a former Thai boxing champion in his native Denmark, won his first four bouts in the Octagon™ as a middleweight, and after dropping down to welterweight, Kampmann has continued his string of success, defeating Alexandre Barros via TKO in January at UFC 93.

After winning Season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter, Efrain Escudero and Ryan Bader will make their true UFC debuts. The 25-year-old Bader (Tempe, Ariz.) attended Arizona State University where he was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Pac-10 wrestler. He is coming off an impressive first-round TKO over Vinny Magalhaes in December 2008 to be crowned The Ultimate Fighter in the light heavyweight division. However, his next big test in the Octagon™ comes against Carmelo Marrero (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.), who made a big splash in his Octagon debut in October 2006 at UFC 64 by winning a split decision over the dangerous Cheick Kongo. Following a drop to light heavyweight, he won his last fight against Steve Steinbeiss in a WEC matchup last November, and looks to continue his winning ways against Bader.

Undefeated Efrain Escudero (fighting out of Tempe, Ariz.) makes his first appearance in the Octagon since winning the lightweight division on the eighth season of The Ultimate Fighter with a three-round decision victory against Phillipe Nover in December 2008. Born in Mexico and raised in Tucson, Ariz., the former All-American collegiate wrestler’s opponent will be announced shortly.

Spike TV will open the two-hour televised fight card at 9:00 p.m. with a lightweight battle between two memorable contestants from The Ultimate Fighter. Browning (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) is a Kentucky-native who reached the semifinals in the lightweight division for The Ultimate Fighter Season 8. He scored an impressive victory via submission over Dave Kaplan on the show’s live finale undercard in December 2008. His opponent, Cole Miller (fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.), made a name for himself by catching Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jorge Gurgel in a triangle choke for a submission victory at UFC 86 last July. The Augusta, Georgia native and veteran of The Ultimate Fighter Season 5 has won three of his last four fights.

The remaining fights will be announced shortly.

No Holds Barred: Bjorn Rebney of Bellator Fighting Championships; Cheating in MMA and Sports

2-04-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-02-04T02_05_40-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the controversy which arose at the recent UFC event in the fight between Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn. According to numerous reports, St-Pierre's corner had to be stopped by officials from the Nevada State Athletic Commission from continuing to grease his body between rounds. This controversy is discussed in the context of the exposures of widespread cheating in the sports world in general, and also, of course, in society.

In our main interview, we speak with Bjorn Rebney, the founder and CEO of the Bellator Fighting Championships. This new mixed martial arts company will air its shows on the Spanish-language ESPN Deportes network in the U.S. for 12 consecutive Saturday nights, beginning April 4.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the vision and positioning of the Bellator Fighting Championships (http://bellator.com/), which is primarily targeting a Latino audience. We discuss the fighters they have signed so far, their extended tournament format, the rules, the plans for both live events and televised shows, how they want to approach the non-Spanish-speaking audience, and much more.

In the world of mixed martial arts there is not a more feared striker than Anderson Silva (fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil). While posting an amazing eight fight win streak in the UFC, the 33-year-old champion has stopped seven of those eight fights within two rounds, with only Patrick Cote seeing daylight in Round 3 before the champion earned the TKO victory at UFC 90. With two impressive wins over former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin, one over Nate Marquardt and a submission victory against former Pride® champion Dan Henderson, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt is riding high heading into his match with Thales Leites.

“I’m looking forward to fighting in Montreal,” Silva said. “I have a lot of Canadian fans. Thales is a very tough opponent, and it’s going to be a great fight.”

Winner of his last five UFC matches, 27-year-old Thales Leites (fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is truly hitting his stride in the world of mixed martial arts. With a split decision victory against Marquardt, submission victories over Ryan Jensen and Floyd Sword and most recently Drew McFedries, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt could be Silva’s greatest test on the ground to date.

“I feel great about this fight and I will be one hundred percent for sure.” Leites said. “I did my job to get recognized by the UFC, and this will be the fight of my life. I know Anderson Silva is a very, very tough guy, but I know that I can do it.”

There are a few names that are synonymous with the UFC and Chuck Liddell (fighting out of San Luis Obispo) is one of those. The former UFC light heavyweight champion is coming off a loss to the division’s present title holder Rashad Evans and is looking to recapture the magic that saw him win an amazing 14 of 15 UFC matches from 1999-2006. The 39-year-old is now focused on getting back on another winning streak.

“I’m very excited about fighting Shogun,” Liddell said. “It’s another step in getting back my title. I’m going to hit him hard and I plan on knocking him out. The Canadian fans have been great for years. They are some of the most exciting fans in the world.”

With an impressive resume overseas, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil) is starting to make a name for himself in the UFC. The 27-year-old is coming off a TKO victory against former UFC heavyweight champion Mark Coleman at UFC 93 and is excited at the opportunity to fight a legend.

“It is an honor to fight Chuck Liddell, one of the greatest light heavyweights ever in the UFC,” Rua said. “I have a lot of respect for him, and I am very excited to fight him. I like to keep myself
challenged, and this fight with Chuck is definitely a big fight for me and for UFC fans.”

No Holds Barred: Jacqui Snow on Social Media, Computer and Internet Security,

and the Combat Sports

1-25-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-01-24T11_25_40-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Jacqui Snow, our correspondent and the technical consultant for No Holds Barred. She is also a moderator of the very popular MySpace Boxing Forum (http://groups.myspace.com/boxing), which has over eight thousand members.

For almost two weeks, No Holds Barred was unable to be produced because of an attack by viruses and adware gotten from a pop-up ad on a sleazy boxing web site.

In a lengthy and animated interview, we discuss just what happened with this virus and adware attack, what steps can be taken to avoid and prevent such attacks, and why certain web sites stoop to trying to make money by such predatory practices.

We also discuss the growing importance of social media sites such as MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter, and how they are transforming the way fans of the combat sports get information and communicate with each other. We also comment on the continuing, pathetic ignorance of and resistance to social media by most of the boxing establishment, along with many other issues.

