http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-10-20T11_35_41-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990's in Amarillo, Texas.

Our focus on this show is the debut mixed martial arts card being held Friday, October 24, in Amarillo, of Shark Fight Promotions (http://sharkfights.com).

This card, which will take place at the Amarillo National Center on the Tri-State Exposition grounds right near Interstate 40, will also be available on an Internet pay-per-view. Steve will be the lead commentator for this Internet pay-per-view.

Besides the fight card, there will also be a tribute on this show to Amarillo native, the late Evan Tanner. One dollar of every pay-per-view purchase will be donated to the Evan Tanner Scholarship Fund.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the debut of Shark Fight Promotions in Amarillo, this fight card and which fighters to watch most closely, mixed martial arts and wrestling in Amarillo and Texas, and more.

We also open the show with some comments on the masterful performance of Bernard Hopkins this past Saturday night, Oct. 18, in defeating Kelly Pavlik by a lopsided unanimous decision.

15 Years of PANCRASE on Pay-Per-View 90 minutes of non-stop fight footage!

10-16-2008

Denver, CO

San Diego, California – Sports Action Network International (SAN)®, a next generation online streaming network, has reached an agreement with iBN Sports to broadcast the 15 year Anniversary of PANCRASE video on demand (VOD) pay-per-view. This historical project encompasses all of the past and present glory of the PANCRASE organization, featuring 90 minutes of nonstop fight action, highlighting the best moments in over 130 PANCRASE battles.

“We are extremely excited about our agreement with iBN Sports to broadcast the 15 Year Anniversary of PANCRASE video on pay-per view. It enables us to make this exciting piece of MMA history available to mixed martial arts fans worldwide.” states George Boley, Production Manager for Sports Action Network.

PANCRASE was founded in Japan in 1993 by Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki and is one of the longest running mixed martial arts (MMA) promotions in the world. The first PANCRASE event was held two days before UFC-1 was presented here in the United States. Many of MMA’s legends and current heroes got their start in PANCRASE. Fighters such as Bas Rutten, Ken Shamrock, Frank Shamrock, Josh Barnett, Guy Mezger, Nate Marquadt, Evan Tanner, Chris Lytle, Allan Goes, David Terrell and many more are showcased in this one high quality perspective. This MMA masterpiece is narrated by the current King of PANCRASE, and former UFC Heavy Weight Champion, Josh Barnett.

Josh had this to say in one of his recent My Space blog entries, “I recently finished up voiceover work for the PANCRASE 15 year anniversary DVD which will be distributed in the U.S. by SAN (Sports Action Network). George Boley and the guys at SAN have made available an awesome collection that looks into the fights and history that made PANCRASE. I did my best to also add my personal insight and background info as well, to give everyone access to some of the stories around the fights.”

According to the Sports Action Network team, the objective of this tribute is not only to pay homage to PANCRASE, but to honor some of the world’s elite champions that will forever be a part of the prestigious mixed martial arts organization. Despite its historical significance, this VOD feature is not a documentary. It is a monumental compilation of MMA fight footage that pays tribute to the great fighters of PANCRASE.

In another lengthy interview, we discuss one of the biggest scandals in U.S. mixed martial arts history, the controversy revolving around the Oct. 4 Kimbo Slice-Seth Petruzelli EliteXC fight, and the degree to which the promoters may or may not have tried to protect Kimbo by having Petruzelli avoid taking down Kimbo. KEN SHAMROCK issues statement about Elite XC fight

10-11-2008

Denver, CO

On October 4th, I was set to fight Kimbo Slice on the EliteXC/CBS Saturday Night Fights in a highly anticipated event. Unfortunately, because of a training accident and the intervention of the Florida State Boxing Commission, our fight did not happen. I suffered a cut above my left eye that required six stitches, and the cut was significant enough to cause the Florida State Boxing Commission to refuse to allow me to fight.

The scheduled bout with Kimbo on the EliteXC/CBS Saturday Night Fight card was a great opportunity, and it is unfortunate that I was unable to face Kimbo as planned. I want to apologize to all of my fans, and to the EliteXC and CBS executives who worked so hard to put this fight together. I also want to apologize to Kimbo, Bas Rutten and their entire camp for what happened. I recognize that I put them in a very bad situation, particularly Kimbo. It’s difficult to walk into the ring after training for one opponent only to find out hours before the fight that you have to face some you don’t know or have never seen fight.

Over the years there have been many great times as well as disappointing times and I know Saturday the fans were as disappointed as I was. I was worked up so I decided to train with my partners in order to stay focused on the fight. I was just doing a light roll to check holds when I got caught by a head butt. It was a freak accident and I didn’t think anything of it until I saw drops of blood. It appeared to be a deep laceration so I had my physician look at it and we immediately went to the emergency room. When they said the cut would require stitches, my heart sank because I knew that the Florida Boxing Commission would not let me fight. I was disappointed because I knew this was an opportunity to give the fans, my friends, and my family something to cheer about. It has been a hard couple of years for me, and for my fans. I have suffered some disappointing losses. I definitely regret my decision to train on the day of the fight.

I promise that I will make this up to all my fans. I know that there is nothing I can do about what occurred, but I plan to get back into the ring soon. I would like it to be against Kimbo Slice. Hopefully EliteXC/CBS will still be able to put a fight together. It’s is the right thing to do. The fans want it and I want it.

I would also like to congratulate Petruzelli on his win. He did a phenomenal job. Seth not only accepted the challenge of facing a new opponent; he also had to move up in weight class. He came in, dominated Kimbo and walked away with a great victory.

To the fans, I appreciate all of your support.

Thank you and God Bless.

Ken Shamrock

BIG JOHN leaves the Fight Network

10-08-2008

Denver, CO

Goodbye to Everyone
Big John McCarthy - Fight Network Ambassador

Well this is my farewell from the Fight Network. While I will not miss what has happened or transpired at the company, I am really going to miss some very special people that I have come to know and respect in my short time with them.