There are very few fighters who are riding higher than Mike Brown (5’6”/145 lbs., fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla.) right now. The 33-year-old earned a devastating TKO victory over what seemed to be an indestructible Urijah Faber to earn the WEC featherweight championship last November. Now Brown will fight in his first title defense and not only puts up the title but an impressive 20-4 mixed martial arts record.

“I’m feeling good,” Brown said. “I like the matchup. I want big fights and Leonard’s a big name. I started training hard again a few weeks ago and I feel great. I’m 33, I’m not getting any younger so I want to fight the biggest names.”

Brown will need to get right to work when the champion stares across the cage at Texas fighter Leonard Garcia (5’10”/145 lbs., fighting out of Lubbock, Texas). Garcia, 16-3, is undefeated in three WEC matches and is coming off an impressive first-round TKO victory against MMA veteran Jens Pulver. The 29-year-old Garcia is no stranger to exciting matchups. His 2007 fight against Roger Huerta at UFC® 69, was immortalized on the front cover of Sports Illustrated. Now the WEC’s top featherweight contender focuses on the biggest match of his career.

“I was expecting to fight in his backyard,” said the Plainview, Texas native. “I didn’t care. Like I told my manager, I’ll go to his house and fight. It feels good to fight in Texas. Being that I have a huge Hispanic

following, it’s going to be a great night in Corpus Christi. He’s a big strong guy. He’s got the ability to hold you down and punish you.”

There’s been one man that has completely dominated the WEC’s 170-pound division and that man is Welterweight champion Carlos Condit (6’2”/170 lbs., fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.). With a first-round submission victory against Larson in 2007, Condit will be coming in with plenty of confidence. At only 24, the champion has compiled a 21-4 record and is 5-0 in the WEC with four wins coming via submission and one by TKO. Now the champion faces a man he knows all too well.

“I am excited for the matchup,” Condit said. “The first time out I was able to make it a short night. Since then he has evolved as a fighter and he is a very dangerous opponent. I think my new training camp will help me be better prepared for a very tough Brock Larson. I feel like I am facing the top 170-pounder in the WEC. Brock has been on fire as of late and I expect him to give me a very tough fight.”

Title shots are a luxury that some fighters never receive; and Brock Larson (5’11”/170 lbs., fighting out of Brainerd, Minn.), who has won his last two fights since losing to Condit, knows that a second shot at the belt is something that cannot be wasted.

“I’m confident that there’s going to be a different outcome,” Larson said. “I’ve been in there and felt how strong he is or isn’t. I’ve got everything to gain and he’s got everything to lose. I’ve got a lot more confidence and I know it’s going to be a war. I’m training for 25 minutes of hell. There’s no need to finish a fight in the first round. I’m going to go in there and do my thing. I’m going to slow it down, win the fight more strategically.”

All bouts subject to change. For more information about current WEC fight news, visit wec.tv.

Carson's Corner: Stevia advocate Dan Quinn and MMA manager Tommy Rojas!
1-16-2009

Denver, CO

We have two very entertaining and informative guests on tap for you today on Carson's Corner.

First up is Mr. Dan Quinn. Dan is a former Notre Dame football player who also competed professionally in the sports of boxing and MMA. Dan and Bob sat down for a long talk this week. They covered a wide variety of topics, including (but not limited to) Dan's football and fighting careers, his opinion on how he would stack up against certain fighters that are quite well known today and his belief that the supplement stevia is perhaps the most important addition that a person can make to his or her diet. Dan is a charismatic speaker, and you're going to want to hear what he has to say.

After Bob's interview with Dan, stay tuned to hear what MMA manager Tommy Rojas has to say about Rampage Jackson. Tommy told Bob the behind-the-scenes story about Rampage's K-1 fight against Cyril Abidi. It's interesting stuff, and it's a chance for you to hear what happened from one of the people on the inside.

Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association

Seeks To Free Its Members From EliteXC Promotional Agreements
1-14-2009

Denver, CO

SCOTTSDALE, AZ – January 13, 2009 - The Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association ("MMAFA"), on behalf of its members, forwarded a demand letter today to EliteXC Live, a California corporation ("EliteXC"). MMAFA seeks an acknowledgment from EliteXC that its promotional agreements have been terminated. While hopeful that litigation will be unnecessary, a draft of complaint has been prepared and forwarded to EliteXC officials. According to the letter, EliteXC has a limited time in order to voluntarily provide the release to all of the fighters, and if EliteXC refuses, MMAFA will file a complaint.

On November 10, 2008, in an action initially spearheaded by agent Ken Pavia, a group of agents, including Ed Soares and Monte Cox, collaborated to "pool resources" to fight the proposed auction of and transferabily of EliteXC's promotional agreements. "The unity of this effort is unprecedented and the message that is being sent is clear," declared the agents. Recognizing the success of their prior action, a number of agents sought collective action again in resolving contractual issues with EliteXC.

"This situation has gone on entirely too long," stated agent Ed Soares. "I can't have my fighters left in the dark and unable to sign with any promotion they choose."

Nathan Brodnax, Esq., counsel at MMAagents, echoed Soares comments. "We have made every effort to solve this problem outside the courts and have only turned to legal action as a last resort. Unfortunately, such steps have become necessary to protect the interests of our clients and to ensure their continued ability to make a living. We are confident that the courts will uphold our legal claims and request for relief."

"Unfortunately, individual litigation is cost prohibitive for our members. While it is our intention to reduce any unneeded expense," stated Rob Maysey, "MMAFA has reached out to and contacted top litigation counsel and is prepared to litigate this matter to a conclusion. Fighters and their families have been put in an unfortunate position and are unfairly bearing the burden of EliteXC's situation."

Maysey continued, "MMAFA acts only upon the instruction of our fighter members and their representatives. MMAFA has actively solicited input from agents and their respective legal teams. This initiative is truly collaborative and support has been widespread. At this time, our focus is solely on resolving the EliteXC contractual issue for our members."

UFC 95 Free on Spike TV

1-13-2009

Denver, CO

New York, NY, January 13, 2009 – Spike TV heads across the pond for the fourth time to telecast a UFC fight card when “The Ultimate Fighter” champions Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez (Season 1), making his debut in the lightweight division, and Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (Season 2) meet in a bout which headlines the telecast LIVE (to tape) Saturday, February 21 at 9:00pm ET/PT (same-day tape delay) from the O2 Arena in London, England.

UFC 95’s co-features are pivotal bouts in the middleweight and welterweight divisions, as Wilson Gouveia and Nate Marquardt meet at 185 lbs, and Rory Markham and Dan Hardy collide inside the Octagon™ at 170 lbs.

On the undercard, Josh Koscheck will look to spoil the UFC debut of newcomer Paulo Thiago in welterweight action, and submission specialist Demian Maia will welcome Chael Sonnen back to the UFC’s middleweight division in Sonnen’s first bout since coming over from the WEC.

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (34-9) from Victorville, CA, burst onto the MMA scene while appearing on “The Ultimate Fighter 2,” defeating Luke Cummo in the show’s finale to win the welterweight competition. After dropping down to lightweight, Stevenson defeated a succession of impressive opponents, including Yves Edwards, Melvin Guillard, and Kurt Pellegrino, to earn a shot at the lightweight title against BJ Penn. And though Stevenson fell short in his title effort, he looks to kick off 2009 on a winning note against Sanchez.

Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez (21-2) will make his debut in the lightweight division at UFC 95, a far cry from his days on the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter”, where he, incredibly, fought at middleweight. After defeating Kenny Florian to take home “The Ultimate Fighter” crown at Season 1’s finale, Sanchez dropped down to welterweight, and rattled off wins against some of the division’s best, including Nick Diaz, Karo Parisyan, and Joe Riggs. After dropping back to back bouts to Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch, Sanchez left the welterweight division on a high note, besting David Bielkheden and Luigi Fioravanti before announcing his move to lightweight. Now he’ll be aiming for his third straight win, this time with his eyes on BJ Penn’s lightweight belt, as he takes on Stevenson.

The night’s co-features will go a long way towards sorting out the contenders from the pretenders in the middleweight and welterweight divisions.

In middleweight action, Wilson Gouveia (12-5) is on a quest to win his third straight bout, and seventh in eight tries. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, who trains with American Top Team in Coconut Creek, FL, most recently defeated Jason McDonald at “The Ultimate Fighter 8” finale. He achieved this victory like he has all of his wins inside the Octagon: by finishing the bout before it went to the judges’ cards. Gouveia will look to continue that trend against Nate Marquardt.

Marquardt (30-8-2), who trains with Greg Jackson’s Submission Fighting camp in Albuquerque with current light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, made his UFC debut in 2005, and won his first four matches en route to a title shot against Anderson Silva at UFC 73 in July of 2007. Like so many of Silva’s foes, Marquardt dropped his bout with “The Spider,” but is hungry for another shot at the reigning middleweight champ. He began his quest by defeating Martin Kampmann at UFC 88 this past September, and Gouveia is the next step in his journey back towards the top of the 185 lbs. weight class.

In the welterweight division, Rory Markham takes on UK native Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy in a battle of two of the most promising talents in the division. Markham (16-4), a member of Team Miletich in Bettendorf, IA, made his UFC debut at “Ultimate Fight Night: Silva Vs Irvin” in July, winning by knockout in the first round over Brodie Farber. Finishing fights is not uncommon for Markham, who, in twenty professional bouts, has never had a fight go to decision. He’ll face a stiff test in Hardy (20-6, 1 NC), who showed great resiliency in winning his UFC debut against Akihiro Gono in October at UFC 89. Hardy won that slugfest via split decision, and the Nottingham, England native has never been stopped in a fight. He’ll need that iron jaw against Markham, as both men try and ascend the ranks of the welterweight division.

Also on the card, Josh Koscheck (14-3), coming off one of the most devastating knockouts of 2008 in defeating Yoshiyuki Yoshida on the UFC Fight for the Troops card in December, will take on UFC newcomer Paulo Thiago (7-0) in welterweight action. In the middleweight division, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu virtuoso Demian Maia (10-0) will look to remain perfect in the UFC and win his fifth straight fight via submission as he faces Team Quest member Chael Sonnen (23-9-1), who is fresh from a November 2008 victory over previously unbeaten Brazilian phenom Paulo Filho.

Freddie Roach Cornering Arlovski at Affliction II
1-10-2009

Denver, CO

Los Angeles, CA...Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach is no stranger to training some of the greatest champions in the sport. His latest endeavor is preparing Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) superstar Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski for his upcoming bout against WAMMA World Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction M-1 "Day of Reckoning" which will take place on Saturday, January 24 at Honda Center in Anaheim, CA and will be broadcast live on pay-per-view.

This is Roach's second fight with Arlovski who retained the esteemed trainer's services to help him with his boxing skills and overall readiness. Roach, who has trained some of the biggest names in boxing-reigning pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao, Oscar de la Hoya and Bernard Hopkins to name a few-now finds himself preparing Arlovski for the biggest MMA fight of the new year. Roach and Arlovski are preparing both mentally and physically, and they are supremely confident that come fight night, there will be a new man labeled the "Best on the Planet."

"I think a lot of people lose to Fedor before they even step into the ring," said Roach. "You need to have the balls to fight him and I know Andrei is ready and will dominate."

Roach is working alongside Arlovski's wrestling and jujitsu coaches at his Los Angeles based "Wild Card" gym. Arlovski trains early in the morning focusing on running and strength work, followed by afternoon sessions at the gym where Roach takes the lead honing Arlovski's boxing skills. During their afternoon sessions, Roach mimics Fedor's various moves that Roach has observed by watching film of Fedor's past performances. In the evening, Roach stands by and observes Arlovski's ground work preparation.

"I watched Fedor's last 20 fights and I am tired of him," said Roach. "It is easy for me to emulate his moves because he is predictable. He sucks at boxing. He can't box. He can punch, but he can't box. I know he's great on the ground. I know his moves. He won his last fight with his fists, but he ended it with a submission. There are certain moves that he has that we can take advantage of."

"We are working on the complete game," Roach said. "We will be prepared if the fight stays standing up or ends up on the ground. Andrei is very confident and so am I."