The Fight Network started out as the vision of Mike Garrow. Mike's vision for the network was one of the reasons I decided to leave refereeing and start a new career in commentating and analytical work. Mike has an incredible energy and is always coming up with new ideas and he did a miraculous job in getting The Fight Network from a simple idea into a fully functioning cable channel that covers the sports of Mixed Martial Arts, Boxing and Professional Wrestling 24 hours a day. It is very hard for anyone not associated with something like this to understand how much really goes into 24 hours of programming. Mike, thank you for the opportunity, thank you for believing in me, you will always be a friend.

Mauro Ranallo..... Wow. I don't really think many people truly know how talented Mauro really is. First off, he loves all combative sports, and he knows them better than most people. He is incredibly smart and has a photographic memory that makes the rest of us look retarded. Most people on TV are reading everything they are saying from a teleprompter. A very handy little gadget that fits in front of the camera lens and displays the words you are suppose to say. All you really have to do is know how to read and keep things moving. Mauro does not have or use a teleprompter. Mauro looks over a complete page filled with information and then systematically runs it down like he had 2 days to memorize it in only 60 seconds. He is remarkable. He has the ability to make bad fights good, good fights great, and great fights legendary with his commentary. Mauro, thank you for helping to teach me the trade. I listened to every word even though I was not smart enough to remember it all and was not fortunate enough to work with you near as much as I would have liked.

John Pollock is usually one of the behind the scene guys, but he has been stepping out and doing a lot of the commentary work while Mauro is away. John is like an encyclopedia when it comes to Professional Wrestling and really knows his stuff when it comes to MMA. John, I just want to say thanks, you really have a great future ahead of you and I feel fortunate that we were able to work together. I want to thank everyone else at The Fight Network for bringing me in and making me feel at home. There are a bunch of great people working there, John Ramdeen, Chris Tapanila, Chad Midgley, Anthony Ciccone, thank you I am going to miss working with all of you.

Last but not least I want to thank all the people that watch The Fight Network and log on to the website and read the blogs. I hope you have enjoyed what I have written about. You may not have agreed with it, but it was all written honestly. I hope to stay in the sport of MMA for the rest of my life. Is that possible, hell I don't really know? I have made mistakes and will probably make some more in the future, but I can assure you that I always try to put the sport of MMA first. I do not make statements or give opinions based upon whom I am working for, I always say the way I feel about things, some people like that and some people don't,

A few people have said that I have attacked the UFC. That is simply not true. I have never said anything bad about the UFC. I spent 14 years of my life trying to build up the UFC and make people understand how incredible the fighters of MMA were. I considered myself very lucky in the fact that I was able to be around the UFC for as long as I was and you never know maybe I will go back to refereeing and someday work another UFC.

To all of the higher ups that have taken over the Fight Network over the last year I only have this to say.............. Shame on you..................

WEC - Announces Torres vs Tapia and New Lineup of Weight Classes
9-28-2008

Denver, CO

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – With two spectacular wins that sky-rocketed him into the pound-for-pound stratosphere, WEC® bantamweight champion Miguel Angel Torres has been one of 2008’s great success stories. But the only man standing between him and likely recognition as Fighter of the Year is one of his greatest rivals, Manny Tapia, an unbeaten contender who has been waiting six months for his shot at the 135-pound weight class’ greatest prize. The World Extreme Cagefighting® organization is pleased to announce that on Wednesday, December 3rd, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, these two warriors will finally meet in an explosive contest guaranteed to produce fireworks.

World Extreme Cagefighting will be televised live nationally on VERSUS beginning at 9:00 pm ET/6:00 pm PT. All live WEC events will be presented in Hi-Definition (HD) where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus.

Tickets for World Extreme Cagefighting go on sale on Monday, Oct. 6 at 10am PT and will be priced at $225, $175, and $75 (not including applicable services or taxes). Tickets are available at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino box office and all Ticketmaster locations. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000. Tickets also are available online through www.wec.tv or www.ticketmaster.com.

The WEC also announced that, starting in 2009, the organization will focus on four weight classes: welterweight (170 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), featherweight (145 pounds), and bantamweight (135 pounds). The WEC will no longer actively promote light heavyweight and middleweight fights after the Dec. 3rd event. This increased attention to the sport’s lighter divisions makes the WEC the undisputed home of the most exciting lighter weight fighters in mixed martial arts.

“With every fight, the WEC has proven itself to be a powerful and growing presence in sports, both with our live events and our programming on VERSUS,” said Peter Dropick, WEC Vice President, Operations and Production. “Exciting matchups like Torres vs. Tapia on Dec. 3 and the incredible fights we have planned for 2009 under this new structure will no doubt establish WEC as the home of the best lighter weight fighters in the world.”

WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres (34-1) captured the attention of the worldwide MMA community when he put on a groundfighting clinic against Chase Beebe, capturing the title with a guillotine choke just 3:59 into the championship bout. His place among the elite was solidified in June, when he stopped tough Yoshiro Maeda at the end of the third round in one of the best fights of 2008. After years of fighting, Torres has finally earned his place as one of mixed martial arts’ best, pound for pound, but his reign won’t be complete until he defends his title against Manny Tapia.

Manny “The Mangler” Tapia (10-0-1) is a television favorite due to his aggressive style and KO power. He burst onto the WEC scene with an impressive TKO over Brandon Foxworth, and then followed that victory up with a three round war against veteran Antonio Banuelos that he won via a hard-fought decision. Having shown both heart and skill in the cage, now all he needs is a belt around his waist, something he hopes to take from Torres on December 3rd.

The remaining bouts for WEC: Torres vs Tapia will be announced in the near future. All bouts subject to change. For more information about WEC: Torres vs Tapia and current WEC fight news, visit www.wec.tv.

ELITEXC - Strips K. J. Noons of Lightweight Title

9-20-2008

Denver, CO

Belt Taken Away For Refusing To Fight Nick Diaz

LOS ANGELES – KJ Noons of San Diego has been stripped of his EliteXC lightweight title. The announcement was made late Friday by EliteXC Head of Fight Operations, Jeremy Lappen.

The foremost reason EliteXC is taking this action, Lappen said, was due to Noons’ reluctance to defend against leading 160-pound contender Nick Diaz of Stockton, Calif.

“We are stripping KJ of his championship belt for refusing to defend against Diaz,’’ Lappen said. “It’s a very unfortunate situation but we cannot have belt-holders who refuse to fight the top contenders. We want champions who will fight anyone, anytime, anyplace. That’s the mentality all champions should have.

“I feel very bad for KJ because I like him a lot on a personal level and have always thought he could be a big star. He’s charismatic, has a very exciting fighting style and is a top level fighter. So I’m obviously disappointed that he has chosen to take this stance.
“I don’t understand why he would turn down a chance to be a headliner on CBS on Oct. 4. KJ then turned down the fight again when we offered him a headlining spot on our next SHOWTIME date against Nick. From my view, it is a fight against a top-named opponent in Diaz (someone who beat the No. 1 fighter in the world in his weight class), a fighter KJ has bad blood with and most definitely a fight the fans really wanted to see. It seemed like a great opportunity for KJ to me.

“Personally, I do not think it was a smart career move, but I’m sure he sees it differently. KJ has two more fights remaining on his contract, so we are still looking forward to having him fight for us again soon, but not as our world champion.’’
EliteXC will announce a fight for the vacant lightweight title in the near future, Lappen said.

No Holds Barred: Evan Tanner Tribute with Steve Nelson

9-19-2008

Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman is joined by Steve Nelson, founder of the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) of Amarillo, Texas, to talk about the passing of mixed martial arts and wrestling champion Evan Tanner.

Evan Tanner, a native of Amarillo who was living in Oceanside, Calif., was a USWF heavyweight champion, a two-time Texas high school state wrestling champion, a UFC middleweight champion, and a Pancrase Neo-Blood Tournament champion. The 37-year-old Tanner was found dead Sept. 8 after he had been reported missing while on a camping trip in southern California.

In this interview, we discuss how Steve, who knew Evan for about 20 years, watched him progress from being a successful high school wrestler to become a champion in professional shoot wrestling and mixed martial arts. We discuss Evan's life, his legacy, his strengths and weaknesses, his unending search to find meaning for what he did, and, to use Evan's own words, his attempt to influence children positively by opposing "the message of self-glorification and disrespect" and being "the ultimate gentleman, honorable and respectful."

There will be a public memorial meeting for Evan Tanner Saturday, September 27, beginning at 2 PM CDT, at the Amarillo Civic Center in that building’s auditorium, at 401 S. Buchanan Street, in Amarillo. The memorial meeting is called "Evan Tanner - Celebration of Life - Memorial". Steve Nelson will be a featured speaker at this memorial.

No Holds Barred: Henry Cejudo, Randi Miller, Couture-UFC Mess
9-5-2008

Denver, CO

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins the first part of this show by commenting on the return of Randy Couture to the UFC and how this is a major setback for the battle for the rights of fighters in the mixed martial arts. We also discuss the further devolution of the UFC, some of the main reasons for the continuing failures of their rival mixed martial arts promotions, and the need for a grassroots coalition to advance the struggle for fighters' rights.

In the second part of the show, we turn to the sport of wrestling.

Two of the more pleasant stories coming out of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games were the gold medal victory in men's freestyle wrestling at 55kg by Henry Cejudo (http://teamcejudo.com/), and the bronze medal victory in women's freestyle wrestling at 63kg by Randi Miller (http:// randimiller.us/). Both were in New York for a series of media appearances this week, and we caught up with them.

Henry Cejudo discusses his Olympic victory, how he views both freestyle and folkstyle, wrestling in comparison to boxing and mixed martial arts, and his plans.

Randi Miller discusses her Olympic victory, her style of wrestling, women's wrestling and the importance of girl's high school wrestling programs, and her plans.

UFC ANNOUNCES UFC 91: COUTURE vs LESNAR
9-3-2008

Denver, CO

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – On November 15th, the champ is back.

Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White today announced that after a year away from the game, UFC® heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon to defend his title against rising star Brock Lesnar in a clash of titans destined to shake the foundations of the sport. This championship bout, the biggest heavyweight title fight in years, will headline UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR, live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008.

"I am happy to announce that UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture will be returning to action in the Octagon," said Dana White, UFC President. "He's a legend in the UFC, and one of the fighters that helped build this sport. I have always said that wrestling is one of the best bases you can have in MMA and not only is Randy a top level wrestler but his opponent is as well. Brock Lesnar showed the MMA world that he is for real in his last fight, dismantling the far more experienced Heath Herring. His combination of speed and power was absolutely devastating. It is a fascinating matchup: the crafty, multiple-time heavyweight champion versus the younger, bigger, and stronger challenger. This is one that will go down in the history books."

Ticket information for UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be announced shortly.

UFC 91: COUTURE vs. LESNAR will be available live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on iN DEMAND, DIRECTV, DISH Network, TVN, Bell ExpressVu, Shaw Communications and Viewer’s Choice Canada for a suggested retail price of $44.95 for standard definition or high-definition broadcasts (where available).

A UFC Hall of Famer whose name is synonymous with mixed martial arts, Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture (16-8) is the only fighter in history to win the UFC world heavyweight title three times, and that’s not even mentioning his two UFC light heavyweight titles. Owner of heavyweight wins over the likes of Maurice Smith, Vitor Belfort, Kevin Randleman, and Pedro Rizzo (twice), the 45-year old Las Vegas resident turned back the clock in 2007 with a stirring win over Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 that netted him his third heavyweight crown. Couture defended his title for the first time at UFC 74 with a third round TKO of number one contender Gabriel Gonzaga, and now the man often referred to as “Captain America” will look to prove once again that he should never be counted out in a fight when he takes on Brock Lesnar.

“I have a lot of respect for Brock as an athlete and a collegiate wrestler, but I know exactly where he’s at, he’s trying to make the transition from a wrestler to mixed martial arts,” said Couture. “I’ve been there, done that, and I know what the pitfalls are. This will be an interesting matchup, and it will be very nice to be home in the Octagon for this fight.”