Fedor Emelianenko Speaks on Andrei Arlovski

1-8-2008

Denver, CO

STARY OSKOL, RUSSIA (Wednesday, January 7). There are just 17 days until Fedor Emelianenko defends his WAMMA heavyweight title against former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski during Affliction M-1"Day of Reckoning" on January 24 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California and live on Pay-Per-View.

Despite having recorded victories in the past over the likes for former PRIDE and interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Arlovski could pose Fedor's toughest test to date.

Fedor has recently had verbal salvos fired at him by both Arlovski and his boxing trainer Freddie Roach. Despite being secluded for his training camp in his Russian home city of Stary Oskol -- a small town in which cell phone connectivity is spotty at best and Internet access is almost non-existent -- Emelianenko heard the comments and elected to respond through an exclusive interview he had with FiveOuncesOfPain.com. In addition to those responses, Fedor shares other thoughts on his career and training. Here, then, are his responses.

Question: You train in your home town of Stary Oskol, which is very isolated from the rest of the world. With so many world class camps that now have some many top coaches and training partners, why do you choose to keep things simple?

Fedor: MY TRAINING IS NOT SIMPLE. I BELIEVE I TRAIN HARDER THAN ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD. AND THE STRENGTH AND POWER I OBTAIN CAN ONLY BE HERE IN RUSSIA. I FEED OFF MY SURROUNDINGS AND I DO NOT BELIEVE I WOULD BE AS PREPARED IF I TRAINED SOMEWHERE ELSE. I LIKE TO HAVE EVERYTHING I LOVE AROUND ME WHEN I TRAIN.

Question: During a recent press conference to promote "Day of Reckoning," Andrei Arlovski questioned the sincerity of a statement you made last month regarding your loss at the Combat Sambo Championships. His exact quote was the following:

"After his loss in the Sambo tournament, I think he's messed up a little bit. He says it's not important, but c'mon, let's be serious. He was unbeatable, like, five years, six years in Sambo, and he's not beatable in MMA. When you lose something, of course it's important. For me, it's really hard to believe that he doesn't care about it. Of course he cares. Now I don't think he is 100 percent sure of himself."

Fedor: MAYBE ANDREI IS TRYING TO CONVINCE HIMSELF THAT I HAVE BEEN WEAKENED IN SOME WAY. BUT IT IS NO MATTER. WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO WITH ANDREI. THE ONLY 100% I AM SURE ABOUT IS THAT I WILL BE 100% READY TO FIGHT MMA AGAINST ANDREI. AND THAT IS THE ONLY THING I CARE ABOUT RIGHT NOW.

Question: One of Arlovski's trainers, famed boxing trainer Freddie Roach, questioned some aspects of your standup from a technical boxing perspective, most notably your footwork. Do you feel Roach's criticisms are relevant to MMA?

Fedor: THE BEAUTY ABOUT MMA IS THAT EVERY FIGHTER HAS HIS OWN UNIQUE STYLE AND PREFERENCES. BUT IT IS NOT A BEAUTY CONTEST. WE FIGHT TO SEE WHICH FIGHTER'S APPROACH PREVAILS. BUT AGAIN, WE ARE NOT BOXING AND WE ARE NOT FIGHTING SAMBO. WE FIGHT MMA.

Question: How do you feel about an opponent's trainer picking a part your stand-up like that?

Fedor: SOMETIMES IT IS A TRAINER'S JOB TO POINT OUT WEAKNESSES IN HIS FIGHTER'S OPPONENTS. AND SOMETIMES IT IS A TRAINER'S JOB TO CONVINCE HIS FIGHTER THAT HIS OPPONENT HAS WEAKNESSES. WE WILL SEE.

Question: If you are able to defeat Arlovski, it's been said your next fight could come against the winner of the Barnett vs. Yvel fight. It's also been said that you are friends with Barnett. You said you weren't looking forward to fight Couture because he's a friend, so how do you feel about the possibility of facing him?

Fedor: YES, JOSH AND I ARE FRIENDS. BUT ONCE AGAIN, THE BEST SHOULD FIGHT THE BEST FOR THE SPORT OF MMA. IT WOULD BE OK.

Question: Your protégé, Kirill "Baby Fedor" Sidelnikov will also be competing at "Day of Reckoning." At only 20-years of age, do you think he's ready for such a high-profile match against a seasoned veteran such as Paul Buentello?

Fedor: KIRILL HAS IMPROVED GREATLY WITH HIS FIGHTS IN THE M-1 CHALLENGE AND HELPED OUR RED DEVIL TEAM REACH THE WORLD FINALS. I THINK BUENTELLO IS A OOD TEST FOR KIRILL BUT I KNOW KIRILL IS READY.

Question: During some recent interviews you revealed that you weren't looking forward to a possible fight vs. Couture because he's a friend. But if he were suddenly to become a free agent, would you refuse the fight?

Fedor: I WOULD NOT REFUSE THE FIGHT BECAUSE I BELIEVE RANDY AND I ARE BOTH AMBASSADORS FOR THE SPORT OF MMA AND WE WOULD HELP GROW THE SPORT VERY MUCH WITH THE FIGHT. THIS WAS THE MAIN REASON WHY I WANTED TO FIGHT RANDY, EVEN IF IT MEANT TO FIGHT SOMEONE I ADMIRED.

Question: M-1 USA Vice President Jerry Millen made the statement that in a fight with Brock Lesnar, he would not make it past the first round against you. Do you agree with that assessment?

Fedor: I DO NOT LIKE TO MAKE PREDICTIONS. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN IN A RING. LESNER HAS SOME NATURAL TALENT. IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING FIGHT FOR FANS TO SEE.

Question: There have also been questions raised about how much control you have over your career. Could you set the record straight and comment as to who has the final say in regard to who has final say: you or your management?

Fedor: IT DEPENDS ON THE DECISIONS. I AM NOT A SPECIALIST IN SOME THINGS. SOMETIMES I MAKE THE DECISIONS AND SOMETIMES WE MAKE THEM TOGETHER. IF I STOP FIGHTING TOMORROW, I STOP. IF I WANT TO FIGHT SAMBO, I FIGHT. IF I NEED TO FINISH MY TRAINING CAMP AND MISS A PRESS CONFERENCE, I NEED TO. BUT I AM LUCKY TO HAVE GOOD MANAGEMENT AND MY TEAM, M-1 GLOBAL. I AM PART OF M-1 GLOBAL SO IT IS EASY TO MAKE DECISIONS TOGETHER.