A physically gifted athlete with the size, speed, and power to impose his will on any opponent, Brock Lesnar (2-1) made an immediate impact in the UFC when he debuted here in February of 2008, and he has his sights set on shocking the world on November 15th. A four-time All-American, two-time Big Ten Champion, and 2000 NCAA Division I National Champion in wrestling, Lesnar made a name for himself internationally after college as a professional wrestler, but he soon found his true love in mixed martial
arts in 2006. After a 69 second win in his pro debut a year later, Lesnar entered the UFC and made a positive impression in a loss to former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC 81, but at UFC 87 in August, the Minneapolis-St. Paul resident showed why he is rapidly becoming one of the most feared fighters in the sport today and an immediate threat to the heavyweight throne.

"It's an honor to fight Randy Couture, he's a legend in this sport, and to get the chance to test myself against him is a gift," said Lesnar. "A lot guys would love to have this opportunity, Randy is the UFC heavyweight champion. There is one goal that I've had since I started training in MMA and that is to capture the title. Now that I'm getting the chance, nothing is going to stop me. I'm walking out of the Octagon with the belt around my waist."

No Holds Barred: John Perretti and His New Sport

9-1-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-09-01T03_28_51-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with the legendary mixed martial arts promoter, matchmaker, and commentator, John Perretti.

For the past several years, John Perretti has been involved in attempting to launch a new, professional combat sport. It will be based on the ancient sport known as calcio storico (historic football) (http://blogs.discovery.com/news_archaeorama/2008/06/florences-crazy.html) or calcio fiorentino (Florentine football) (http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1143344/index.htm). This sport is a sort of combination of boxing, wrestling, martial arts, and football (soccer). It has existed in various forms for centuries in Florence, Italy, and now John Perretti wants to introduce it to the world.

In a lengthy interview, we discuss this new sport, as well the mixed martial arts and other issues.

No Holds Barred: Steve Nelson and the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation
8-30-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-08-28T22_12_12-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Steve Nelson, who fought in and ran the Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation (USWF) in the 1990's in Amarillo, Texas. This organization, which was one of the most successful local promotions of its time, held fights under what were called shootfighting rules, with only open hand strikes allowed, but with all submissions as well as kicks and knees permitted.

Steve was also a headliner in the company's most famous fight, when he took on Ralph Gracie, who had defeated him in under a minute in 1996 under no holds barred rules in Extreme Fighting 2 in the Mohawk community of Kahnawake near Montreal. The rematch took place August 22, 1998, at a USWF show in Amarillo.

This fight was my selection as the 1998 Fight of the Year in mixed discipline combat sports.

In a lengthy interview, we spoke with Steve about the USWF and its history, his fights with Ralph Gracie, some of the fighters from the USWF who became notable in mixed martial arts, the movement to establish a wrestling team at West Texas A&M University, the accomplishments of the boy's and girl's wrestling teams at Palo Duro High School in Amarillo, where Steve is the head coach, and more.

8-29-2008, Denver, CO

Event date: Saturday, October 4, 2008

Venue: Bankatlantic Center, Fort Lauderdale, Fla

LOS ANGELES – Incredibly popular hometown hero Kimbo Slice returns to 305 to face legendary Hall Of Famer Ken Shamrock in a featured fight on a stellar, star-studded mixed martial arts card that includes women’s superstar Gina “Conviction” Carano and MMA standouts Jake Shields, Paul Daley and Murilo “Ninja” Rua Saturday, Oct. 4, at the BankAtlantic Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Tickets start at $30 and are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (954) 523-3309 in Broward County, (305) 358-5885 in Dade County and (561) 966-3309 in Palm Beach County, online at www.ticketmaster.com and at the BankAtlantic Center box offices (954) 835-7825.

The BankAtlantic Center box offices are located on both the North and South sides of the main entrance. Their normal business hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The box office will be open the day of the event beginning at 10 a.m. The first live fight begins at 6 p.m. ET. The event is presented by Los Angeles-based ProElite, Inc.’s live fight division, EliteXC.

Besides Kimbo-Shamrock, other finalized fights include: a title defense by EliteXC lightweight champion Jake Shields against Paul Daley, Carano collides with Kelly Kabold in a 140-pound bout and Rua, a former EliteXC middleweight beltholder, faces Benji Radach, at 185 pounds.

Cristiane “Cyborg’’ Santos meets Yoko Takahashi and Florida-based Edson Berto faces Hawaii’s Mike Aina at 170 in top undercard fights. The undercard also will feature Florida favorites Crafton Wallace and Seth Petruzelli, who will face foes to be announced. Wallace has won four straight and six of seven. Petruzelli, a former cast member of the Ultimate Fighter, has won eight of his last 10 fights.

A major MMA attraction, the undefeated Kimbo, of Perrine, Fla., near Miami, is trained by respected legendary fighter and trainer, the no-nonsense Bas Rutten. Kimbo is coming off an exciting third-round TKO over James "Colossus" Thompson on May 31.

Before turning pro, the hard-hitting Kimbo grew up in and around Perrine. He made a name for himself on the Internet where videos of the bald, bearded, menacing-looking former underground bare-knuckle street fighter have been downloaded literally millions of times on YouTube.

Kimbo’s first two MMA fights lasted 62 seconds. In a devastating, memorable performance, Kimbo blew up Tank Abbott in 43 seconds last Feb. 16 in Miami.

Shamrock, of Reno, Nev., is a true MMA legend and one of the biggest draws in any sport. Known as “The World’s Most Dangerous Man,’’ 22 of his 26 wins have come via submission.

One of the sport's most recognizable and popular figures, Shamrock has fought in some of the biggest and most important fights in MMA history. He has defeated the likes of Rutten, Maurice Smith, Dan “The Beast” Severn and Kimo Leopoldo in an illustrious career.

Shields, of San Francisco, is a life-long vegetarian who was raised in a remote area in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California. Undefeated for nearly five years and a winner of 10 straight, including six inside the distance, Shields is considered one of the best in the world at 170 pounds.