Question: Ideally, how many times would you like to fight in 2009?

Fedor: GOD WILLING, IT WILL BE NICE TO FIGHT 3 TIMES IN 2009 AND HAVE ONE MORE FIGHT NEW YEARS EVE.

Affliction M-1 "Day Of Reckoning"- Promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and brought to you by Affliction Entertainment and its partners, Donald J. Trump and M-1 Global, Affliction M-1 "Day of Reckoning" is scheduled for January 24 a Honda Center in Anaheim, CA and live on Pay-Per-View. The loaded fight card includes 11 rousing bouts of fierce, full-throttle action headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski.

The six-fight blockbuster PPV telecast, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, features MMA stars Josh Barnett, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Chris Horodecki and Matt Lindland in separate bouts. As a prelude to the highly anticipated PPV telecast, HDNet will televise live beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT five additional fights with the marquee match-up of Antonio Nogueira vs. Vladimir Matyushenko as the main event.

out of San Diego, Calif.) is looking to rebound from a submission loss to Marcus Hicks and improve his record to 7-1 when he squares off against Nigerian-born fighter Anthony Njokuani (6’0”/155 lbs., fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.), who is making his WEC debut. Ratcliff, a Chicago native with a black belt in Karate and Tae Kwon Do, has two WEC wins by referee stoppage.

Mexican-born Edgar Garcia (5’11”/170 lbs., fighting out of Yuma, Ariz.) is no stranger to competition. The 24-year-old was a state wrestling champion in Arizona and now holds a 6-0 mixed martial arts record. He’ll need all that experience when he faces judo black belt Hiromitsu Miura (5’9”/170 lbs., fighting out of Tokyo, Japan), who makes his fifth appearance in the WEC.

San Diego native Dominick Cruz (5’8”/135 lbs.) won’t have to travel far when he faces 24-year-old bantamweight Ian McCall (5’5”/135 lbs., fighting out of Dana Point, Calif.). Cruz (11-1) suffered his sole loss against former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber but rebounded with a unanimous decision win against Charlie Valencia last June. McCall (7-1) looks to rebound from a submission loss to Valencia in his last WEC match.

There’s no doubt that Frank Gomez (5’10”/135 lbs., fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) is receiving top-tier training. The Las Vegas native prepares with Greg Jackson’s camp in Albuquerque, has posted a 6-0 MMA record and will make his WEC debut against Scott Jorgensen (5’4”/135 lbs., fighting out of Boise, Idaho). A Payson, Utah born fighter, Jorgensen improved his record to 5-2 with a unanimous decision victory against Kenji Osawa in his second WEC bout.

A five-fight veteran of the WEC, Blas Avena (6’0”/170 lbs., fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev.) needed just 1:07 to stop Dave Terrel in his last fight. The East Los Angeles, California native, who has a 6-2 record, now turns his attention to Cedar Rapids, Iowa born fighter Jesse Lennox (5’9”/170 lbs., fighting out of Davenport, Iowa), who holds a 13-1 record.

East Los Angeles, California’s Charlie Valencia (5’3”/135 lbs., fighting out of Ontario, Calif.) is coming off consecutive losses and the 34-year-old looks to get back on the winning track against Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s Seth Dikun (5’10”/135 lbs., fighting out of Victorville, Calif.), who is 6-2 and is making his WEC debut. Valencia has two WEC wins, a submission victory against McCall and a referee stoppage over Antonio Banuelos

No Holds Barred: Art Davie of XARM

1-7-2009

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2009-01-06T18_27_52-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Art Davie, a co-founder of the UFC who is now the CEO of XARM (http://xarm.com/).

XARM is a new, hybrid combat sport, which combines kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and arm wrestling.

While some of the commentaries on XARM have been quite superficial, in a lengthy interview, we discuss with Art Davie the concept behind XARM, how it plans to fit into the combat sports world, what the criticisms of it have been, how it has already evolved and will likely continue to evolve, what are the plans to develop the sport, how it is related to the growth of both the Internet and mobile technology, and more. We also touch on some of the many problems facing mixed martial arts, from its formative days to the present.

Affliction “Day of Reckoning”: Explosive PPV and HDNet Match-ups Finalized
1-2-2009, Denver, CO

Event date: Saturday, January 24, Pay Per View Event—9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT

Venue: Honda Center, Anaheim, California

Seal Beach, CA (December 18, 2008) – The colossal Affliction “Day of Reckoning” fight card has now been finalized with explosive bouts set for both Pay-Per-View and HDNet telecasts. The scheduled 11-fight MMA extravaganza, including the much-anticipated main event battle between two of MMA’s most notorious heavyweights: Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko and Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski, promises to be an entertaining night of raging, all-star fight action.

“Day of Reckoning” takes place on Saturday, January 24 at Honda Center in Anaheim, California and will be televised live on Pay-Per-View at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. The show is stacked with great match-ups and some of the best talent in MMA today. The Emelianenko vs. Arlovski bout will decide who will be the reigning heavyweight champion of the world.

Emelianenko (28-1), universally recognized as the most dominating heavyweight in MMA, is the former undisputed PRIDE® Heavyweight Champion and Russian M-1 legend. He defends his newly acquired World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) Heavyweight Championship belt against hard-hitting striker and former UFC® Champ, Andrei Arlovski (14-5), who is on a five fight winning streak, with impressive performances over Ben Rothwell at “Affliction Banned” in July and most recently, Roy Nelson on the October 4 EliteXC show. When “The Emperor” and “The Pitbull” meet in the ring, it’s sure to be a fiery clash of will and technique.

Produced by Belmonte Productions, the blockbuster PPV telecast, which has a suggested retail price of $44.95, features other top-tier MMA stars battling it out in the ring, including Josh “The Baby Faced Assassin” Barnett (23-5), who is one of the top 10 heavyweights in the world, a celebrated wrestling star in Japan, and (formerly) the youngest UFC® Heavyweight Champion of all-time. He will go toe-to-toe with the hot-tempered Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel (35-12), in a match that has been labeled ‘highly combustible.’

Rounding out the Pay-Per-View telecast will be Brazilian fighter and former UFC® Light Heavyweight Champ, Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (17-8) facing off against former Olympic wrestler and Oregon State politician Matt “The Law” Lindland (21-5). Brazilian National Wrestling Champ and former UFC® Heavyweight Title Challenger, Renato “Babalu” Sobral (31-7), will fight Cameroonian mixed martial artist Thierry "The African Assassin" Sokoudjou (5-3). Lightweight standout Chris “The Polish Hammer” Horodecki (12-1) will face off against rising star Dan “The Upgrade” Lauzon (11-2), who is the brother of lightweight champ Joe Lauzon.

As a prelude to the epic PPV event, fans can tune in early to HDNet for the rest of the impressive “Day of Reckoning” undercard, with five additional fights. The telecast features the marquee light heavyweight rematch of Antonio “Minotoro” Nogueira (15-3) vs. Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko (21-3) as the main event, live at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT. Lil’ Nog will be looking to extract his revenge from “The Janitor” in this re-match which has been six years in the making. Also on the HDNet telecast, former IFL® Welterweight Champion Jay “The Thorobred” Hieron (16-4) will fight undefeated welterweight champ Jason High (8-0); nine-time TKO Featherweight Champion Mark “The Machine” Hominick (16-8) fights life-long wrestler LC Davis (12-1); and teacher and Cage of Fire Champion Albert “Al Boogey” Rios (11-3) squares off against Mexican Lightweight Champion of UCM Antonio “El Tigre” Duarte (11-1).

Promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and brought to you by Affliction Entertainment and its partners, Donald J. Trump and M-1 Global, Affliction “Day of Reckoning” is scheduled to include 11 rousing bouts of fierce, full-throttle battle headlined by Fedor Emelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski. The event will take place on January 24, 2009 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA and live on Pay-Per-View beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Ticket prices range from $50-$450 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster (available online at www.ticketmaster.com or at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 714-740-2000) and at Honda Center Box Office (714-704-2500).

LOCAL NEWS - Colorado MMA

RING OF FIRE 33: ADRENALINE!!

12-28-2008

Broomfield, CO

Promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean is happy to announce the promotion's next installment RING OF FIRE 33: ADRENALINE!!.

The 12 bout MMA event will take place on Saturday, January 10th,2009 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

MAIN EVENT:
In the main event bout of the evening, UFC veteran Alvin KID Robinson returns to Colorado for the first time in nearly two years.
A four time UFC veteran, Robinson is known as one of the slickest ground fighters in the sport. He made his UFC debut against The Ultimate Fighter's Kenny Florian in July of 2007. His biggest career victory came when he defeated Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Robinson holds the rank of Black Belt under the legendary Royce Gracie and is also a former All American wrestler. He won and defended the ROF Light Weight Championship three times and is now setting his sights on a career in the Feather Weight division.

"My natural walk around weight is in the high 150's low 160's. That was fine for a while but the guys in the weight class now are cutting from 180. Skill wise I was fine, but in MMA that's a lot of weight to give up. After my last fight we decided it was best to drop down to 145 and make a run for it there." said Robinson

"I have fought before at 145 and the cut wasn't a problem at all. There are so many top level guys at that weight that I feel I match up well with. Faber. Pulver. Brown. The division is so stacked. And with the WEC giving the guys a place to shine on TV, it's exciting. I can't wait to get back in the hunt."

But first Robinson has to get a win at ROF 33. No small task considering his opponent.

Keith Bach has an impressive 8-1 MMA record. He is also the current US Army Combative Flyweight Champion. Bach is a BJJ stylist and 5 of his 7 wins have come by way of submission. Out of those 5 wins only one fight has made it past the first round. Bach is a 2 time veteran of the "GI vs. PRO" MMA series produced by the Art Of War promotion. Being active duty military, Bach is a disciplined and well conditioned athlete. He has fought on big events in front of big crowds. He will not be intimidated by coming into Robinson's home town. Bach is excited at the chance to fight someone of Robinson's caliber. And like his opponent, he understands that a win at ROF 33 could very well lead to a shot a WEC greatness.

FEATURE BOUTS:
The fight card is stacked with talent from the top to bottom and will feature four title matches. ROF Bantam Weight Champion Joe Doherty will make his first title defense against Ultimate Fighter season 5 veteran Noah Thomas.
Fan favorite and ROF Welterweight Young Gun Champion Brandon RUCKUS Thatch will defend his belt against Ultimate Combat veteran Mike Arrant of Salt Lake City, UT.

RING OF FIRE has long been a proponent of women's mma and that tradition continues with ROF 33. But this time there will be a title on the line. Number one ranked female fighter, Cat Albert will face California's Angela Samaro for the first ever ROF Womens Young Gun Championship. Albert is known as one of the toughest women fighters in the industry with only one blemish on her record. Albert's one loss is to Louise Johnson back in 2007. A point not missed by her opponent, as Samaro choked Johnson unconcious when the two met the same year

Other notable fighters will be veterans Tyler THUNDER Toner, Jamie Schmidt, Justin Salas, Brian Wood , and former professional football player Brendan Schaub.

There will be five preliminary matches starting at 6:30, featuring some of the most promising debut fighters to appear on the promotion. US National Freestyle Champion and 4X US Nat'l Freestyle All-American Ramico Blackmon will make his MMA debut at 170 lbs. Rocky Mountain Body Building Champion, Chris Williamson will enter the cage for the first time at 185 lbs. And at Heavyweight, Pita Tua, will finally make his debut. Fans will want to keep a close eye on this guy as he comes from fighting stock. Pita has both Heavyweight Boxer David Tua and K-1 fighter Mou "Mighty Mo" Siligia in his family tree.

No Holds Barred: King Mo Lawal Prepares for Sengoku 7
12-27-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-27T00_56_29-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the recent deaths of mixed martial arts fighters Justin Eilers and Justin Levens, and what this might possibly reflect about that sport. We also raise some major criticisms of the Sengoku 7 mixed martial arts card, which takes place Sunday, January 4, 2009, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, near Tokyo. Fighting on that card will be heavyweight Antonio Silva, even though he is currently under suspension by the California State Athletic Commission for steroid use.