On July 26 in Stockton, Calif., Shields captured the EliteXC belt with a 1:03, first-round submission over highly regarded Nick Thompson. A Cesar Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, Shields' last five fights have ended in the first round.

Daley, of Nottingham, England, is a confident, dangerous Muay Thai specialist whose style has been described as an aggressive mix of striking, striking and more striking. Extremely popular in England, he has won his last six fights, five by KO. Thirteen of Daley's 18 wins have come by stoppage.

Nicknamed “Semtex” after an explosive that British armed forces use to demolish large structures, Daley stopped previously unbeaten Bojan Kosednar in the first round in his last start on July 12 in the UK. When he's not fighting, Daley has been involved in a project with Mothers Against Guns in London.

Carano, aka “Crush” on American Gladiators, resides in Las Vegas. She'll be making her first start since registering an entertaining, crowd-pleasing second-round TKO over Kaitlin Young on May 31.

The most recognizable female MMA fighter in the world, Carano is a skilled Muay Thai specialist with model looks and world-class ability. She has mostly dominated her opposition.

Kobald, of Minneapolis, began her career 16-0-1. A tough talker who has predicted an early- round knockout, Kobald holds a second round TKO victory over the respected Shayna Baszler.

Rua, of Curitiba, Brazil, is a classy Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai black belt whose aggressive style makes for scintillating scraps. A former EliteXC 185-pound champ and the brother of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, “Ninja’’ has won five of his last six, including a first-round TKO over Tony Bonello last June 14.

Radach, of Castle Rock, Wash., has been on a roll. The heavy-handed veteran has won five of his last six fights. Regarded as a top young prospect until an injury sidelined him for three years, Radach owns several notable triumphs in a career that began in March 2001.

Santos, a talented, aggressive-minded Brazilian, stormed onto the women's scene in spectacular fashion in her United States debut on July 26 in Stockton. In an overwhelming performance that lasted just under six minutes, she overpowered Baszler en route to winning by impressive second-round TKO.

A product of the world-famous Chute Boxe Academy in Curitiba, Brazil, Santos is trained by her husband and fellow fighter, Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos.

The more experienced Takahashi, of Japan, has won two of her last three.

Berto lives in Orlando and will be making his fifth start for EliteXC. Aina, who lost a controversial decision to world-class Nick Diaz in September 2007, is coming off a win over Strikeforce lightweight champion Kaleo Kwan last June 14.

The remainder of the fights will be announced soon. For more information on Kimbo, please go to (http://www.elitexc.com/fighters.

ELITEXC’S JEREMY LAPPEN COMMENTS ON CSAC RULING TO SUSPEND ANTONIO SILVA
8-23-2008

Denver, CO

LOS ANGELES – The California State Athletic Commission announced Thursday morning it had suspended Antonio Silva for 12 months and fined him $2,500 for testing positive for the banned anabolic substance Boldenone after a fight on July 26 in Stockton.

Shortly thereafter, Silva’s co-manager Alex Davis issued a statement claiming not only that his fighter was clean but that he had no idea how Silva could have tested positive.

Here is what Jeremy Lappen, Head of EliteXC Fight Operations, had to say in response to Thursday’s events:

“We respect the California commission and the job they do. We always enjoy working with them and work very well together. The illegal use of steroids is a problem in all major sports, including mixed martial arts. We certainly do not condone the use of steroids.

“But we also support, trust and have confidence in our fighter, Antonio Silva, who has denied ever taken any illegal substance, including steroids, and is prepared to challenge the results of the California Commission.

“So until all the facts are known and a final decision is rendered, EliteXC will reserve making any further comments at this time.’’

SAN JOSE, Calif. —Mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg (16-6) will face off with Hawaiian star Falaniko “Niko” Vitale (26-8) and knockout artist Duane “Bang” Ludwig (16-8) will attempt to avenge a previous defeat at the hands of “The Ultimate Fighter” season three veteran, Sam “The Squeeze” Morgan (19-10), when Strikeforce ventures to Denver, Colorado’s Broomfield Events Center on Friday, October 3rd.

Also back in action at Strikeforce “Payback” will be “The New York Badass” Phil Baroni (12-10) and “The Ultimate Fighter” season four veteran, “The Secret Weapon” Pete Spratt (18-14).

Tickets for Strikeforce “Payback,” priced from $30, go on sale Monday, August 18th at Ticketmaster (303-830-TIXS) and Ticketmaster.com.

Of late, the 36-year-old Trigg, a two-time UFC world welterweight (170 lb. limit) championship challenger and former star with the now-defunct Pride Fighting Championship organization, has been making noise in the world’s fastest growing sport. His valiant, come-from-behind stoppage of Jayson “Mayhem” Miller in the second round of a highly-anticipated meeting on December 1, 2006, earned Trigg a shot at Pride champion, Kazuo Misaki, whom Trigg overpowered and outwrestled to earn a unanimous decision win on February 24, 2007.

In his latest effort, which came on December 15, 2007, Trigg quickly submitted Edwin Dewees at the 1:40 mark of round 1 at Dallas, Texas’ American Airlines Center.

Trigg emerged on the MMA scene in 1997, shortly after graduating from University of Oklahoma, and was victorious in his first eight starts, including his Pride debut on November 21, 1999, in which he stopped Brazil’s Fabiano Iha in the first round of action with a series of strikes.

Spirited and outspoken, Trigg has been around the block in the world of Hollywood, having made appearances in an episode of hit sit-com series, “The King Of Queens;” the recent Sony Pictures Classics silver screen release, “Red Belt;” and as a contestant on VH1 reality program, “Kept.” He also serves as an analyst and plays an on-screen role in TNA Wrestling.

Vitale, the pride of Honolulu, Hawaii, is looking to notch his third consecutive victory following his conquest of a four-man elimination event in his hometown on January 26th.

To date, Vitale’s greatest stand remains his triumph over 2000 Olympics Greco-Roman Wrestling Silver Medalist, Matt “The Law” Lindland, still widely considered the top middleweight in the sport of mixed martial arts. Vitale stopped Lindland in the first round of action with a slam at UFC 43 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

His pair of judges’ decision wins over former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne and Japan’s Yushin Okami are amongst the other notable impressions Vitale has made in world-class MMA.