In our main interview segment, we speak with three-time U.S. national freestyle wrestling champion and now a mixed martial arts fighter with a record of 2-0, King Mo Lawal (http://www.myspace.com/molawal). Mo, a light heavyweight, will next be fighting veteran Yukiya Naito on that same Sengoku 7 card.

In a lengthy interview, we discussed what Mo knows about Yukiya Naito, how Mo prepared for this fight by training in Brazil, his plans to continue competing in wrestling and also to become a boxer, the role of freestyle and folkstyle wrestling in mixed martial arts, his attitude towards submissions, his King Mo persona in Japan and his Queens, and more.

No Holds Barred: The Grappling Revival

12-13-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-12T12_16_02-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman discusses an important development in the combat sports: the revival and resurgence of numerous important events in various styles of grappling.

As has been reported on the ADCC News (http://www.adcombat.com/), not only are plans moving forward for the 2009 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling World Championship, which will likely be held in late summer at a site to be determined, but there also has been an announcement that a new International Professional Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IPJJF) will start running events in 2009. The World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Cup will take place in April 2009, with trials in Brazil, the U.S., Canada, Japan, Europe, and Australia. More information on that will also be announced shortly.

In college wrestling in the U.S., a new all-time attendance record was set Saturday, December 6, when 15,955 fans jammed into Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City to see the top-ranked University of Iowa Hawkeyes defeat their intrastate rivals, the second-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, by a score of 20-15. That broke the old record of 15,646, set on Feb. 1, 2002, when Minnesota hosted Iowa at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

In the sport of sumo wrestling, a new professional company called the International Sumo League plans to run a tour of the U.S., starting Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, and culminating with a planned championship tournament in Madison Square Garden Saturday, November 7, 2009. Organized by some of the same people who ran the World Sumo League in 2005 and 2006, they are in talks with CBS Sports about televising their shows.

Taken together, it is clear that there is a grappling revival going on, and that is what we discuss on this edition of No Holds Barred.

No Holds Barred: John Perretti on the Devolution of Mixed Martial Arts

12-06-2008

Denver, COhttp://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-12-06T05_37_00-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins with some comments on the new college wrestling season, and the important development of the formation of the College Wrestling Network (
http://www.collegewrestlingnetwork.com/), a joint effort of several wrestling media outlets designed to expand the coverage of college wrestling on the Internet and to promote the sport.

In the main segment of this show, we speak with the legendary mixed martial arts matchmaker, promoter, and commentator, John Perretti.

Among the many topics covered in this spirited and frank discussion were why the Brock Lesnar-Randy Couture fight at UFC 91 was a "debacle", why UFC is a "fossil" in terms of what is once was, the devolution of mixed martial arts, the importance of people like Wallid Ismail to the sport, the recent controversy over the promotion by UFC of anti-social behavior on "The Ultimate Fighter" television series, the issue of sportsmanship, and what the combat sports ought to be about.

In addition, we both openly and enthusiastically endorsed the need for the formation of a fighters' union for mixed martial arts.

Denver's Ludwig bests Edwards, talks future..
11-26-2008

Denver, CO

Stepping in on short notice, Duane "Bang" Ludwig made the most of his opportunity by picking up a unanimous decision win over Yves Edwards in a catch weight fight.

Edwards got control early in the fight with a takedown while working to pass Ludwig's guard, and stayed there for the biggest part of the first round making his opponent work off his back.

The 2nd round saw Ludwig gain momentum with some good strikes that seem to put Edwards off balance, while he tried to take the fight back to the ground to avoid the strength of Ludwig's stand-up game.

When the final round began it looked as if Edwards was starting to wear out a bit as Ludwig became the aggressor eventually scoring a takedown of his own, going for strikes and starting to control the pace of the fight. When it was all over, Ludwig got the win, as Edwards seemed a bit despondent with the decision.

"It's not about me fighting people, I don't care about titles or fighting certain people, but I do need to find someone that wakes me up," Ludwig said after the win. "Yves Edwards scared me, he's a tough sucker, it woke me up."

When asked what's up next for him Ludwig replied "I don't really know, I'll leave that up to my manager. I'm going to take a little time off for Thanksgiving, gain some weight, and then get right back in the gym. This is my job. this is what I do to pay the bills so training is like going to work. I am lucky to be able to do what I love as a job."

"I don't really care who I fight next, as long as it is someone who motivates me. Someone who will get in my head and keep me focused and sharp. I wouldn't mind fighting again in Japan. We always have fun over there. But wherever, it doesn't matter. It is really who that matters more then where." Ludwig added.

"I want to thank my wife Jessica, my manager Boogie, and all my team mates for helping me get ready. I also had some really good support from sponsors on this fight which helped a lot. Sponsors are so important to us as fighters, really they are the ones that take care of us between the fights."

"I want to tell my fans thanks for the support as always. I hope I showed that I am still getting better and better with each fight, and that I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. A little turkey, some pumpkin pie, and then it's back to the gym. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!"

"Oh yeah.. Christmas is coming, go buy some Duane Bang gear!"

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester of Gladiator Magazine Names Eddie Goldman "Conscience of the Combat Sports"

11-25-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-11-24T17_22_47-08_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on the controversy around the November 15 mixed martial arts fight between Brock Lesnar and Randy Couture at UFC 91. We go to the No Holds Barred e-mail bag for an insightful analysis by a listener about how this fight may have symbolized "The Day That MMA Died", and then critique a number of so-called "experts" writing in the mainstream media defending the UFC promoters for handing the inexperienced Lesnar this title shot and inflating what his real athletic credentials are.

In the main part of this show, we speak with our long-time colleague, Todd Hester, the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine (http://gladmag.com/). Todd is also a correspondent on this show.

In its November 2008 edition, Gladiator Magazine announced that it has presented its first-ever Lifetime Journalism Achievement Award to Eddie Goldman. In an article in its November 2008 issue, Eddie Goldman was also named the "Conscience of the Combat Sports".