During Strikeforce’s inaugural fight card at the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, California on September 29, 2007, Vitale performed like a star as he hammered Ron Fields into submission in the opening round of their bout.

One of America’s true fan favorites, Ludwig, a native of Denver, will revisit history and attempt to produce a radically different result from his first dance with Morgan three years ago that ended abruptly 52 seconds into the opening round after Ludwig hit the canvas from a barrage of punches.

Ironically, Ludwig, in his next start, shattered the all-time record for quickest UFC knockout when he flattened Jonathan Goulet with a right hand at the 11 second mark of their live Spike TV battle on January 16, 2006.

Ludwig, who celebrated his 30th birthday last week, has shaped his mixed martial arts game around his foundation in Muay Thai kickboxing, which he took up at the age of 15. His achievements in the sport of professional kickboxing include victory of the ISKA world Muay Thai junior middleweight crown and the first-ever K-1 Max (159 lb. limit) qualifying tournament in North America.

Morgan, 26, is looking to rebound from two straight defeats, the first of which came at the hands of recently-crowned Strikeforce World Middleweight Champion, Cung Le. The fight with Le marked a jump in weight classes for Morgan, who had spent the rest of his career fighting in the 170 lb. class.

Morgan’s unique nickname, “The Squeeze,” stems from his thoughts on handling psychological pressure in a competitive situation. The meaning is similar that of the more common phrases “sink or swim” and “fight or flight.”

Eddie Goldman On Joey Reynolds Show Discussing Olympics

8-13-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-08-13T02_42_57-07_00

Eddie Goldman of No Holds Barred and SecondsOut Radio was a guest on the nationally-syndicated "Joey Reynolds Show" early Tuesday morning, August 12. Eddie is the boxing correspondent for this show.

It was certainly a contrast of content, styles, and taste, as the other guests were comedian Rick Younger and Joshua Neuman, editor and publisher of Heeb Magazine, who was discussing something called the Heeb Olympics. But Eddie stuck to his game plan, focusing on the huge, positive, worldwide reaction thus far to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, some problems in the Olympics, and what is going on in Olympic and pro boxing.

The "Joey Reynolds Show" is a national radio broadcast in New York on WOR 710 AM and on 100 other stations via the WOR Network. The show airs live beginning at midnight EDT and runs to 5 AM EDT. For more information on the "Joey Reynolds Show," go to

STRIKEFORCE - Misaki Collides With Riggs At Playboy Mansion
8-11-2008, Denver, CO

Event date: September 20, 2008
Venue: Playboy Mansion, Beverly Hills, California

SAN JOSE, Calif. —Former Pride Fighting Championship Grand Prix winner, Kazuo “Grabaka Hitman” Misaki (22-8-1) will take on fellow middleweight wonder Joe “Diesel” Riggs (28-10) at Strikeforce mixed martial arts’(MMA) highly-anticipated return to the world-famous Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif. on
Saturday, September 20th.

"I am looking forward to making my debut for Strikeforce at The Playboy Mansion, an incredible venue that is well-known throughout the world,” said Misaki, the winner of Pride’s 2006 welterweight Grand Prix elimination playoff. In his last effort, a meeting with rising star Logan Clark in Saitama, Japan on June 8th, the 32-year-old Team Grabaka star secured his second straight win by earning a nod from all three judges scoring the matchup.

Kazuo “Grabaka Hitman” Misaki - “Joe Riggs is a tremendous competitor. His style is aggressive like mine so I have no doubt that our fight will be an exciting and memorable one."

To arrive at the winner’s circle of the highly coveted tournament produced by the now-defunct Pride organization, Misaki defeated both “The NY Badass” Phil Baroni and then-reigning Pride welterweight champion, Dan Henderson.

Misaki was eliminated in the tournament’s semifinal round of action by Paulo Filho, but a knee injury Filho sustained during the contest precluded the Brazilian from advancing to the championship round. Misaki replaced Filho and capitalized on the opportunity, taking a split judges’ decision from Denis Kang.

The 25 year-old Riggs of Phoenix, Ariz. is coming off a second round submission of Matt Dempsey on July 26th. The victory marked a successful comeback for Riggs after a back injury he sustained from being thrown by Cory Devela at Strikeforce’s debut in Tacoma, Wash. on February 23rd, left Riggs ailing on the canvas and forced him to verbally submit only a little over a minute after the matchup began.

Joe “Diesel” Riggs - “The back’s great. It’s 100 percent,” Riggs said. “I’m really excited to be healthy again and looking forward to getting back on top.”

To help him prepare for what is arguably his toughest challenge in nearly two years, Riggs is bringing in to his camp a host of heavy hitters, including MMA legend Ken Shamrock, as well as former UFC Middleweight Champion, Rich Franklin; Jeremy Horn; and Edwin Dewees.

Riggs insists that this will be his final fight at 185 lbs. “I’m dropping to 170 lbs,” he proclaimed, “and gonna jump into the top 10 in that division.”

In a featured matchup with Eugene “The Wolf” Jackson at Strikeforce’s inaugural Playboy Mansion-hosted event on September 29, 2007, Riggs overpowered the ageless brawler and finished Jackson at the 3:56 mark of the opening round with a ground and pound offensive.

During his seven-year professional career, Riggs has defeated a number of rival standouts, including Nick Diaz; Joe Doerksen; Chris Lytle; and “The Ultimate Fighter 3” winner, Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove.

The showdown between Misaki and Riggs is the first confirmed “Strikeforce At The Mansion II” matchup. The lineup will be comprised of 10 bouts.

In addition to a full night of MMA action, all “Strikeforce At The Mansion II” guests will be entitled to a top-shelf, open bar; buffet-style, gourmet dinner; and wine-tasting party featuring the spirits of various California gold medal wineries.