In a lengthy interview, we discuss why this award was given, and then, as is befitting on a show called No Holds Barred, jump into explaining and analyzing some of the pressing problems in the combat sports of mixed martial arts, boxing, and wrestling.

Gladiator Magazine Presents Eddie Goldman First-Ever Lifetime Journalism Achievement Award, Names Him "Conscience of the Combat Sports"

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 24 -- Gladiator Magazine, which provides in-depth coverage of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling, and mixed martial arts, has announced that it has presented its first-ever Lifetime Journalism Achievement Award to veteran combat sports journalist Eddie Goldman. "An advocate for the combat sports based on his philosophical viewpoint that the warrior culture is a noble calling that has the power to transform lives, Goldman has somehow managed to provide expert commentary not just on mixed martial arts but also boxing, college and Olympic wrestling, and many other endeavors that stretch its participants to their ultimate capacity," said Todd Hester, publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine.

"It is with great pleasure that Gladiator Magazine is proud to present its first Lifetime Journalism Achievement Award to Eddie Goldman for his work promoting all the combat sports."

"This is indeed a great and humbling honor for me to receive such an award," said Eddie Goldman. "I just try to tell the truth and stand up for what is right, both of which seem to be vanishing practices in this era of corporate concentration in the mainstream media, the relentless attacks on independent, rational, and critical thinking, especially in America, and the lack of integrity and spine in so many of the so-called journalists of today."

BFC - New Mixed Martial Arts League Strikes National TV Deal, Breaks New Ground

11-19-2008

Denver, CO

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Bellator Fighting Championships, a first of its kind Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotion, officially launched operations today from offices in Los Angeles and Chicago. Three years in development, Bellator has an exclusive television agreement with ESPN Deportes. Bellator season #1 premieres on ESPN Deportes in April, 2009.

Bellator (Latin for warrior), marks a step forward in the evolution of professional Mixed Martial Arts with a business model unique in the fight industry, yet followed in every other major sport. At Bellator, a fighter's wins or losses control his future. Bjorn Rebney, Bellator founder & CEO states, "We are implementing a tournament structure to determine champions and #1 challengers so that world-class fighters can control their destiny based on their performance." Bellator events will showcase highly competitive fights between top competitors with each tournament bout winner earning substantially larger purses and moving closer to a championship fight. "Simply put, at Bellator, fighters fight their way to the title," Rebney adds.

With a tagline that refers to its fighters as warriors that are on their way to becoming legends, Bellator differentiates itself by making its fighters the focus of the organization. "The fans' connection to Bellator will be created through our fighters. That understanding will drive the promotion, publicity, marketing and advertising of Bellator's fighters, making them the centerpiece of what we do," says Rebney. On each telecast, leading up to tournament bouts, Bellator Fighting Championships will air back-stories on each fighter. "We will use the simple yet powerful sports programming philosophy of combining elite competition with compelling feature pieces that tell the story of who these fighters are, where they're from and why they compete," says Bellator founder & COO Brad Epstein. "MMA fighters have incredibly rich stories to tell, and we will bring these to MMA fans, allowing our audience to identify with who these warriors really are."

Bellator's nationally televised events will be highly competitive sports programming in its purest form and will have no connection to "reality television." These events are structured as tournament competitions, crowning champions and top challengers at the end of each season. Bellator's premiere season consists of 12 two-hour events to be broadcast weekly in primetime on Saturday nights. The nationally televised events will feature a combination of tournament and non-tournament special feature bouts. There will be four simultaneous tournaments taking place in season #1 over a three month period: one in each of the Featherweight (145 lb.), Lightweight (155 lb.), Welterweight (170 lb.) and Middleweight (185 lb.) divisions. Eight fighters from around the world will be represented in each division. To win the Bellator Championship, a fighter must win a total of three fights, each consisting of three five-minute rounds over a three month period. At the end of the initial three month, 12-event season, Bellator will have crowned four Bellator Champions and will have awarded each Champion $175,000. Opening round winners receive $25,000, semi-final round winners receive $50,000 and final winners receive $100,000.

"Mixed Martial Arts is becoming increasingly popular among Hispanics and we are thrilled to work with Bellator Fighting Championships to showcase these world-class athletes on a national platform," says Lino Garcia, general manager, ESPN Deportes. "The structure of this championship will give fans a unique opportunity to follow their athletes as the tournament progresses."

Bellator's interactive Web site,
www.bellator.com, featuring event and fighter information, behind the scenes video footage, fight clips and live interaction with Bellator fighters will go live in late December, 2008.

UFC Champ Randy Couture Sued for Non-Payment of $175,000 for Production of Gala to Support Military Families

11-14-2008

Denver, CO

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Randy Couture, the Heavyweight Champ of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is being sued for non-payment for the production of a gala that was to help military families. Couture, who is fighting in Las Vegas this weekend as part of an UFC card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, also heads an organization known as Xtreme Couture GI Foundation, a Nevada based, non-profit organization dedicated to financial support of military families. The event, which was held May 27, 2007, was also purportedly held to support the launch of Couture's clothing line.

"Our client, Toast of New York, LLC, performed under incredible pressure and a constantly shrinking budget to produce a large scale, cutting edge event as requested by Couture and his representatives," explained Terry Coffing, managing partner in the law firm of Marquis & Aurbach.

Toast of New York, which specializes in high end red carpet/black tie events, literally transformed Couture's gym into an over the top experience; instead of a red carpet, UFC fighters walked an entry of custom designed camouflage carpet and custom choppers. The room was themed with a DJ in a fighting Octagon and guests were treated to the hottest video games through Xbox Live. Video of the event is available at http://homepage.mac.com/realityedit/couture/FileSharing142.html

Explained Coffing, "Our client was not responsible for selling tickets or getting sponsors to the event -- Couture's agent, Matt Walker, believed Couture's name would be a big enough draw to bring sponsors and ticket holders in droves. The suit alleges that when neither the crowds nor the sponsors showed, Couture only paid $50,000 of the $175,000 bill."

Toast of New York, LLC is an event planning and production company with offices on both coasts. The company has experience in planning events for national entertainment, products and sports figures. Past clients have included Fox Television, X-Box, Oprah, Coors Light, ESPN and Maxim Magazine.