Strikeforce wrote a new chapter in sports history when it produced the first-ever MMA event at the Playboy Mansion last September. Amongst the host of celebrities who attended the affair were Hefner and “The Girls Next Door;” comedians Gary Shandling and Joe Rogan; actress and model Jaime Pressly; actors Michael Duncan Clarke, Christina Fulton, Ethan Suplee, Ernie Hudson, and Page Kennedy; MMA legends Royce Gracie and Bas Rutten; and superstars Cung Le, Frank Shamrock, Josh Barnett, and Andrei Arlovski.

All inquiries regarding tickets for “Strikeforce At The Mansion II” should be directed to Dan Guiterrez at Strikeforce’s corporate headquarters (Ph # 408-998-8232.)

No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on the Contradictions of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

8-7-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-08-04T18_07_05-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents a dialectical look at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, which begin Friday, August 8 (http://en.beijing2008.cn/).

We examine the various aspects of the Olympics, including the contradiction between, on the one hand, the rampant commercialism and corruption in the Olympics, and, on the other hand, the sporting aspect of this event. We conclude, at least for the combat sports, that the Olympics are worth watching because the sporting aspect remains the principal aspect in them.

No Holds Barred: Eddie Goldman on John McCain, MMA, and Boxing

7-31-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-30T10_34_02-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, we focus on discussing the article "Punch Drunk Love. How boxing explains John McCain" by Michael Crowley in The New Republic (http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=8adb26e1-5e0b-48f7-9587-55d3cf9a365f), which quotes me extensively about McCain's obsessive campaign against mixed martial arts in the 1990's. We also discuss the significance of those views of McCain for today.

In addition, we also discuss the EliteXC show on CBS this past Saturday, the monumental drop in ratings from their May 31 show, and other issues including the future of the IFL, MMA coming to New York, and the flawed pay-per-view model for combat sports.

BATTLE UNDER THE STARS - This weekend

7-30-2008

Denver, CO

Jim 'Smitty' Smith and Poor Boys Pro Boxing have teamed up with local MMA power promoter, Sven Bean to bring you no less than 11 bouts on a card entitled "Battle Under The Stars".

BOXING BOUTS:
The main event will pit Colorado's Victor Villareal against tough veteran Patrick 'Head Hunter' Thompson from Nebraska. The bout will be an 8 rounder for the Colorado/Nebraska States title at super middleweight. The title will be recognized by both the Colorado and Nebraska state boxing commissions as well as the Association of Boxing Committee (ABC).

The chief support bout will be a rematch between welterweights Brad Jackson and Julio Lanzas, who fought to a draw in March. Jairo Delgado will take on 25 fight veteran Javier Segura in only his second start as a pro. Delgado is certainly one to watch for. Rounding out the boxing portion of the card is John Kiser against Jose Beltran and the much anticipated debut of Tommy Atencio. Atencio was an outstanding amateur in the Colorado boxing scene with many state, regional and national titles to his credit.

MMA FEATURE BOUTS:
There will be three solid MMA matches at the event featuring fighters from Colorado, Arizona, and South Dakota.
In a light heavyweight bout New York transplant Ken Kreuscher takes on Battlequest veteran Coy Sasse. Kreuscher is 1-1 in MMA and 1-0 in Muay Thai. All of wins have come by way of Knockout. He has trained with the likes of Renzo Gracie, Nate Marquardt and Kru Phil Nurse. Coy Sasse hails from Rapid City, South Dakota. He is well rounded fighter out of Dynamic Martial Arts and is trained by veteran fighter/coach Josh Usera. Sasse made his debut at the Battlequest 8 event where he dispatched Rory O'Farrel in the first round. Sasse also has a 2-0 amateur boxing record.

Denver's Ben Deanda replaces Ralston Baker, who had to drop from the card for personal reasons. Deanda is a Battlequest veteran and mixes solid striking with slick jiujitsu skills. He hails from Nate Marquardt's High Altitude Martial Arts. Deanda will be facing an amazing athlete in Justin Gaethje. Gaethje compiled a record of 191-9 wrestling at Stafford High School in Arizona, where he was a four-time regional champion, and twice named team captain. In the first MMA bout of the evening two lightweights will make their debut as submission stylist Justin Griffis locks up with wrestler Rocco Depaolo. Griffis is a Brazilian Jiujitsu blue belt under Mauricio Zingano. Depaolo is a Colorado state runner up and is part of the UNC wrestling squad.

MUAY THAI BOUTS:
The fight card will also feature 3 women's Muay Thai matches. In the feature bout Lauren Sugihara faces Jessica Hollenback. Sugihara is better known as DJ Ms. Vicious, one of the most sought after DJ's in the industry. She is known for her looks, something that has garnered attention from Playboy, but she can also fight. She is currently 2-0 in Muay Thai and will be looking to enter in to the MMA scene in the future. She is trained by the legend Clarence Thatch of 3-D Martial Arts. Jessica Hollenback is 1-0 and comes out of the Colorado Muay Thai camp. She has the most technically sound Muay Thai coach in the region, Oscar Martinez, in her corner.
La Boxing's Christina Kaneesal (1-1) will face off against Colorado Muay Thai's Rachel Sahlberg (2-0). Both girls are known for there toe-to-toe non stop style and should be a crowd pleaser. And to kick off the night, Sarah Padilla (0-1) of Denver will face debut fighter Danyella Hogle at 132-137 lbs.

No Holds Barred: Melvina Lathan, Gov. David Paterson, Larry Hazzard, Randy Gordon

7-27-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-26T05_51_32-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman focuses on the appointment of longtime boxing judge Melvina Lathan as head of the New York State Athletic Commission.

We start with a commentary on the significance of this appointment, and what it means for the sports of boxing and mixed martial arts in New York.

At a ceremony held Friday, July 25, at the Police Athletic League in Harlem, New York, officially announcing her appointment, we got comments from Melvina Lathan about her new job, boxing, and MMA. We have the statements both she and New York Governor David Paterson made at this ceremony. We also asked Governor David Paterson about his attitude to MMA coming to New York. No Holds Barred: Affliction Banned Review with Matthew Kaplowitz

7-23-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-22T23_42_21-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our correspondent Matthew Kaplowitz (http://matthewkaplowitz.com/) about the debut Affliction "Banned" mixed martial arts card, which was held Saturday, July 19, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. Matthew was in the arena covering it live.

In a lengthy discussion, we present a very nuanced analysis of the positives and negatives of the Affliction show, including the lessons of the 36-second blowout by Fedor Emelianenko, the top heavyweight and pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world, over former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.

Eddie also opens the show with another commentary on the problems facing those promoters reliant on the pay-per-view TV model, the growing availability of fights from around the world online and for free, and the inconclusive ending of the Dream lightweight MMA tournament in Japan.

Also, No Holds Barred is available through iTunes at

No Holds Barred: Pay-Per-View Follies, Thomas Hauser on HBO and Boxing

7-16-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-15T13_49_45-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman begins by explaining, once again, how the pay-per-view business model of many boxing and mixed martial arts companies is flawed due to numerous factors, including the growth of streaming on peer-to-peer networks, the declining economy, and more. In particular, the pay-per-view model of the Affliction MMA promotion is critiqued.

In our main interview, which was originally played on SecondsOut Radio (http://secondsout.com/radio), we spoke with the award-winning boxing writer and author, Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com (http://www.secondsout.com/).

Recently he wrote a lengthy and sharp critique called "HBO: 2008", which called into question the direction being taken by HBO, the most important television network in boxing (http://www.secondsout.com/Columns/index.cfm?ccs=208&cs=24779).

That article has been widely discussed, and we continued that discussion, both about HBO and the state and future of boxing, on our show this week.

SecondsOut Radio: Dr. Margaret Goodman on Ringside Doctor Failures

7-14-2008

Denver, CO

On this week's edition of SecondsOut Radio, host Eddie Goldman begins by commenting on yet another woeful heavyweight title fight, this past Saturday's 11th-round knockout by IBF-WBO champ Wladimir Klitschko over Tony Thompson in Hamburg, Germany, and the state of the heavyweight division.

The subject of the actions and inactions of ringside physicians once again came to the fore during the June 28 Humberto Soto-Francisco Lorenzo 130-pound title fight, which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. After Lorenzo had been knocked down in the fourth round and then took a knee after a barrage of punches by Soto, he was struck in the back of the head, while still down, by Soto. The fight was over, but the ringside officials took several minutes to discuss the impact of that
foul by Soto, and to decide whether to award a TKO victory to Soto or to disqualify him for the foul. While all this was going on, Lorenzo was lying on the canvas, bleeding and hurt, by legal and/or illegal blows.

Dr. Margaret Goodman, a neurologist and former chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, is a long-time fighter for the health and safety of boxers. Now, she is speaking out in criticism of the failures of the ringside physicians in the Soto- Lorenzo fight, as well as in the July 5 Kendall Holt-Ricardo Torres fight, also held in Las Vegas. In the latter fight, Holt was knocked down twice in the early seconds of the first round, but rallied to
knock Torres out cold, all in just 61 seconds.

Dr. Goodman has also written an article entitled "A Barely Noticed Death" for an upcoming edition of "The Ring". This piece focuses on the death on March 19 of this year of journeyman boxer Rafael Ortiz, who had last fought March 8 in the state of Washington, and the disgracefully inadequate prefight and postfight medical examinations he received.

This week we spoke at length with Dr. Margaret Goodman about these medical failures, and what we can do to fight for fighter safety.

It is free to listen to SecondsOut Radio, but you must register to gain access to it. Just click here,

No Holds Barred: Todd Hester on the Soul of Mixed Martial Arts

7-12-2008

Denver, CO

http://nhbnews.podOmatic.com/entry/2008-07-11T13_13_26-07_00

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with our colleague Todd Hester, who is the publisher and editor-in-chief of Gladiator Magazine (http://gladmag.com/).

Todd is someone who has been immersed in the combat sports for many years. He started training with the Gracies in the late 1980's, covered the first UFC in 1993, and has been ringside or cageside for countless MMA events all around the world.

Now, in a provocative new editorial called "Redemption and Transformation", in the current edition of Gladiator Magazine, he argues that MMA has lost its soul.

Commenting on what grappling, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts are really about, he wrote, "it isn't about the fighting." He also argued, "fighting for the sake of pure violence is basically immoral."

In a lengthy interview, we discuss the transformation of mixed martial arts from, as he called it, the "cerebral" sport it once was, to its current state which celebrates "mindless, juvenile violence." We also discuss what can be done to change the sport of mixed martial arts into something which plays a more positive role.

Promoter Belinda Dunne brought together two teams (USA vs Australasia) for the continental 'Princesses of Pain' Championship and the cameras were there to capture all of the drama, including Lucas' mixed martial arts debut in Auckland on May 31st.

These bouts feature female fighters from all walks of life, skilled in jiu-jitsu, boxing, judo, kickboxing, and wrestling. The contests are full-on fights by highly trained athletes drawing crowds from all over the world. The unique aspect and controversial element of the fights have single-handedly transformed these ladies into America’s newest sports heroes, and have catapulted these competitions into the limelight as an athletic, social and cultural phenomenon sweeping the nation and world by storm.

Led by Team Captain
Lana Stefanic, Team USA consists of Amanda Lucas, Tamara Parks, Shawn Tamaribuchi, Van Do, Katie Meehan and Cindy Hales.

Team Australasia is led by Captain Tony Green and consisted of Nicole Kavanagh, Margaux La Trobe, Leighann Banham, Mandy Stewart, Michelle Preston and Fiona Muxlow.

Executive Producer Andrea Stockert is aware of the controversial nature of the footage and welcomes a discussion. “My ultimate vision was to explore why these women do this, and why we all have such visceral reactions when we see them put on the gloves and hit each other. As an outsider, it looks incredibly brutal and uncontrolled- but once you understand the game (and the women) you begin to see it all so differently - it becomes an art form,” comments Stockert.

"The footage has already garnered a lot of interest from cable networks and agencies" says Stockert, "and we are now taking the steps to find the right home for the series. We're looking forward to finding the right match."
